I admire the way PJ can envision and frame a shot - of does he just have multiple cameras going at different distances, and the real work is done in the editing room? Personally think they could just 'shop variones' stunning painting - if that - and there you go:
*wistful* I wish this artist would paint Thorin... Anyway I hope it's Thranduil or possibly Fili/Kili. Dunno - do folks feel as tho Smaug and Azog ought to get their own posters?

She's looking good. Much better than Legolas with his grimey and 'shopped orange-peel complexion Interesting that the two Mirkwood Elves are left of field sort of looking right in dark, snowy conditions while Galadriel is looking the other way round, quite pristine and in a bright/whitish glowfield. I am surprised that on the HobbitMovie fb there seems to be a lot of hate for Tauriel just cos. I admit I have my problems with her, but those are writer/director issues, not the character per se. The fb seems loaded with anti-Tauriel feels for no other reason than she's not a book character. Feels like the LotR Xenarwen days, and she was legitimately in the book. *shrug* anyway, feeling quietly excited-hopeful now

Desaturated fan edit (clickies)

Looking at these and being able to compare, I find myself liking the fan edit better actually. imo, further proof the photoshopping's really too OTT And in relation, this (sorta)LoL. Might seem harsh to some. Though seriously, and in all fairness to Tauriel, overt airbrushing seems to permeate all sorts of movie images these days. I am just hoping Thranduil won't be having this conversation with himself tomorrow

Good point, but imo the contrast is inherent in the original

I took it and just brought down the saturation all the way, without doing anything else, and this is the result. Looks good to me.
ETA: this is the above with some tinking on the contrast... best result I could get without losing the nose definition to bulbous flat face syndrome.
Tried bringing down the contrast on the fan edit and just ewwww the brightest part of the nose is just disfiguring everything else whether contrast is up or down. It looked totally fudged up. Anyway, so yeah, I think it's inherent in the original. But I'm hardly an expert and am doing it on the MS delivered Picture Manager so maybe I'm missing something here *shrug*

... is better exposure on social media. The hashtag #Hobbit has seen a big increase since the posters started to come out. I guess it is a good way to lead-in to the trailer. What I like about the Tauriel poster reactions: There is quite a big amount of people who seem to have been won over by the character. And even many of those who hate the love-triangle aspect find her character in general a nice addition.
"I am afraid it is only too likely to be true what you say about the critics and the public. I am dreading the publication for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. I have exposed my heart to be shot at." J.R.R. Tolkien We all have our hearts and minds one way or another invested in these books and movies. So we all mind and should show the necessary respect.

Re the book etc. he seems to get a fair amount of imagery. Obviously no favorite of mine but his 'tude when Bolg shows up in DOS and that orc is snarling in his face makes me laugh - priceless expression. Manu Bennett brings it! Think one of these "dark and gritty" posters with Smaug would be EPIC but IMO it's hard to beat the effect of the one w. Bard that is already out

Tho how these images are done I can't guess - probably taken from actual stills in the films, maybe? Legolas definitely got the short end of the PR stick, so far. Tho the more I've seen of the Tauriel one, the less I like it - too plastic, too posed, and too much like a cosmetic advertisement. And even a lot of ads have more thematically than this. And yet IMO it's better than the banner - to me that image doesn't even look like EL. But LOL at least Bilbo looks exactly like Bilbo in the banner, and everyone else looks like themselves.
