Thranduil is so proud and Bilbo is so humble. Thranduil is the definition of power and Bilbo is the definition of meekness. Thranduil is wild and Bilbo is mild. Wow... complete this poemie thing please
I think it would be great if BotFA would show us exactly what both of those pictures show us...that Thranduil does have a softer side and that Bilbo is the one who brings that out. Because really, Bilbo is the only one in the movie humble enough to do that IMO. Oh yes! Elf-friend indeed! Still hoping for some stealth-hobbit in Thranduil's Halls in the DOS EE to help set up some of that Elf-friend vibe we oughta get in BotFA, and to see Bilbo at Thranduil's side in the Battle. It's probably too much to ask, but I'd like to see Thranduil in his state visit regalia again too.

It's LP under Thranduil's badass amour, no body faking needed

Well Thralls, did that get your attention? Thanks to Avandel's remark about visuals (and the term body faking) and Thranduil in his armour (in this post on this thread she started in the Off-Topic forum)...
Or Thranduil: And if you look at a larger version of this, or various up close images of the elves - that's Lee Pace under that cloth. No body faking ... I got to posting *ahem*supporting evidence that no body faking is needed. For your analysis and comment please
LOL body faking... got to remember that term. Truly, LP has the frame and the mass... au naturel Strapping shoulders...check
Great arms... check
Broad back... check
Height... check

I love the contrast between Thranduil's and Bilbo's personalities. Thranduil is so proud and Bilbo is so humble. Thranduil is the definition of power and Bilbo is the definition of meekness. Thranduil is wild and Bilbo is mild. They're so different, but they still complement each other somehow. I think it would be great if BotFA would show us exactly what both of those pictures show us...that Thranduil does have a softer side and that Bilbo is the one who brings that out. Because really, Bilbo is the only one in the movie humble enough to do that IMO. The Yin and Yang. I like it. I have been watching my AUJ EE over the past couple of days, and I really noted that nature of Bilbo at the end there, when he causes Thorin to eat his words and hug him. Bilbo charms and disarms (there's something to add to the poem!) - flying in under the radar to tackle even a dwarf lord's brashness unexpectedly. To be longing for home, but to forego that to help his friends find their home.. this to me, along with the Gollum moment when "pity stays his hand", is the ultimate Bilbo moment, which I hope will be further reflected in BotFA.

Very nice fan art... and Nano speculation
[In reply to]

I very much like this artist's style! Wouldn't mind enlarging this and putting it on my wall. I've got a few blank spaces, and have been considering how nice it would be to have some fan art there. Btw, re your earlier request that I should share my fanfic frm Camp Nano..... oooo errr..... I have found it very hard to share my past Nano attempts. Out of my two completed (but unedited) novels, one is so embarrassing it will never see the light of day, but I do rather enjoy reading it myself, It's like it was written for my inner world. The other... rather nervously about to be sent out to some beta readers. But since I am planning to do a number of things for my Camp word count, I may attempt some fanfic drabbles. And those would be much easier to refine and make public. Let's see what happens!

Those are most excellent images you posted there Lurker! I've been diverted from my spreadsheets and powerpoint decks in a most entertaining and possibly nose bleeding fashion! *faints* I recall reading an article somewhere about LP having the perfect shoulders and body for costumes. I would certainly agree. His body frame is tall and lanky in a lovely way. He's muscled but not bulgy. LP pulls off the Thranduil look in spades and looks fabulous in suits (HACF) as well.

To be longing for home, but to forego that to help his friends find their home.. this to me, along with the Gollum moment when "pity stays his hand", is the ultimate Bilbo moment, which I hope will be further reflected in BotFA. I think there was an interview where he picked, as something he liked about the book, Bilbo's arc, being someone small and "insignficant" among kings and heroes, whose actions and kindness changed the world? It's amazing. The story is titled The Hobbit, but there's such great events in it where Bilbo is not the obvious pivotal character (and sometimes even just a story-[re]teller), and yet, his encounter with Gollum is the key event. He takes himself seriously and yet he is able to raise to the occasion, do great/generous things (like the foregoing home moment), but still be totally humble, and even provincial but receptive to strange new things at times. Martin Freeman embodies the dignity of the simple, uncomplicated common-man so well, and yet at the same time he infuses the character with character moments and comedy with the perfect touch.
(i'm quite taken with this anime-style rendition of Bilbo but strangely, can't find the source)
(Pretty! water colour paintings of more TH characters at source, including Thranduil, click on it) And for relevance

This one should work: *wipes drool off keyboard* Yeah, there isn't any body faking there! I love how the TH costume designer is so good at taking advantage of the actor's natural *cough* assets in order to make sure that they look the best in whatever it is they need to wear. (of course we all know that LP would look good wearing nothing but a potato sack, but the costume works too. )

*ahem* Thranduil is careful and guarded and Bilbo charms and disarms (thanks Kerewyn!). Thranduil is complex and Bilbo is simple. Thranduil is a twist of smoke and Bilbo is a ray of warm sunshine. Thranduil hides from the world outside while Bilbo is learning to face it head-on. Ok, I've run out of comparisons now. Anyone else want to take shot at it?

Still hoping for some stealth-hobbit in Thranduil's Halls in the DOS EE to help set up some of that Elf-friend vibe we oughta get in BotFA, and to see Bilbo at Thranduil's side in the Battle. I think the concept of "Elf-friend" is interesting. In LOTR at least, it almost seemed like the elves were doing more that just giving an "empty" title when they called someone elf-friend. It seemed like it was something truly special that others could see or feel. Like with Frodo, for example. I noticed that after he was called elf-friend for the first time, IIRC people kept saying that he had an elvish air about him that was never commented upon before he got that title. Of course, it could be that the elvish air just came from being around the elves for any length of time, but Frodo seemed to be the only one that people specifically thought had an elvish air. Or I might be misremembering the whole thing because I've only read LOTR once.

Why, no need to ever apologise for a lack of EI warning, especially when such thudderous images are to follow! But as for my lack of analysis, I dared not get too literal at the time, lest the thoughts find their way into my work. Which, ironically, was about 'body' - advertising copy about car body panel-beating repairs. Now I ditto what Elf-lady and Eruvandi have to say about LP's physique. (it's early, my thoughts are not yet collected, though my mind is full of images.) Oh wait..... VERY nice fan art rendering of said physique on that Elvogue cover! *needs to borrow that drool icon*. Is it weird to go EI over fan art?

Yes it is an interesting concept. And I wonder how the concept would be perceived amongst the world of men, whether it would be something people - through the fickleness of human nature - might be slightly suspicious of. Or, if it were perceived to have some element of social standing, would a person of self-importance, eg the Master of Laketown, like to apply the term to himself - due to successful trade with the Woodland Realm which he may feel he controls. (just wild speculation there.) Hmm... now I have a mental image of the Master meeting Thranduil, all puffed up with importance but then simply deflating under that regal gaze. The dwarves were also 'accused' of being elf-friends. I was reading TH last night, where the Great Goblin yells "Murderers and elf-friends! ... Slash them! Beat them!..." etc. He's recognised the swords of Gondolin of course, but I wonder if the dwarves felt insulted, on top of the physical attack they were undergoing.

*ahem* so.... Thranduil is so proud and Bilbo is so humble. Thranduil is the definition of power and Bilbo is the definition of meekness. Thranduil is wild and Bilbo is mild. Thranduil is a legendary warrior while Bilbo's parties are legendary. Thranduil is splendid on his war-elk, but Bilbo is content with a pony.

Yup, it's come round again. (In truth, I'm trying to catch up to stuff out there before the trailer hits hope this works). Oh, 1 question: Do you know when I post an image, clicking on it (usually) leads to the source image or source page where the image came from? Another one: is anyone, besides Kerewyn, Eruvandi, vanima, even interested in these? Should I think about purveying them via PM to them instead? ... back to the programme. There's another meeting I'm looking forward to seeing! The Master, underneath all of his pomp and circumstance, is really just a simpering coward. He likes to act like he's "all that", but I'd love to see what happens when someone like Thranduil, who really is "all that" shows up in person. Honestly, I think the Master is extremely intimidated by the mere thought of Thranduil, if he isn't outright afraid of him. Like Bard said when the dwarves first meet him in DOS, "The Master would see you in irons before he risks the wrath of king Thranduil." Thranduil is everything that the Master wishes he could be and pretends that he is, but if and when they meet face to face in BotFA, I imagine it being a rather pathetic display on the Master's part, full of lots of flattery, groveling, and general butt-kissing. Then, I picture Thranduil either totally ignoring him, or saying something fabulously snarky, and only interacting with Bard from that point on.
Yes it is an interesting concept. And I wonder how the concept would be perceived amongst the world of men, whether it would be something people - through the fickleness of human nature - might be slightly suspicious of.
Not being very well-read in Tolkien yet, I don't know if he addressed it or not, but I always wonder if there were any groups of men who didn't like elves or were distrustful of them in general. In LOTR and TH, it seemed like the two people groups were fine with each other for the most part, but, like you said, "the fickleness of human nature," most likely caused some issues between them at some point. On the other hand, I know for sure that Tolkien wrote about some elves that didn't like men in general. I started reading The Children of Hurin last night and during the first chapter, after Hurin and his brother (Huor?) have been in Gondolin for about a year and finally convince king Turgon to release them, this elf is mentioned (I think his name was Maeglin?) who it said didn't like men or any of their kin and wasn't happy about the great favor Turgon had shown towards Hurin and Huor. Basically, he didn't believe that they wouldn't just go blab about everything they had seen in Gondolin the second they got back home, and they had to swear an oath of silence in order for him to be happy. Well..."happy" relatively speaking anyway. He still didn't seem to like them.
Lol. Yeah, I bet the dwarves were highly insulted at being called elf-friends! I can hear it now...Thorin says to the Great Goblin: "I can take a little torture and slave-labor, but calling us elf friends? That's low even for you!"

Oh, 1 question: Do you know when I post an image, clicking on it (usually) leads to the source image or source page where the image came from? Yes, I knew that and I click them on a regular basis.
Another one: is anyone, besides Kerewyn, Eruvandi, vanima, even interested in these? Should I think about purveying them via PM to them instead? Even if no one else is interested, I don’t see why you should have to purvey these via PM. This is the Thranduil Appreciation Thread after all and these things are about Thranduil and for the general appreciation of him. Even if they’re about LP’s other roles, IMO, it still counts because LP is Thranduil and knowing more about his acting in general helps us to appreciate his approach to Thranduil even more! Thoughts on some of the various gifs, pics, etc: The first gif: http://cleanxfamous.tumblr.com/...nterrogating-the-orc It’s interesting to watch where Thranduil is looking as he gives his dramatic monologue in this scene. He starts by looking at the orc, then off into the distance, then back at the orc, then slowly up at Legolas and watches him for a second, then glances to Tauriel before looking back at the orc and standing, arms crossed, behind it. It makes me wonder, first of all, how often do the elves of Mirkwood capture bad guys and do official interrogations? By “official interrogations,” I mean, prisoner with hands tied behind back, on his knees with knife to throat, feeling threatened, not just being questioned with no threat like what they did with the dwarves. The reason I ask, is that the whole thing with the orc feels like they (at least Thranduil and Legolas) have done this before, or at least really know what they’re doing. So, does Thranduil always give a speech before they interrogate someone? In this case, the things he was saying, plus the way we was looking around made it seem like he was doing it just as much to intimidate the orc as to make a point about the evils of the outside world with Legolas and Tauriel, IMO. The gifs on this page: http://lee-pace-everyday.tumblr.com/...ction-diaries-behind First of all, I love the funny face/flailing arms LP does in the gif of the reaction to the Happy Hobbit reaction! In the gif directly below that, I totally didn’t realize that was him hugging Jed Brophy. Is it just me or is it a little odd how, in several of the vlogs they cut so suddenly to a shot of LP that if you’re not paying attention, you barely realize it’s him? It’s like, dwarf, dwarf, dwarf, dwarf, elf!, dwarf, dwarf, dwarf. Going down two gifs from there and then to the gif on the left, I totally didn’t realize that was OB doing elven movement training with LP. I recognized Terry Notary in the background, but for some reason I totally overlooked OB this whole time! Guess I got distracted by the fabulous and assumed he was another trainer or something. Sorry OB! Down one gif and one to the right. To a certain extent, the elven movement training in that one almost looks like he’s doing thai chi. Bottom left gif. *giggles with glee* He looks so goooood when he wields a sword! *thud* Bottom right gif. Can we please get a Thrandy smile in BotFA, pleeeeeeeease? He has such a nice smile, and it’s not like it’s going to break his face to smile just once! He could smile at Bilbo because Bilbo makes everyone smile and feel an inexplicable urge to hug him. The pics here: http://babybarnes23.tumblr.com/...-realm-on-his-throne I’m looking at the fourth picture down. The one that’s bigger and longer than the others where Thranduil is sitting fabulously while looking right at the camera. Whenever my mom sees that one, she says Thranduil looks just like a little boy who’s pouting because his feelings got hurt! Lol! This: http://tolkienismyreligion.tumblr.com/...palace-alan-lee-this Pretty! Wow! Still lot's of links left to click! I'll have to work my way through them this weekend!

Quote Oh, 1 question: Do you know when I post an image, clicking on it (usually) leads to the source image or source page where the image came from? Yes, I knew that and I click them on a regular basis. Oh goodies! I was just wondering since I forgot to indicate that sometimes.

Looking at the long list of stuff, I was suddenly thinking, "what the hell am I doing, spamming the thread, annoying others or maybe causing unlooked-for sensory overload" So it shall be. Until I hear violent objections
It’s interesting to watch where Thranduil is looking as he gives his dramatic monologue in this scene. In this case, the things he was saying, plus the way we was looking around made it seem like he was doing it just as much to intimidate the orc as to make a point about the evils of the outside world with Legolas and Tauriel, IMO.
Strangely, I recall when I first got on the net looking for the vid and screencaps to it, I came across some weird comments/questions about why Thranduil was looking at Legolas, Tauriel, the orc etc etc. Maybe it was due to the lack of context when the commentators first saw it. But imo, the way this scene played out/was designed interesting. As you say, Eruvandi, it is a dramatic monologue. It serves the purpose of laying the groundwork of showing us Thranduil's thoughts and opinions on evil, and also the dangers the Realm faced continually. Bleak, portentous, and pessimistic, and "In time, all foul things come forth" gives that sense of inevitability (don't cue agent Elrond please ), and has accents of a unspoken promise of what happens to foul things that come forth, mess around in the Woodland Realm and land in the Elves' hands. The Elves probably didn't take prisoners as a matter of course. By that, I mean the nature of the foes they faced in their day-to-day didn't necessitate the need usually. Spiders? Kill on sight. Orcs? Kill on sight. Wargs? Kill on sight. Anything disagreeable and not obviously a member of the Free Peoples? Kill on sight. *sorry, couldn't resist a little nod to Toothless and Hiccup* Because, basically, their homeland security policy is simply (I may not be quoting it rightly) "keep our lands clear of those foul things", based on Thranduil's plan to just endure while the world went to hell and back essentially. Having said that, these are Elves after all, even rustic ones. So there must have occasion where they did take prisoners, just to gather intelligence in the name of homeland security if nothing else. So yes, Thranduil and Legolas would have done it before. Though I imagine it is not often that Thranduil took part himself - too majestic for the usual grunt to bear looking at, and a waste of his time just cos grunts who squeal at the first knife glint don't usually have intel worth his time or effort. But with this orc though, he was probably curious about anything they could find out about the orcs' pursuit, and maybe he wanted the practice. Or he may be doing trainer assessment on Legolas and Tauriel's interrogation skillz? The script did pick a great point to give us this soliloquy. Where else could Thranduil say it without it sounding like overwrought melodrama (not that the choices were many to begin with ), and it does segue well into the orc beheading, in lieu of a flashback to the Last Alliance and Thranduil's personal experience/outlook from the War plus serve as another reminder to Legolas and Tauriel about why they should . I wonder how much thought and planning did PJ and Thranduil, I mean LP, do in the blocking about how he should portray it. Where Thranduil looked as he spoke, and essentially prowled around his prey, felt very naturalistic and organic to me. (feels like we're doing a mini CHOW right here doesn't it?)
First of all, I love the funny face/flailing arms LP does in the gif of the reaction to the Happy Hobbit reaction! heheh... Thranduil having fun is a rare sight eh?
In the gif directly below that, I totally didn’t realize that was him hugging Jed Brophy. Is it just me or is it a little odd how, in several of the vlogs they cut so suddenly to a shot of LP that if you’re not paying attention, you barely realize it’s him? It’s like, dwarf, dwarf, dwarf, dwarf, elf!, dwarf, dwarf, dwarf. ikr?! When I first came across the tag, I did a double-take, went back to the vlog and yup... that's the same grey tee (I think) and hair LP had in the bottom right gif, plus look at the height and broad back... gotta be him. It's like let's play spot-the-elf-guy. Thanks to the eagle-eyed fans inhabiting tumblr.

Sorry OB! me too. Apologies to OB
Bottom left gif. *giggles with glee* He looks so goooood when he wields a sword! *thud* You know, with his gunslinging turn in The Fall, and now cool swordwielding cred, it would be nice to see him in a cool movie franchise. Was thinking the Dark Tower just in terms of concept, but I've not read the thing yet and can't quite justify any role. Nothing else is coming to mind right now. Any thoughts?
Bottom right gif. Can we please get a Thrandy smile in BotFA, pleeeeeeeease? He has such a nice smile, and it’s not like it’s going to break his face to smile just once! He could smile at Bilbo because Bilbo makes everyone smile and feel an inexplicable urge to hug him. Yes please! That smirk in the Thorin questioning scene, while fabulous, doesn't quite count.

Whenever my mom sees that one, she says Thranduil looks just like a little boy who’s pouting because his feelings got hurt! Lol! LOL he does look a little petulant there. Too ageless is the problem I think. Loved the gif though. That is one tumblr I've stuck on follow. It puts up Alan Lee and John Howe art a fair bit

The interrogation scene, and gif responses
[In reply to]

Oh, 1 question: Do you know when I post an image, clicking on it (usually) leads to the source image or source page where the image came from? Yes, and that reminds me – I clicked on a pic of yours recently that linked to an article about The Fall that utterly delighted me. I’ve been meaning to talk about that, will soon! – caught up in our current topics at the moment. Even if no one else is interested, I don’t see why you should have to purvey these via PM. This is the Thranduil Appreciation Thread after all and these things are about Thranduil and for the general appreciation of him. Agree! What Eruvandi says. OK, now to check these links out. On the orc interrogation scene: I went straight to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gz3I7HCsMOU to watch the full thing again, for the first time since the big screen. Yes the camera work here is just wonderful, teasing us before showing us the full scene, and so allowing us to focus on what Thranduil is saying. Or he may be doing trainer assessment on Legolas and Tauriel's interrogation skillz? I like this notion that he is also carefully watching Legolas and Tauriel. He is certainly quick to dismiss Tauriel when she has perhaps breached his method by threatening the orc with death. (and certainly, an interrogation is less successful when the subject is dead) It gives the impression that he is intending to keep the orc alive, which is why it’s all the more enjoyably unexpected when he ‘frees his wretched head from his miserable shoulders’ (I so love that line!) Certainly Legolas looks a bit stunned. We’re also looking at Tauriel when Thranduil says he does not care about one dead dwarf. That dwarf being her new friend of course, and following on from him telling her that ‘other lands are not my concern’, we receive a particularly steely-hearted view of Thranduil from this… and I can’t help wondering if she is having thoughts of rebellion or disillusion. This could be where her determination to head out and give aid is cemented. When Legolas says ”There is no king under the mountain, nor will there ever be. None will enter Erebor while the dragon lives”… I wonder if he is talking with complete conviction, or whether it’s a denial tactic, aiming to keep the orc boastfully talking. S’funny, when I saw this scene in the film, I didn’t realise it took place in the throne room, even though the setting is quite clear, with the pillars and the steps. Possibly because we see it at a different angle to his scene with Thorin. But my perception was that this is taking place on a platform much lower in the palace, closer to either the dungeons, or the gates. It’s a perception I am still having trouble shaking. Yes it’s the throne room but it seems like somewhere else, to me. Random responses to gifs: Re ‘Serpents of the north’ -- and the gifs of LP, OB and EL reacting to what they’re watching – how I would love to have seen LP’s reaction when he first ever saw the scars they CGI’d onto his face. That would be priceless! http://lee-pace-everyday.tumblr.com/...tation-and-rejection…. Thranduil’s ‘state visit’ costume is truly a design that looks awesome from behind. The pattern and symmetry of his flash of white hair falling into that triangle that starts at those broad shoulders and falls to a point mid-back. And the crown above, and the colours. I find the aesthetics here very pleasing. http://mybabybop.tumblr.com/...02/thrandy-eye-candy – I love “Why do you linger in the shadows”, with Thranduil’s face as seen through Bilbo’s ring-bound eyes. Haven't seen this gif'd before. http://babybarnes23.tumblr.com/...-realm-on-his-throne Like in that large central image here, sometimes I catch a glimpse of the lower pointy tip of Thranduil’s crown, as it edges below his cheekbone, and it reminds me of the modern microphone head set that many dancers / singers / entertainers use these days (of which Madonna was an early adaptor) It just furthers that sense of rock star fabulosity. I too shall follow up with further thoughts on these plentiful links! Side note: I have been trekking through The Walking Dead S2, under slight pressure as it’s been lent by a friend, and I like to counteract the violence and grotesqueness by following each viewing with an episode of Pushing Daisies. Last night I watched PD S2 Ep4 and counted at no less than four adorable head tilts. (it could be a drinking game!) This is a much nicer note to go to bed on.

Well..."happy" relatively speaking anyway. He still didn't seem to like them. Ooh, do you know, Maeglin is the only Elf I really remember, from having read half the Sil eight years ago. He gets his own chapter (16). Generally, he is a bit of a cunning, unlikeable character, and I am intrigued by the images of him - dressed all in black - in my copy's gorgeous Ted Nasmith illustrations. There's even a Maeglin appreciation thread in the Reading Room ..http://newboards.theonering.net/...;;page=unread#unread though I'm not remotely familiar enough to partake in it. So there is more about him in CoH? Great

How did I miss this discussion??
Quote Kerewyn The dwarves were also 'accused' of being elf-friends. I was reading TH last night, where the Great Goblin yells "Murderers and elf-friends! ... Slash them! Yeah, I bet the dwarves were highly insulted at being called elf-friends! I can hear it now...Thorin says to the Great Goblin: "I can take a little torture and slave-labor, but calling us elf friends? That's low even for you!" I can imagine the Great Goblin's surprise and retort to being called low by a Dwarf. "Low? Low? You have no notion of low, you warmongering dwarf runt!"
Well..."happy" relatively speaking anyway. He still didn't seem to like them. Sounds deliciously gloomy - can't wait til I get into CoH when my order arrives Re: Elves and Men, and the estrangement thereof. I have not done my Silm re-reading, so this is a bit tough to set in the right context, but basically, the Elves started out viewing Men as some sort of new kid-brother whom Eru favoured (they can die), while Men, aside from the Edain, in general viewed Elves as too high and mighty. The Elf-Man alliance was always restricted to the nobility among Men I think. The Wars in the First Age had Elves and the high-born Men from the 3 houses of Edain on one side, and essentially every other race of Men on Morgoth's side. As time went on, Elves basically didn't even want anything to do with saving Middle-earth since it was not for them but for Men really - even the LA was a reluctant act of necessity because of the strength of Sauron's threat. Even in LotR, in Rivendell and particularly the Council of Elrond, it was directly mentioned or alluded to by the attendees, including Elrond, Aragorn, Boromir and Gandalf. Especially the finding and keeping of the Ring by Isildur which Elrond rued in his account. So in summary, yes, there are men who distrusted Elves and the feeling is generally mutual. Re Maeglin. He is a badass, along with Maedhros (he really had daddy issues ) Eh, I shouldn't say more since my own mem is so rusty.
Great points, Kerewyn and Eruvandi. I imagined Thranduil and the Master might have met, just to seal the trade agreements, probably back when the Master first assumed power. But then, Thranduil has dealt with successive Masters surely so he might already have a proxy arrangement to stop wasting his time with trivials (plus he probably got tired of the simpering he invariably cause the other guy). Perhaps Legolas or one of the unknown elf-lords of his court has charge of trade negotiations. But regardless, Thranduil might come face-to-face with the Master when he tows his army along to Erebor, especially if the Master was trying to one-up Bard's legitimacy. If this is the first meeting this Master has with Thranduil, he's going to be in for an encounter of a lifetime. Wonder what part Alfrid's would have to play in it all though. I'd like to see some snark, and maybe it won't be dished out by Thranduil directly, but for completeness, the Master and Alfrid will have to be put in place before the party moves to Erebor eh?
