Back in the First Age of TORN.... [In reply to] Can't Post

someone did an excellent parody of One Day More. The site it was archived on is long gone, though. If only we could search the old boards....

Silverlode

"Of all faces those of our familiares are the ones both most difficult to play fantastic tricks with, and most difficult really to see with fresh attention. They have become like the things which once attracted us by their glitter, or their colour, or their shape, and we laid hands on them, and then locked them in our hoard, acquired them, and acquiring ceased to look at them.
Creative fantasy, because it is mainly trying to do something else [make something new], may open your hoard and let all the locked things fly away like cage-birds. The gems all turn into flowers or flames, and you will be warned that all you had (or knew) was dangerous and potent, not really effectively chained, free and wild; no more yours than they were you."

Thanks for the info, silverlode. I was unaware of it but not terribly surprised to hear of it.

I am curious to read (view?) it, but also curious to know whether my independently created version would be much like it, or different.

It was archived as part of the parody collection on Gorel's Lasselanta site, but that vanished in the great server crash, I believe. It would have been posted in 1999 or 2000. I should ask around among some of the other First Agers and see if anyone else remembers it.

It was me [In reply to] Can't Post

I was 21 and living in France and I wrote a lot of parodies that year! Reading over it again now it doesn't scan especially well, but here you go:

ONE DAY MORE (Les Mis - Alain Boubil, Claude Schoenberg, Herbert Kretzmer)

Frodo - One day more
Another day, another few more miles,
This never-ending road to Orodruin,
This ever-heavier burden,
Will surely kill me very soon.
One day more!
Eowyn - I did not live until today,
How can I live when we are parted?
F - one day more.
Aragorn and Arwen - Tomorrow we'll be worlds away,
And yet with you my world has started!
E - One more day all on my own,
A&A - Will we ever meet again?
E - One more day with him not caring,
A&A - I was born to be with you,
E - What a life I might have known ...
Arwen - And let me fight with you!
E - But he will never love me!
Denethor - One more day before the storm!
E - Do I follow Theoden now?
D - At the gates of Minas Tirith!
E - Shall I join my brother there?
D - When our might begins to fade,
F - Will I destroy It, do I dare?
Gandalf - Will you take your place with me?
All - the time is now, the dark is here!
F - One day more!
Sauron - One more day to dominition
I will squash them all so flat!
I'll be ready for these wizards
They'll be no more - sure of that!
Orcs - Watch 'em run amuck, spear 'em where they fall!
Never know your luck when there's a free for all.
Here a little slash, there a little slice,
Most of 'em are goners, so they won't miss much!
All Gondor - One day to a day of reckoning
(Raise the tree of Gondor high)
We are waiting for our king (waiting for our king)
There's a kingdom for the winning (a kingdom to be won)
Do you hear the Riders blow?
E - My place is here, I fight with you!
F - one day more!
Theoden - I did not live until today,
Merry - How can I live when we are parted?
S - I will marshal all my forces, I will use the crystal stone,
I will learn their little secrets, tomorrow Gondor's mine!
E - One more day all on my own.
F - one day more!
A&A - Tomorrow you'll be worlds away,
And yet with you my world has started.
S - One day more to dominition, I will flatten Gondor down,
I'll be ready for these wizards -
Orcs - Watch 'em run amuck, spear 'em where they fall,
Never know your luck when there's a free-for-all -
F - Tomorrow we'll be on Mount Doom,
Tomorrow is the judgement day,
All - Tomorrow we'll discover what our fate has in store,
One more dawn, one more day, one day more!

And I also did "Master of the House":

MASTER OF THE HOUSE (Les Mis, Boubil, Schoenberg, Kretzmer)

Welcome, hobbits,
Sit yourselves down,
And meet the only Innkeeper in town.
As for the guests,
What a mixed bag,
Some of them tall,
And some of them stout.
Seldom do you see,
Honest men like me,
A gent of good intent,
Forget something!

I'm the master of the House,
Doling out the beer,
Ready with a new one,
When y'r pint is clear,
Tells a bit of gossip,
Makes a little stir,
This is the Prancing Pony and you're welcome here.
Glad to do the folk a favour,
Doesn't cost me to be nice,
But surely Mr Under -
Wasn't there something to be said?

Master of the Pony,
Keeper of the news,
Willing to help out
Weary travellers.
Pulling pints of beer,
Keeping up my weight,
Talking to the hobbits,
Till it's much too late.
Everybody loves the Pony,
Everybody's fav'rite pub,
But wasn't there a letter,
That I should have given you?

Thank you for sharing that Eledhwen! [In reply to] Can't Post

I enjoyed that very much!

I happened to write my version of One Day More last night before reading yours, just to see how similar they would be. It appears I was right, we made similar choices.

I like your Master of the House approach better than what I originally had in mind. i laughed along Smile

Here are my versions of One Day More and Castle on a Cloud (abridged...I might add to it later for an "extended edition" to include the rest of the scene) [disclaimer: these are "drafts" that I wrote yesterday and today only]

first we have ....

Calas Galedhon (Castle on a Cloud from Les Miserables) (I wrote it this morning...its just a draft)

(The Fellowship has been allowed to enter Lothlorien blindfolded.)

HALDIR

We go to Calas Galedhon

Until we're there you may not see

Blindfolds for all your Company

That is the rule in Lorien.

GIMLI

There is a thing called courtesy
There is a thing our Elf hosts lack!

ARAGORN (to GIMLI)

Now, that was hardly courtesy

(TO HALDIR)

Please pardon my gruff companion.

(They arrive)

GIMLI

Who is that lady all in light?

FRODO

I think she's speaking in mind...!

LEGOLAS

She's nice to see....

BOROMIR

But she frightens much.

GIMLI

What's this I feel? I love her very much.

GALADRIEL

Yours is a path that saw one more

CELEBORN

Where is the wizard?

ARAGORN

He has died.

LEGOLAS

Balrog of Morgoth pulled him down

ARAGORN

Ere we reached here, fair Lorien.

[to be continued in a "Special Extended Edition" if I manage to get to it]

And next we have....

ONE DAY MORDOR (One Day More, from Les Miserables)

(One day before Siege of Gondor. Arwen expects to sail West next day. Aragorn is about to take the Paths of the Dead. Frodo and Sam follow Gollum up the long stair to Cirith Ungol. Faramir has left Osgiliath to Gothmog and returns to report to Denethor. In Minas Tirith, Denethor sits lost in his grief over Boromir’s death. Gothmog prepares to lead his Orc army as part of Mordor’s assault upon the White City.)

GANDALF

One day more
Another day until the coming ruin

FRODO

This never ending road to Oroduin...

SAM

The Stinker's actin' awful sly, I'd say its just an alibi...

GANDALF

One day more....

ARAGORN (to ARWEN in his thoughts)

I did not live before we met
How can I live if we are parted?

GANDALF

One day more....

ARAGORN & ARWEN

Tomorrow we'll be worlds away
But when we met our world had started

EOWYN

One more day I'm on my own

ARAGORN & ARWEN

Will we ever meet again?

EOWYN

One more day of him not caring

ARAGORN & ARWEN

I was born to be with you!

EOWYN

What a life I might have known

ARAGORN & ARWEN

And I swear I will be true!

EOWYN

But he never saw me there

GOTHMOG

One more day before the storm!

FARAMIR

Was it wise to let them go?

GOTHMOG

We'll have Man obliterated!

FARAMIR

To defy my father's will?

GOTHMOG

When their ranks begin to fall

FARAMIR

Do I follow him still?

GOTHMOG

Age of Orc will come to be!

MEN OF MINAS TIRITH and ORCS OF MORDOR

The time is now the day is here!

GANDALF

One day more!!!!

DENETHOR

One more day of no solution
Hope lies withered in the bud
I will join the kings of heathens
Ere the world is drowned in blood

GOLLUM

Watch 'em climbing up
Trick 'em so they fall
Wicked tricksy Bagginses will pay for all
Here a little dip, there a little touch
Soon we takes the precious, no, it won't take much!

MEN OF MINAS TIRITH

One day to a new beginning....

OATHBREAKERS

Where's the sword we rally ' round?

MEN OF MINAS TIRITH

The returning of our king...?

OATHBREAKERS

The returning of the king...?

MEN OF MINAS TIRITH

There's a Fourth Age for the winning....

OATHBREAKERS

There's a curse to be undone!

MEN OF MINAS TIRITH

Do you hear the Morgul din?

ARAGORN

The sword is here, now what say you???

GANDALF

One day more!!!

ARAGORN

I bid you stand, Men of the Dead!

EOWYN

One more day fighting on my own!

FRODO

Here at the end of all things started...

DENETHOR(overlapping)

I will build a pyre of heathens
None shall follow where I go
Save for Faramir, I'll save him
From the sorrows he might know

GANDALF

One day more!

GOTHMOG

Tomorrow they'll be wiped away!

EOWYN

What a life I might have known!

SAM

We've come so close! Be not downhearted.

DENETHOR(overlapping)

One more day of no solution
Hope dies withered in the bud
We'll get ready, bring more oil, boys!

GOLLUM (overlapping)

Watch 'em climbing up
Trick 'em so they fall
Wicked tricksy Bagginses will pay for all

GANDALF

Tomorrow isn't far away,
Tomorrow will be judgement day

ALL

Tomorrow we'll discover what Eru
in Aman has in store!
One more dawn?
One more day
One day mo-
O-o-o-ore!

In Calas Galedhon, Frodo's line "I think she's speaking in mind...!" was missing the word "my", so it should be

In Calas Galedhon, Aragorn's line to Haldir had too many syllables. The "Please" should be dropped, thus "Pardon my gruff companion".

I had fun writing it. I am quite a fan of that musical...I am not really big on musicals, but this one grabbed me.

I still say I much enjoyed your version. I like the different choices you made. I would add that if you really wanted it to scan better, only a few simple tweaks would be needed.

Actually we could continue the project, by collaborating. We already have three songs. I could work on At the End of the Day and perhaps you might try On My Own...or I Dreamed A Dream... as examples. What do you think?

AT THE END OF AN AGE (At the End of the Day, Les Miserables) [In reply to] Can't Post

OK I've worked on it and here's what I have so far.

AT THE END OF AN AGE (At the End of the Day, from Les Miserables, the Complete Symphonic recording)

[HIGH ELVES ARE LOOKING WEST TO THE GREY HAVENS ANTICIPATING THEIR FINAL DEPARTURE WESTWARD. ARAGORN IS LEAVING MIRKWOOD AFTER HAVING DELIVERED GOLLUM TO THE MIRKWOOD ELVES AT GANDALF’S REQUEST. FRODO AND SAM PACK IN HASTE TO LEAVE THE SHIRE TO EVADE WITCHKING AND THE BLACK RIDERS WHO ARE NEARING, HUNTING THE RING AND ITS BEARER. MERRY AND PIPPIN SUSPECT FRODO’S PLAN AND INTEND TO CONFRONT HIM. RADAGAST HAS EMBARKED TO WARN GANDALF OF THE NAZGUL WHO HAVE CROSSED INTO ERIADOR, WHILE SARUMAN AWAITS GANDALF’S VISIT. BOROMIR, GIMLI, AND LEGOLAS SEPARATELY HEAD TOWARD RIVENDELL TO ATTEND THE COUNCIL OF ELROND. GOLLUM SLINKS OUT INTO THE NIGHT DETERMINED TO REPOSSESS HIS PRECIOUS.]

HIGH ELVES

At the end of an Age it’s a world gotten older
And that’s all we can say here of fair Middle Earth
It’s a struggle, it’s a war
There is good here worth fighting for gaining
But if victory will be ours, what is there more?
Still, our time here is waning.

ARAGORN

At the end of the day you’re another day colder
And the cloak on your back doesn’t keep out the chill
But that “creature,” nabbed at last
Can’t afford to let him go flying
For the Shadow is coming on fast, ready to kill
One day nearer to dying!

HIGH ELVES

To the West of the world there’s better world waiting
Where the sun in the morning comes swiftly to rise
Past a curtain of silver glass
A fair country of green where we’re beckoned.

Here a hunger Sauron has
There’s a reckoning yet to be reckoned
And the battles are yet to be waged
At the end of an Age.

SAM

At the end of the day we’ll need something for cookin’
So I’ll pack up some pans and some salt and some bread….

FRODO

There are Ringwraiths near our home
And the time is at hand that we’ve fled
And we’re lucky to be here at all

SAM

And we’re not dead

BOTH

And we’re counting our blessings!

RADAGAST (TO GANDALF)

Have you heard how the Nazgul are nearing this way?
With their terrible breath and fell blades in their hands?
It’s because someone with knowledge has given away
That the Ring’s in the Shire, this he now understands!
Now our boss, he always knows
What to do when we’re feeling the heat

GANDALF

Tell your bird friends look out
To Orthanc send word,
I’ll be there in a beat.

BOROMIR

At the end of the day it’s a dream that I ponder
Now a sword that was broken is something I seek

GIMLI

Said a horseman to our King
He was looking for some little “Hobbit”

LEGOLAS (Overlapping)

It was looking for some little “Hobbit”

GIMLI

He was looking for some ring….

LEGOLAS (Overlapping)

….Up a tree it...

LEGOLAS (solo)

… stayed, we dared not chop it.
That Gollum, it got away
At the end of the day!

(MERRY AND PIPPIN confront FRODO AND SAM)

MERRY

What have we here, little innocent cousin?

PIPPIN

Come on ol’ chap, let’s have all the news!
If you ask me, you seem wanting for running….

MERRY

To Buckleb’rry Ferry!

JOINED BY PIPPIN

There’s no time to lose!

FRODO

You should both leave us be
It is none of your business
With Black Riders near home
On the Westfarthing side
There’s not anyone there
Who’d withstand their fell might
Those with something to fear
Would do best now to hide.

[BLACK RIDER APPEARS, SHRIEKS, THEY FLEE IN PANIC.]

SARUMAN (TO GANDALF)

The Shire, the Ring there this whole time?
The Halfling’s weed, it’s slowed your mind?
The hour is late, the Nine upon us!
They’ve crossed the Isen, robed in Black
They’ll find the object of pursuit
None can stem their attack.
I bid you join, with me, their Lord
And use what wisdom as you can---

GANDALF

When did you change from wise to mad?

(They duel. Gandalf is captured. Meranwhile, the Black Riders’ pursuit has been foiled temporarily by the Hobbits’ use of Buckleberry Ferry)

WITCHKING

At the end of the day it’s a “Shire” and a “Baggins”
There’s a “thing” that’s been hidden in some little town

JOINED BY OTHER NAZGUL

There’s a name we’ve learned to say
You can guess how we take information

WITCHKING

You can bet Gollum’s earning its keep screaming aloud
As the boss would like it.

GOLLUM

Yes they hurtsed us, tortured us
All for the preciousss
Just to learn about “Bagginses” hailed from “the Shires”
Then they lets us go creepsing about in the night
To take back what is ours
What they knows we desires

(THE FOUR HOBBITS HAVE SUCCESSFULLY FLED THE BLACK RIDERS VIA BUCKLEBERRY FERRY)

MERRY (TO FRODO AND SAM)

At the end of the day you’ve been nothing but trouble

PIPPIN

And there’s trouble for all when there’s trouble for one

FRODO

I’ve been burdened, let it be said,
With a secret that cannot be uttered

SAM

He needs help getting away
Or we’re all gonna end in the gutter

MERRY & PIPPIN

So it’s us together to stay

JOINED BY FRODO AND SAM

At the end of the day!

BREE GATEKEEPER

Who comes a-knockin’ at the gate?
I’d like to know who calls this late?
Four Hobbits, here? What is your business?

FRODO

Good sir, our business is our own
We’re heading for the Prancing Pon’

GATEKEEPER

Meant no offence, sir, have no doubt
There’s talk of strange folk hereabout
It’s just the next sign to the right.

FRODO

Then we do thank you sir, good night.

SAM

It’s the farthest from home
Now that I’ve ever been.

MERRY & PIPPIN

And we think that you’ll say that again and again.

FRODO

Must meet Gandalf today!

SAM, MERRY & PIPPIN (overlapping)

Meet the wizard today!

FRODO (spoken)

Right, dear friends. On our way.

First of all, THANK YOU to everyone who volunteered!!!HeartSmile Everything is coming together nicely, IMO.Cool

So far we have:

gammaboodawg - Middle-Earth Recipes
Ruxendil_Thoorg - Parodies
Stormcrow20 - Caption Contest
Altaira - Bilbo's Brainteasers Quiz

I'm going to be doing a "Guess the Avvie" game as well as a TORn thread where people can get on and basically talk everything TORn like, how the found it, why they stayed, something funny the remember happening, their username and avvie meanings, cool things that has happened because of TORn, moots they've been too, etc, etc.

From what I've sort of gathered it seems that Ruxendil_Thoorg, Ethel Duath, and QuackingTroll are working on some parodies together.

Some who have read the book, or at any rate have reviewed it, have found it boring, absurd, or contemptible; and I have no cause to complain, since I have similar opinions of their works, or of the kinds of writing they evidently prefer.

Good becomes great. Bad becomes worse.  This is why you were chosen.  Because a strong man who has known power all his life may lose respect for that power.  But a weak man knows the value of strength and knows compassion.

What! You don't know [In reply to] Can't Post

what the Lore of the TORn Staff Creatures is? Why, it's Treebeard's Lore of the Living Creatures - but the venue is TORn, not Middle-earth! Laugh I wrote it up for the first Founder's Day.

I have to update it, then make sure everyone is on it who should be on it...

And of course, I expect Alassëa to post her superb Valaquenta of TORn! Heart
