of course. But the nerd is also itchy... Noticing the elf in the background on the right. Just wonder the context of the shot. Any theories, fellow Thralls?

Re my fuzzy book details - but how does all this come together? So Bard is at Laketown, does Thranduil form an alliance with him there, and then offer go ahead and see if the dwarves are truly dead? But then who are the bodies? They look like Laketowners - so did Laketowners head for the mountain, figuring they could get some gold (still assuming the dwarves are all dead) and think it's obvious they were killed by orcs - not too surprising as Beorn had talked about the growing number of orcs, and orcs had already been sniffing around Laketown, and could still be tracking dwarves down. I'm gonna assume Thranduil doesn't routinely travel alone as king (unless he wants to, e.g. the stag). Any more than Thorin rowed the boat across to Erebor. It would make sense he would head a scouting party, especially since he knew Erebor and wants his white gems. And where is Legolas? Why wouldn't he go with his father? Or does Thranduil just ignore the refugee camp, in the sense that Bard is there handling things - but will Bard mention there had been dwarves at his house, now missing? And why, since both Fili and Kili were in Laketown, are THEY assumed dead? Because even if Smaug had killed Thorin, the heir to a throne is still alive, or does Thranduil not know - or not care - of the possible existence of Fili and Kili? Or is the fact that there are THREE Heirs of Durin, not just Thorin, not matter and will be a big hole in the movie that PJ doesn't deal with? So for me, inquiring minds want to know how Thranduil ends up checking things out in Dale in the first place, with so far no Legolas and no Bard around? Then there are those shots of Bard and Legolas talking, so does Thranduil tell his son to handle things at Laketown, he is going ahead to Erebor? And SQUEEE what if there IS a clash of kings - Thranduil that glorious armour makes it to Erebor, and guess who is there in all his chocolate leather glory - OMG the thought of if....

Quote Re my fuzzy book details - but how does all this come together? Thanks for humouring us, precious So many intriguing details to ponder in the adaptation! In the book Thranduil doesn't stop in Dale at all. In fact, none of the characters does and there's no action there. Of course it also meant Thranduil simply popped up once in a bit and delivers his cool lines and do his cool stuff before, during and after the Battle. I want to believe the changes PJ and crew does mean there's MORE Thranduil!time in the movie. I don't want to posit too much and get spoiled (I still like my movies to have surprises... that I LIKE hopefully) but I can't resist the nerding
I'm gonna assume Thranduil doesn't routinely travel alone as king (unless he wants to, e.g. the stag). Any more than Thorin rowed the boat across to Erebor. It would make sense he would head a scouting party, especially since he knew Erebor and wants his white gems. No indeed. I think both Thranduil and Thorin are old-school in that way. As in they believe in pomp and formalities, as in even if they're practical they understand the use of fanfare and pomp in sending and maintaining a message. For Thranduil, he's been King so long, and with his folk being long-lived, things can get a bit too familiar and pally after a while, and I imagine it might be an impediment to his kingly duties to have that gap closed. So he would maintain what may otherwise be facetious procedures to continually remind his folk he is KING. Thorin needs to keep sending that message for quite the opposite - Dwarves seemed to be all for proper hierarchy and tradition. So with the Goblin wars' aftermath, he is still just King-in-waiting as far as the seven kingdoms are concerned... until he has the Arkenstone. But he is de-facto KING with Thror and Thrain missing. I can't imagine it being easy for him to lead effectively over the long-term just on moral-authority. He would need to build and maintain his Kingly cred for conviction and hold his own when he does connect with the rulers of the other kingdoms. So of that high-and-mighty i-dont-lift-my-pinky-talk-to-the-tangled-mane act usually goes some way in that. But! Regardless, I think Thranduil would not head a scouting party - too small and functional a force out of necessity. Besides scouting is important but too menial for a King to personally direct. He would probably lead an advance party, so that he still has a tasteful number of Elves with him even if light in arms, and the proper fanfare and pomp can still proceed him and ready the folks for his parade He might personally direct a Black Ops making a run for them Gems though. I'd like to see that
And where is Legolas? Why wouldn't he go with his father? & Then there are those shots of Bard and Legolas talking, so does Thranduil tell his son to handle things at Laketown, he is going ahead to Erebor?
hmmm... methinks it's not a matter of choice, as in he's prolly off on a different errand, or perhaps still dallying with Bolg
& Or does Thranduil just ignore the refugee camp, in the sense that Bard is there handling things - but will Bard mention there had been dwarves at his house, now missing? And why, since both Fili and Kili were in Laketown, are THEY assumed dead? Because even if Smaug had killed Thorin, the heir to a throne is still alive, or does Thranduil not know - or not care - of the possible existence of Fili and Kili? Or is the fact that there are THREE Heirs of Durin, not just Thorin, not matter and will be a big hole in the movie that PJ doesn't deal with? So for me, inquiring minds want to know how Thranduil ends up checking things out in Dale in the first place, with so far no Legolas and no Bard around? So maybe the Laketowners tried to make a treasure-run and got the run-in of their lives re Bolg? And perhaps someone, maybe a dishy Elven scout report strangers loitering in Dale and the inimitable Magnificence goes to check it out because orcs mean Legolas may be there and in trouble?
And SQUEEE what if there IS a clash of kings - Thranduil that glorious armour makes it to Erebor, and guess who is there in all his chocolate leather glory - OMG the thought of if.... There better be! I want to see the maelstrom of froth and cacao powder in the latte cup Of course Thranduil gets to Erebor. What are you saying? He and new BFF Bard gets to tsk Thorin and thwock him in his treasure-arrogance, thanks to everyone's favourite Hobbit.

Not humoring you at all! I just hadn't snapped into thinking about what Thranduil is DOING in Dale - but how Thranduil enters this fray is one of the things I am MOST curious about. Because 1) His son and Tauriel are both missing, and weren't supposed to be and 2) Does Thranduil just get mad re them missing, take a look out his door, and know something is terribly wrong? Will he simply intuit that? Or will Legolas inform him? Details, details..... Can you talk about the dynamic a bit between your character and his father, and how much of that do we actually get to see? BLOOM: I can, somewhat reluctantly, because I think it’s more interesting for people to see it. And when I say to you there is a certain rivalry– A prince versus a king, a father versus a son, there’s definitely a bit of father-son rivalry, prince-king rivalry that forwards the story, I don’t really want to elaborate on it more than that, but it makes for a more interesting dynamic. Thranduil being the king of the Woodland Realm and, as I’ve said, those Elves being more of a militant group of Elves. Knowing that Legolas goes on to be a bridge, like an architect for peace between the Elves and the rest of the world, you might be able to guess there might be a little bit of me trying to understand more of what the plight of the rest of the world is and therefore somewhat coming up against odds with my father. Does that help? Read more at http://collider.com/orlando-bloom-the-hobbit-desolation-of-smaug-interview/2/#hW0O9Lu10XzJRGaA.99 Hmmm - but this is from LAST YEAR and who knows what PJ is gonna do. Far as I know only Thranduil could permit the elves to help the Laketowners. Anyway, I wouldn't call these dynamics a RIVALRY. And I also remember some article where it's Thranduil who eventually sends his son into the world - think that was an LP article. LOL:
So of that high-and-mighty i-dont-lift-my-pinky-talk-to-the-tangled-mane act usually goes some way in that. But we LIKE that....*grins* Oh, yes...
He might personally direct a Black Ops making a run for them Gems though. I'd like to see that Well, yes, I KNOW Thranduil gets to Erebor. I'm salivating over the idea of Thranduil getting to Erebor FIRST tho and HE is the one that makes the rude discovery that my hairy guys are still, in fact, very much alive . Possibly livened up with some choice remarks and an arrow from my beloved , who is none too happy to see the pristine perfect visage of the moonlight silver Elven King. And POSSIBLY this is what sets Thorin off to decorating himself in kingly gear, as a sort of simultaneous claim stake and up-yours. So when the rest of the uninvited rabble leeches greasy peasants Laketowners show up, they are greeted w. a firmly imbedded King Beneath the Mountain, crowned and everything. As you say, it's all about PRESENTATION and Thorin isn't gonna "greet" the golddiggers looters losers Laketowners in some tatty bathrobe-thing.

Thranduil related theory about Bard and Mirkwood army in the teaser
[In reply to]
|
|
|
My aunt and I were discussing the teaser trailer and I now have a theory about what was really happening in the scene where Bard walks up to the army from Mirkwood and the elves turn in unison. I've seen some people both on the message boards and elsewhere seeming to think that this scene means that Bard is in charge of a part of the Mirkwood army, but I've disagreed with this from the beginning. For one thing, when Bard first approaches the army and the camera is behind him (first link), you can see other Lake-town refugees off to the right of the scene looking amazed and curious, as if the army has just arrived. Then when the camera switches to be in front of Bard, IMO the expression on his face is just as amazed as the other Lake-towners. If he had already met with Thranduil and seen the army, I would think he'd have a more matter-of-fact, "Ok you're here, lets get down to business" expression on his face. Secondly, when the elves turn in unison, Bard stops himself mid-stride, and his eyes dart around as if he's startled and wasn't expecting them to do that. Also, the elves turn sideways to face each other, which would be an odd way to turn, IMO, if they were simply acknowledging/saluting him. And, comparing the two pictures, you can see that the elves have turned so that they are parted right down the middle: five rows on one side of the part and five rows on the other side. (There's a tree in the way of the left side of the first pic, but you can still count five rows of elves from the center of the army). To me, all of this raises the question of why did the elves turn so that their army is parted down the middle like that? Well, that's where the theory that my aunt and I came up with comes in: I think the army is either making a path for Bard to walk down to meet Thranduil, or they are making a path for Thranduil to walk up to meet Bard. Since Thranduil is the Elvenking and Bard doesn't seem to know what's going on, I would say the later is more likely. After all, it fits Thranduil's style that his arrival in Dale with his army would have an element of pomp and circumstance. So, what do my fellow Thralls think? Is this scene simply the entrance of Thranduil into Dale?

Those were some really good videos! (translation: LP's so ridiculously cute! Aaaaaah! ) I don't think I've seen any of them before. I really like that LP and CB were walking and doing their press interviews together during SDCC. There's no indication whether or not Thranduil and Galadriel will ever be on screen together, so I'll take what I can get! I don't think their characters would get along that well, but their RL counterparts go together very well, IMO. In that first video, I love how friendly they all are with the reporter (not unusual for the Hobbit cast, but still ) and I especially think it's nice that Luke Evans remembered her even though he probably does dozens of interviews every few months. I have to give BC a little love too for the cute moment at 3:10 when the reporter asks when they last cried during a movie, if boys even cry at movies and BC gives her this silly look and says, "Uh, yeah-huh! We too have emotions!" Lol! The second CB and LP video: I'm glad they could understand what the reporter was saying, because I sure couldn't! Ah, very, very nice piccies! I love the "Elven royalty reality vs. expectation". Rofl! To all the LP-only pics: Can't...stop...smiling!

LP said in that video he just met CB early that day, so that's confirmation that they didn't get to work together and won't be on screen together in TH. That's what I get for replying without watching all of the videos first. Also, that adorkable blush when he says meeting CB was the highlight of his experience! That female reporter is made of stronger stuff than I, because I think I would have mentally blacked out if LP had asked me what costume I thought would suit him! She handled it quite well, IMO.

I don't think we could see the elf in the background in the original pic could we? Although it's blurry, IMO it looks a little like one of the female elves from the background of the Thrandy/Gandalf pic. It looks like she's holding a weapon up in front of her, so I guess this is during the battle? Soooo, maybe Thranduil is looking at something dramatic going down and the elves are getting ready to go attack or something?

Nice spotting Eruvandi! - Hadn't thought about the image - but in the Art book for DOS - not the C & D book - they talk about being inspired by an image from Russia of all the war devastation around a statue of happy children playing, and what an evocative image it is. And they wanted to bring that into Dale, with the lovely carousel, and how (I love this) that Dale is frozen in time like Pompeii, that no-one has been there until the dwarves come through, and how they were going to use the now-broken carousel showing the heartbreak of this once lovely and prosperous and happy Dale. (I love carousels so this hits me hard.) *Chills*. And then to see Thranduil walk past *more chills*. BTW that is a great .gif link!

In that, Thranduil wouldn't walk TO anyone . You walk TO him, and while I guess it might be polite to make a path for Bard, I also took it as an unspoken threat - the flawless synchronous turn, the thud of the bows. E.g., for any visitor, to try to attack or threaten Thranduil is a very bad mistake. Somehow this sounds like Thranduil. But I am glad you posted, because I thought what a lot of folks thought, that this was Bard's army, which to me even if he shot down a dragon, didn't ring true with me. I just couldn't imagine Thranduil handing over a huge army to Bard, just like that. And I think as a king, and and an experienced warrior, Thranduil for the most part is going to want to be in charge of his elves. But now you have my mind racing, because this makes so much more sense to me. The simple-living Bard thrown into a leadership position, and now this Elven High King has arrived and wants to talk to the de facto leader of Laketown (and probably already knows that Bard took down Smaug). I think this will play into what seems to be an "everyman" hero theme that is going on (based on Bard's pleading expression with Thorin, e.g. there's a guy who REALLY doesn't want to go war, at all). And Thranduil I think may not want to go to war either, but in the end will be ruthless if he has to be. LOL, I'm sorry to be evil, but until the orcs show up this seems to be shaping into one of the most reluctant wars in the history of cinema as PJ depicts it . Except for my beloved Thorin, who while if anyone asked him probably doesn't want to go to war, but is too far gone to have anything but an up-yours attitude. Nice observations Eruvandi! Especially re the facial expressions.

Not humoring you at all! Wrong choice of phrase... I forget to put on the self-deprecation filter sometimes and just grab the first thing that pops up. I mean indulge. Re that blurb: I got to admit I didn't like the connotations of that when I read it. As in what? Is Leggy going to try federated state/autonomous region thing with daddy?
but this is from LAST YEAR and who knows what PJ is gonna do. Far as I know only Thranduil could permit the elves to help the Laketowners. Anyway, I wouldn't call these dynamics a RIVALRY. Gotta admit, the thoughts of a love triangle re Tauriel (hadn't known about her role at that point) and the royal duo ran through my mind, which was just ewwww for all practical reasons and intent where I was concerned. So glad it's not that. Though OB's words still remain intriguing. Strange!

Yay Eruvandi's back! And agreed! No Elven phalanx at Bard's command

Nice post!!! Very good anaylsis. And I'm with you. I don't get why the general assumption is Bard commands the phalanx or indeed salute for Bard. What he did may be a feat but hey these are Mirkwood's finest here. They LIVE and die by the bow, successfully, and for far longer than Bard could ever do.
Surely Bard walking to meet Thranduil. Thranduil wouldn't stoop to being the one to walk to Bard.

All that, Avandel. And hey, surprise surprise we're in agreement
Well, it was truly a reluctant war, at least on Thranduil's part, until the orcs crashed the party. Thorin's all just about what new crown he can dig up from the hoard at this point to go with his new rags.

Also, that adorkable blush when he says meeting CB was the highlight of his experience! I think it was a great idea to partner these two. Though it is a pity they didn't meet until that day. But well, at least we know now PJ's not messing with the dynamics of that particular relationship. Agreed! But he does have the physique for a superman costume I do think if I were in her shoes and my faculties didn't evaporate, I'd say that too. Just that chest rip was worth it
