More from Les MORDORserables: The Council of Elrond Can't Post

This post is inspired in part by this post in Off-Topic, and by the fact that the movie adaptation of Les Miserables the musical is coming next month.

The song / scene from a musical is meant to be part of my ongoing project Les MORDORserables, a musical version of JRR Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings, with nods to Peter Jackson’s film adaptation, set entirely to the songs and music of Les Miserables the Musical. Links to previous installments are here:

All You Have To Decide (Stars) and How the Road Goes Ever On (Do You Hear the People Sing?)

At the End of an Age (At the End of the Day)

One Day Mordor (One Day More) and Calas Galedhon (Castle on a Cloud)

Now I present The Council of Elrond, a reworking of I Dreamed a Dream (one of the songs sung by the Anne Hathaway character, Fantine, in the trailer for the upcoming Les Miserables movie), and Confrontation.

In Les Mis, I Dreamed a Dream has Fantine singing of her dismal past and how she still longs for the return of the man who fathered her child, then deserted her. Here, it becomes part 1 of the Council scene, where Boromir describes his prophetic "Seek for the Sword that was Broken" dream.

Confrontation is a duet between the sympathetic main character, Jean Valjean, and Inspector Javert, the nemesis who would arrest him and return Valjean to imprisonment after Valjean had broken parole and assumed a new identity. Valjean pleads for three days of freedom to fulfill his promise to Fantine to rescue her beloved daughter from the abusive M. And Mme. Threnardier, then would return to submit willingly to Javert's custody. Javert refuses to trust Valjean's word, thinking him an incorrigible criminal without honor. Their parts overlap as tension rises. Here, reworked as part 2 of the Council scene, the various participants argue over what should be done with the Ring, parts overlapping as each side attempts to prevail its views over the other.

The end part of Confrontation uses the same melody as I Dreamed a Dream. Thus, here, the Council scene both begins and ends with I Dreamed a Dream.

Council of Elrond Part 1 ( I Dreamed A Dream )

ELROND

Here we have guests, some Men who've come
And some Dwarves as well
And some Wood Elves invited
We have some guests hail from the Shire
Having dodged some Black Riders
Now let Lord Boromir
of Gondor have the floor.

(Boromir stands)

BOROMIR

I dreamed a voice speak in my mind
To seek the sword that once was broken
In Imladris it dwells, you'll find,
Stronger than Morgul spells, a token
And then my dream it said to me,
Of doom at hand, there counsels taken,
Halfling shall stand forth, it shall be
And Isildur's Bane shall awaken.

ARAGORN (stands up)

As the Shadow brings the night,
I bring answers that you ponder

(Presents his sword Anduril)

Once was Narsil, smote apart,
Now is forged again, remade!

BOROMIR (unimpressed)

What of the other clues and signs?
What of Isildur’s Bane, I wonder?

(Aragorn sits)

GANDALF

Perhaps there is no better time
Than now to show Isildur’s Bane.

Frodo, your cue: bring forth the Ring.
Let us share counsel here together.

(Boromir sits. Frodo rises, steps forth into the center, sets the Ring upon the pedestal, draws back to his seat. Gandalf also sits back down.)

BOROMIR

For Sauron’s foes, a gift I see!
Let Gondor use our Enemy’s weapon!

We keep Mordor at bay, you see,
By blood of our men, for your safety
Give Gondor this chance to be free
And thus fulfill the dream I‘ve dreamed.

Part 2 ( CONFRONTATION from Les Miz)

(Javert’s part)

ARAGORN (rises to his feet)

'Tis not for you
To master, none here can.

Lord Boromir,
It’s Sauron’s to command.

(Valjean’s part)

BOROMIR

What of this matter would a Ranger know?

LEGOLAS (standing)

No mere Ranger, he is Aragorn!

BOROMIR (still unimpressed)

Isildur’s Heir….

LEGOLAS

…. The heir to Gondor’s throne!

(Aragorn gently motions/asks Legolas to sit down, Legolas sits)

GANDALF

Aragorn is right, we cannot use the Ring.

ELROND

We have one choice, it must be destroyed.

GIMLI

Then why wait? This axe is all I need.

(GIMLI rises, armed with a battle axe, charges the pedestal, swinging down upon the Ring. BOOM, the axe explodes on impact and Gimli is thrown back sprawling. The Ring sits unmarked, undisturbed as though nothing had occurred.)

ELROND (he, and the entire Council, rises abruptly in alarm)

Alas Master Gimli, Son of Gloin
That is not how …

[his part continues into the section sung by Javert]

…the Ring can be destroyed.
Forged in the fires of Mount Doom it was,
Only there
can be unmade.

(here continues Valjean’s part. Here Valjean’s part gets a new verse added here, which is identical to the first part of his counterpart duet with Javert to follow.)

It must be
taken deep
Into Mordor, to Orodruin,
And there, cast into the cracks
from whence it came, where it was wrought.

One of you must do this task…

BOROMIR (continuing the verse Elrond started, of Valjean’s part)

…One does not simply walk
into the land where evil does not
sleep!

(Here begins Valjean’s and Javert’s counterpart duet.)

LEGOLAS (overlapping with BOROMIR/Javert in counterpart)

Have you not heard
What Lord Elrond’s said?
It must be destroyed...!

GIMLI (continuing Valjean’s part, overlapping with BOROMIR/Javert in counterpart)

…and I suppose you mean
by you, an Elf? I’d sooner be dead
Before I let that come to be!

BOROMIR (Javert’s part, overlapping with LEGOLAS & GIMLI/Valjean in counterpart)

A plan like this can never be
A plan like this can never be
No,
This folly cannot be!

GIMLI & DWARVES (standing as one)

We say never trust an Elf!

LEGOLAS & ELVES (standing as one) (overlapping with BOROMIR/Javert in counterpart)

Instead propose a Dwarf, we hear?

GIMLI & DWARVES (to ELROND, seemingly forgetting he is an Elf too)

They’ll
keep power for them-
selves!

BOROMIR (continuing Javert’s part, overlapping with LEGOLAS&GIMLI, and in counterpart) (to ELROND)

My duty’s to my Lord, my people in need,
Not with ten thousand can this be done
Wasteland, poison air to breathe,
We’ll fail, we’ll just give up the One!

(All present at the Council are now on their feet joining LEGOLAS&ELVES, GIMLI&DWARVES arguing in pantomime.)

GANDALF (continuing Valjean’s part, overlapping, counterpart with BOROMIR) (to all)

While we bicker here like foes,
Sauron’s power swiftly grows.
Strength divided, hope is lost,
We will be overrun!

BOROMIR (Javert’s part ,overlapping, counterpart with GANDALF)

Ever watchful, lidless Eye,
Enterers have it to pay
Dare we think to pass it by,
Barred by more than Orcs that way?

GANDALF (continuing Valjean’s part, overlapping in counterpart with BOROMIR)

ONE RING FORGED TO RULE THEM ALL,
BRING THEM WHERE THE SHADOWS LIE!
IN THE DARKNESS BIND US YET
OUR FATE IS ALL BUT DONE!

BOROMIR (Javert’s part ,overlapping, coujnterpart with GANDALF)

With the Ring we’ll take them all
With the Ring at Gondor’s call,
We have held them back for you
With it, we’ll defeat them too!

FRODO (Overlapping over GANDALF’s and BOROMIR’s last line above)

I WILL TAKE IT! I WILL TAKE IT TO MORDOR!

(Everyone falls silent to listen to him)

FRODO (Valjean’s part)

There I will take it, this I say . . .

GANDALF (Javert’s part)

This burden I will help you bear

FRODO

. . . Though… though I do not know the way.

ARAGORN (Javert’s part)

You have my sword, this do I swear

LEGOLAS (continuing Valjean’s part)

And my bow….

GIMLI (continuing the line)

…my axe,

BOROMIR (continuing the line)

… our fate.

GANDALF, ARAGORN, LEGOLAS, GIMLI, BOROMIR (to Frodo)

We swear to you …

(Sam runs in, stands among them, and Merry and Pippin follow suit)

JOINED BY SAM, MERRY, AND PIPPIN

.…we will be there.

This is wonderful! [In reply to] Can't Post

I look forward to more installments. This is an excellent way to equally satiate my excitement for TH and LM coming out this December. Smile

(also, I expect recordings of these at some point) Wink

Thank you Laerasëa :-) [In reply to] Can't Post

Glad you thought so! As someone who shares your excitement about both TH and LM, I have more of these installments coming.

As for a recording,I'm glad if you're interested. That may come later, possibly with a little help from a friend, if things go my way. Wink
