Even if it's just rehashes from the annual (I don't mind if it's just a close-crop of either by now), give it up already! ... though it would spoil the banner symmetry somewhat since, excepting Legolas, the characters are all standing right of field (from their POV) and looking left. Or would Thranduil be meant to be in a pose similar to Legolas

Thorin is letting his beard "grow out", now that he has returned to claim his kingship?

IMO Thorin behaved EXACTLY as an emotionally scarred, outwardly often hard warrior-king with a huge heart WOULD behave, when struggling to have to make a huge adjustment mentally over the fact that this home-loving hobbit that he dismissed had just, inexplicably, nearly died to save him. That's why I love that scene. It's like there is hope that this hardened man (gender, not race) will turn around. It's one of the rare nice moments we have of Thorin before he loses it, and a sign of things to come regarding Thorin's death scene.

Yeah, that scene might be interpreted in many ways...

but the fact that it uses a cliche' of cheesiness is undeniable. I'm not saying that nobody should like that scene, of course. I'm just saying it uses a technique that I thought it was buried in lower class movies. I began rolling my eyes the first time I saw it as soon as Thorin started to verbally attack Bilbo... and I roll my eyes every time I see it... it's just laughable, to me. The fact that it should be the ice on the cake, the satisfying conclusin, the emotional apex of the movie, it just increases it's mediocrity, IMHO.

Many scenes from many films could be decribed as cliche

when you think about it. The death of the older mentor, and the pupil has to rise to the occasion. The death of a lover/pet/friend. Coming of age stories. The Hobbit itself is a "journey myth" of sorts "and when you return, you will not be the same - as well as Thorin to a degree being the king stripped of his kingdom and attempt to reclaim it. What you find cliched I think in this case is beautifully scripted and completely appropriate. When I think about other possible scenarios I flinch: 1) Shipping *bleagh* - Bilbo on his knees sobbing "please come back to us, please" and Thorin slowly opens his eyes "I would never leave you, my little hobbit....death itself will not separate us - don't you know I cared for you from the minute I saw you, that's why I was so mean to you" and then way later we see a forlorn Bilbo sigh and look up, and there's Thorin in the clouds with angel wings surrounded by all the ancient warriors of old, smiling at Bilbo. Maybe with some sparkles, too. Certainly with a GLOW of sorts. And then the overvoice "I will be with you, always." 2) Thorin has no reaction at all, but just irritably gets up and glares at everyone. When Balin attempts to chide Thorin over this, Thorin snaps that "it's about time this loser acted like a dwarf, so what's the big deal?" E.g. real men dwarves don't HUG, unless it's their horse or their dog. 3) Thorin struggles to rise, and as the dwarves step back to give their irritated king some room, Bombur clumsily knocks Bilbo off the carrock. Happily tho, Bilbo lands on an Ent that just happens to be passing by, providing another LOTR tie-in (unfortunately tho this scenario triggers a riot among the Tolkien canonistas who feel that they have been pushed beyond patience ) 4) MANLY scenario #2 (popular among many "buddy" pictures a.k.a. the Expendables): Thorin irritably gets up and yells at Gandalf to the delight of the audience, pointing out that one of those "power-blast thingies" would have been kind of useful, yah know, and they are probably all in trouble for setting a fire in a wildlife preserve. Thorin then sidles over to a wary Bilbo, and they, in classic "buddy picture" style, both stand together staring into the distance. "That was totally awesome, dude", says Thorin finally, shuffling his heavy boots. "I owe you one." He slaps Bilbo on the shoulder so hard that Bilbo cringes in pain. "And next round at the Prancing Pony is on me, OK?" __________________________________ No, tho it's obvious the final Hobbit scenes were not your cup of tea, for me, I feel it was a superb treatment of the unlikely bonding that forms between dwarf king and hobbit *reaches for tissues*

And BTW for me, as well, a shout out to Martin Freeman who is marvelous as he defends the fallen Thorin, and of course the superb job done on the eagles. And another shout out to Manu Bennett who I think is doing a terrific job as Azog (he's very funny in cons and interviews when he talks about the experience of bringing Azog to life). As always, tho, after Thorin and Bilbo have trust, I wish we had had just a few seconds of them just sitting talking, maybe around the nightly meal, sharing a smoke. Perhaps in the DOS EE we might see a bit more of the changed relationship (tho I think Thorin telling the dwarves to do as Bilbo says in DOS spoke volumes.)

So, if they put this image on a highway billboard and/or the side of key buildings in major cities, how many fender-benders would it cause from DISTRACTED drivers? . Tho I do like the Bard image a lot, too. Now I am just curious as to who might be next!!!
How about a relative of Thorin's?
FAN ART!!!!! See: https://atolkienistperspective.wordpress.com/...iece/comment-page-1/ Anyway, I think a SECOND Thorin poster would be great, in the crown with the raven sword...or Fili and Kili....

Like what you described for the second Thorin poster. This is as much his story as Bilbo's. I'll be happy when I see dwarves on the public transit walls.

Thorin_of_Erebor does such lovely work, and what a subject as well
PS. Looks like RA kept the beard for "Sleepwalkers" - maybe re set pick posted - *THUD*
But I am so gonna miss that tumbling black currant mane that would swirl past Thorin's face when he would turn in certain shots.
