The Hobbit – Discussion Schedule Can't Post

In the Reading Room, there are two kinds of discussions.

First, there are one or more scheduled (but not stuffy!) weekly discussions, in which participants sign up in advance to discuss a particular subject in depth over the course of a week. Usually the subject is a chapter from one of Tolkien’s best-known full-length books, and these are discussed in order. Such a list appears below, for The Hobbit. Typically the discussion leader posts from one to three threads daily with questions about passages from the text. Sometimes a “secondary discussion” runs concurrently with this chapter discussion. The subjects of these discussions are usually more obscure, and are discussed in fewer threads, typically two to four each week.

Second, there are independent discussion threads, which anyone may post at any time – with only the caveats that first, one shouldn’t post new threads about the chapter or subject currently under (scheduled) discussion; and second, no one person should post so many threads as to singlehandedly overwhelm the scheduled discussions. Otherwise, as it says in the welcome message above, if you have a question about Tolkien, this is the right place to ask it!

Here is the final schedule for our discussion of The Hobbit. If you have questions about the schedule, please post them here, or send me a PM. Thank you to everyone who signed up, and enjoy the discussions!

Schedule for “leader’s choice” discussions. [In reply to] Can't Post

While we spend twenty weeks discussing The Hobbit, we’ll also be hearing from some “secondary” discussion leaders, who will post on various subjects of their choice. For some ideas about possible discussion subjects, see this post. As you can see, there are still plenty of slots available on this schedule. If you wish to sign up for one or more weeks, please post a response here or send me a PM. These discussions normally consist of two to four threads per week. It’s not necessary to name your subject in advance: you can simply claim a week, if you wish. In fact, as Darkstone has lately shown with his six-part discussion of Tolkien’s poem, “Cat” –and as NZ Strider showed in years past with his “Let’s Talk Dragons” and “Bombadillion” series, among others– it’s almost unnecessary to preschedule at all for such a free-wheeling short series (particularly for posts on the weekend). However, if the mood so takes you, please time your series so it doesn’t overlap with one of the announced weeks below.

And remember, single threads posted by anyone on any subject (except for the chapter or subject currently under discussion) are welcome at any time in the Reading Room. Post away!
