But I really was VERY sure that 1) Thorin would be last re some sort of marketing thing and 2) it would be re-hash. Even started playing around in PS yesterday to see if I could mimic the effect for fun (tho I wasn't successful.....)

I remember from the Appendices, Phillipa Boyens talking about seeing "innate strength" in Richard. I think that's here, in a single look.
RA photographs beautifully (re the recent Crucible images and the Hobbit PR) and had been vaguely hoping that this "dark and gritty" treatment would work well with him - and so it has!!!
Will be interested to see if they do Fili and Kili (about time) and/or more of the dwarves?

And I wanna say thanks to you and all the others who were "on the prowl" - somehow - and got this news up so fast. 'Coz srsly, I wasn't expecting anything at all this weekend - thought Tauriel, Azog, maybe would be released - maybe Monday Thranduil.
Just never know how the world will turn - woke up late with some kind of cold, dragging, it's grey and rainy, my eyes felt puffy and probably are, doin' caffeine to try to get moving....
But I feel much better now, bruises and all

That's it exactly. Makes you wonder what he is looking at and what he is thinking.
As for the hair, from what little we can see of it, the gritty look seems to agree with it quite well. And the braids look perfect - looks like he got some new thingies to go on the ends (leather?). And the beard looks all scruffy and mmmmm.
I like the snow too - I didn't really register it with the Gandalf and Bard posters.
