You're welcome and listen to Avandel re GIMP

I'm tippy-toe dipping but it's started an itch for more Way more fun than powerpoint. Though I've never managed to get a grip on other PS sw... the hideous MS default Paint for example. If, no, when you do install GIMP, 1 quirk in the process I noticed. The help/manual is a separate install unless you want to always refer to it online. There's no prompt but you will need to restart the 'puter for it to take. Silly me installed it X times without being able to open the help, closed it in a huff, and that fateful day I decided to try my maiden gimpy, it opened on cue like a flower

... and the Elvenking's downfall? His pointy ears! Same for OB vs Legolas! Tis obviously a conceitful device of Man, unable to cope with the aesthetical truth of Elvendom But it sure got the analysis right just looking at the mortals Quote Lee Pace = 9.11 / 10 Thranduil = 8.32 / 10 Orlando Bloom = 8.69 / 10 Legolas = 7.36 (source) I'm a lurker. [In reply to]

Hmm - gotta look at the manual, *arrogantly* since I knew some PS have just bulldozed my way through Gimping. I might try to put up an ad hoc Gimp tips page in the OT section - not that I am some expert, but I'll look at the manual and try to come up w. some quickie tips that might be less boring - hope. If I have time. Also don't want to sound patronizing when telling folks stuff - but anyway: most of the time, if you are cutting stuff out, it helps to set the feathering to 1-2 pixels. Maybe more in some cases. Especially w. low-res web stuff, w. the finished image the mind blurs pixels so you look like you have a nice smooth edge. Feathering is your friend. Gets rid of that "ghosting" you see in jagged web images. Also when cutting out stuff, the "magic wand" tool is great, as it selects similar color pixels and you can adjust the closeness of the pixel colors it selects - the tolerance - I usually have this set at 32, and adjust closer or coarser as needed. Click anti-alias "ON". Sometimes - like w. the swords I used in the quickie poster - it helps to increase the contrast a bit, so the magic wand and other tools can "see" the different color pixels. E.g, whitish swords on a white background, the program can't tell the difference. And sometimes you can draw in a faint grey line or add something to the image you want, to separate the colors - e.g. like draw a dark line along the sword. That way you can click in the white background, and the magic wand will only pick up the white. Then either clear the background to transparent, or invert selection and copy or cut this now-free-floating sword to the next image as a new layer.

The trailer is so neat! Any idea where he is? He seems to be all alone as he battles the orcs. It is intriging, why is he not with Legolas, Tauriel and his army? Oh, so many questions ........ only 4 1/2 months to go, geez! The structures in the background, IMO look identical in style to what we've seen of Dale so far. It seems like a lot of the fighting will happen in and around the ruined city. As far as where Legolas, Tauriel and the army are, it could be that they're there and we just can't see them in this shot. Or maybe the fighting has gotten so widespread that individuals are having to split up to "take care of business". Anyway, Thranduil seems highly capable of taking care of himself.

Well, I like his solo/small group ventures better anyway, not that I don't have love for the cast and crew. Interviewers tend to forget him when there's an ensemble. Doesn't help that he seems to like to blend in, make himself small and just smile quietly. I can understand that. I'm the blend-into-the-background-smile-and-nod type too and I generally find being quiet and listening to others more comfortable that jumping in with my own comments. Of course, sometimes I'm a little too quiet and accidentally sneak up on people and startle them. I accidentally startle my mom all the time and I once even startled a woman in a public restroom just by quietly standing there waiting for my mom. Seriously, this woman walked in, put her purse and book on the sink, turned around and gasped because she didn't realize I was there. I guess I was standing in just the right spot that she didn't see me when she came in and couldn't see me in the mirror too. She laughed and said, "I'm sorry, I didn't see you there!" and moved on. I noticed that the book she had put on the sink was an Agatha Christie novel which could explain why she was so jumpy!
Agreed! I was surprised only Dwalin was present. Like I said elsewhere, he should have put on his knuckle-dusters, and mark Dwarven attendance and take names I guess after most of the dwarves made it to FantasyCon, their schedules must have filled back up. Busy, busy dwarves. That reminds me, did any of y'all see this pic? The captions people came up with were pretty funny!
ETA: by the Valar! Me Gondor! When did that happen? More - You Tol Eressea! Wow! *bows* Welcome to Gondor! It's very nice here (scenic views, cute not-crazy stewards and all that) but I feel like I've been here for forever and I'm still 66 posts away from busting out and going to the Grey Havens.

*Grins* 'Coz you be a Gimper. True enough, there are images that may not be the right size, and this is always a problem. But then you can be arty. So: 1. Figure out what size and res you need - for wallpaper I suspect it'll be 1200 x 800 and 72 dpi, or something like that. Now go make a new file in Gimp - you can make the file and image size to whatever you like. There won't be anything there of course. Notice in the toolbar your squares of foreground and background colors. I like to fill a blank image w. black. 2. Now find some Thranduil images. 3. Open these up, select all re each image, copy and paste each image into your black image - stack those layers up. Use the scaling tool in the toolbar to size individual layers. Use the move tool to move stuff around. 4. Move everything around until you have a pretty collage. Add some text if you like...... 5. Flatten the whole thing and export as .bmp, .png, .jpg. I might do a quick how-to in the OT section, for fun. Tho it'll probably have the Thorinitis influence....

A lot of it Tolkien wrote near the end of his life. He would have these insights, for instance, while sitting at the dinner table, he would grab napkins and begin writing details about Elfs or Dwarfs or Numenoreans, and not just a few sentences either, very long detailed notes. Oh, it is so, so interesting. It fascinates me that he was still writing (and doing some of his most interesting writing) while practically on his deathbed, Middle Earth never really left him. Yea!
Please, call me Ve.

Did you read the details? Thranduil actually outscored LP on one aspect, equalled him in 2, and lost in the ear stakes only. How can that put LP so far ahead? Truly, the treachery of Man knows no bounds *no accounting for sense of aesthetics*.
