Book spoiler The emeralds of Girion is a necklace of 500 emeralds given by Girion [Bard's ancestor] to the dwarves in payment for arming his son in dwarf mail of silver [mithril?] Emeralds are apparently associated with the Elves and also called beryls or elf-stones. In LOTR, when the hobbits and Aragorn were running from the Nazgul after Frodo had been attacked by them, Aragorn finds a beryl on a bridge which had been left there as a token by Glorfindel. So, I assume the sentence means that it was Thranduil who loved the emeralds. Mind you, the sentence can be read either way.

With Leggy learning surfing from pop Thrandy. So cool that even a 40+ spinster like myself had to say so. But on an unrelated note, from my reading of Silm and then the appendices to LOTR - I always feel that Thrandy eventually set sail for Aman, maybe even before Legolas and Gimli. When the great professor noted that after Aragorn's passing and the end of his long life - Legalos and his pal set sail - well that was over 100 years - maybe Thrandy had already boarded a speed boat before that time with Bubba - there was another cute GIF with that similar image that I liked. **Old but dedicated Thrandy Thrall, ltnjmy**

Thranddy is always KINGLY and fashionable no matter the occasion Leggy just got lots to notate. Maybe there's a certification after all that - Thranddy's prolly giving him a dry run cos he couldn't stand the idea of his kid not nailing it the first time.

I remember reading that there was a version of history that says Thranduil established his kingdom... though of course, I can't find that particular reference RIGHT NOW In recompense, a few (not all relevant) readings that might interest (and confuse ) further:

Would have posited he in the sentence meant Thranddy and left it at that. But you took it further with the helpful LotR reference, which never crossed my mind. So glad, doubly so, that you decided to leave the STV ranks

I'm with you on that one, I'd ike to understand this means Celeborn DID eventually leave ME and sail West. And by being the last of the Eldar to remember the Elder days in ME, this would mean Thranduil indeed left before him. Ahh let me have my happy thought on this one, I would be very sad to learn otherwise. It makes sense of Celeborn eventually sailing West, to be reunited with Galadriel. Do All Elves Leave Middle-earth?

Is it conclusion by association given that costume in the first shot is next to Thranduil's wardrobe in the orc beheading? If not, is it a new costume we've not seen yet? I thought it most resembled this concept art:

Re Gondor's relations with Eryn Lasgalen, good point about most contact would probably go (if any) through Faramir and Legolas (of course) since Faramir is the Steward and Aragorn would probably not occupy himself too much with keeping a close relationship with Thranduil. Although interesting thought you have about this might be very differently than we percieve if Aragorn/Thranduil would have met before. Didn't Aragorn take Gollum to Mirkwood to ask the Elves if they could watch him? He must have asked Thranduil's permission, so I'm sure they would have met before (only I'm not sure Thranduil would have taking much liking in Aragorn if this was their only contact). Just wanted to back up for a bit and talk to this bit (after straightening out some of my *ahem* notes ) I do believe they have met before. At least 11 years prior to Aragorn bringing Gollum to Mirkwood. Gandalf started the Gollum search with Aragorn and they would have gone to Mirkwood to start the CSI before moving on. But I think even before that, Aragorn might have passed through Mirkwood earlier in his life. I think that the multiple meetings between them would have alerted Thranduil to Aragorn being someone special. I pieced these bits together in researching the Hunt for Gollum process, and at least that's how I've written it in my work-in-progress (so I keep telling myself) ficcie But as is with everything Aragorn, not many would know of his true heritage and great doom. And no one important and in the know would think it necessary to give Thranduil a headsup (with the way things are during the LotR period, I would think that's wise since it seems walls literally have ears). The interesting thing though, to me, would be how Thranduil felt when he found out the truth identity of Aragorn, and how did he find out. Ok... over and out. .

My first thought on seeing the silvery tunic is that it looks very similar to what Legolas is wearing during Aragorn's coronation. (having again just gone back to titter at this one from a few pages back. Without the olive cloak though. Perhaps by the time of the coronation, Thrandy had 'handed it down'. Or maybe Leggy was going through dad's wardrobe: "Ada, you have the best gear. I really like this one - can I borrow it? Aw please?"

Thranduil seems to live content in northern Eryn Lasgalen (the former Mirkwood) for many centuries. Contentedly breeding orchids and elks, restoring the forest to health and walking in starlight. I often wonder what he would do in his centuries' worth of spare time.
Gondor will, according to Tolkien’s letter and notes, fall into strife as some sort of Fourth Age cult takes root and traces of the “old evil” return. Interesting. I'd like to read these notes, and if only Tolkien had felt the urge (or lived long enough) to write this sequel.
In The Peoples of Middle-earth we learn a few more details that, according to one of Tolkien’s letters, had to be omitted from the published book for lack of space. Can't a book be as long as it needs to be? It's not a movie!

The interesting thing though, to me, would be how Thranduil felt when he found out the truth identity of Aragorn, and how did he find out. Being highly intuitive, he may have had the instinct Aragorn was no ordinary ranger. (I haven't read enough Silm yet to discuss the race of Men from which Aragorn is descended.) But 'one king to another'? If it were me, I would hope I had behaved graciously enough. I don't know if Thranduil is given to any such regrets. I imagine Legolas would have returned there at some stage to fill everyone in, but news may have travelled there in other ways as well, especially regarding the outcome of the War. Just how 'global' is ME anyway, in terms of news reach?

Very cool analysis Luker - Thrandy did most probably leave
[In reply to]

I with the great professor gave more clues - but by saying that Celeborn was the last to leave remembering the elder days of ME - I am of the hope that this meant his kinsman Thranduil most probably departed on a magical speed boat with Bubba before him. Many always say that the sons of Elrond must of accepted mortality by staying after the departure of their father but I don't think that is necessarily so. Since they lived as Eldar - setting up side-by-side thrones in Imladris - perhaps doesn't this mean that they accepted immortality and thus only deferred their choice for a time ???

You're right, I hadn't even noticed but it seems he does not wear any armour. Unlike the Rohan horses who were heading to battle f.e.
Especially Theoden's horse, looks like he's got some sort of protection around his entire body, like a rug of some sort. But nothing on Bubba... maybe he won't ride him into battle after all and is just used to get from point A to point B, with maximum fabulosity exposure?
