The Silmarillion or Tolkien artwork.

I think the latter (Tolkien artwork) is my personal choice. The last time we discussed The Silmarillion, I dropped out of the discussion (which might be a good thing for me, so I'm not crying about it). But it does seem like time for The Silmarillion, unless people want to discuss Tolkien artwork. We did this in the past and it was fun. Perhaps it is time to do it again.
N.E.B. can correct me if I am wrong, but I think we've also had primary discussions of Unfinished Tales, Children of Hurin, and LotR by theme rather than by chapter. I think it is too soon to return to LotR, although I would consider another thematic discussion in the future. I don't think I would participate in a discussion of Unfinished Tales or Children of Hurin, and I don't think many other people would either.
Even if I dropped out of a discussion of The Silmarillion, I'm confident others would be interested. But let's consider returning to Tolkien artwork, if not now, then in the future.

What would we discuss, exactly?
"How much was Tolkien a man of his times?", "What previous literature influenced him?", "How much did his school studies and life experiences affect him?", "What process did he use to write The Hobbit, LOTR, etc.?", "What were the individual influences of The Inklings?", "What was the influence of Catholicism?", and so on.
Basically pretty much what we've already discussed now and then, here and there, in bits and pieces, but this time as a continuous and coherent main discussion with a common authoritative text.

I certainly have much to learn about his biography. Like Tolkien, I'm skeptical about the connection between biography and fiction, at least as put together by anyone other than the author or someone who knew him intimately, but discussing his biography is a good way to put that skepticism to the test.

Before he signed up to lead "Fire and Water", he had mentioned that he'd be traveling abroad the first part of this month with an indeterminate return date; I wonder if his travel was extended? If his discussion isn't underway by midday (US eastern time) tomorrow, I'll open the week for free-for-all discussion.

so that the discussion ends up around Christmas? I’ve never read it myself so I have no idea how long it is. If it’s too short to fill August through December perhaps we could discuss another short work beforehand so that the timing is right. Tolkien’s letters? Roverandum? I haven’t read any of these but would like to. My birthday is coming up in about a month so now would be the perfect time to start dropping hints to UT for bookish gifties. :o)

Its a nice change and I think it could be very interesting to read and study the source, Tolkien, and get an idea of thos ethings which they say influence d him and his writings.
But the Christmas Letters sound good around December too!

I missed The Sil last time round for some reason and I'm about due a re-read. I should have some more time on my hands now that I'm finished with my epic journey through higher education.
I've read a couple of bios - which one do you guys have in mind?
