Kim just posted the link for the screen caps of the iPod version of the new Empire article: here This is what it says about Thrandy:
On the screen, the dwarves huddle beneath the recently reinforced battlements of Erebor, and (in the reverse) Thranduil and Bard ride to within hollering distance. The footage is relatively raw, with large portions of greenscreen. Lee Pace's horse has not yet been converted into Thranduil's elk. "We've come to tell you payment of your debt has been offered… and accepted." oozes Pace onscreen. "Thranduil's going to be very interested in Thorin's reaction," Jackson explains, effectively giving Empire a sneak preview of the director's commentary as Olsen runs through the takes. "He's trying to avoid war, so it is quite a big moment… Oh, that's good, I like that one." Pace has just given a particularly flinty line-reading, and you can see how it energises the director - the tiniest piece of the puzzle slotting into place. [cut] Olsen offers up another take of Thranduil, but Jackson is not as impressed. "Hmm, I just don't know how we're going to use it," he mulls "Chuck it in, we'll see if it becomes clear later on how we'd use it."

From UT, Galadriel and Celeborn: ... it is said that when a thousand years of the Third Age had passed and the Shadow fell upon Greenwood the Great, the Silvan Elves ruled by Thranduil retreated before it as it spread ever northward until at last Thranduil established his realm in the north-east of the forest and delved there a fortress and great halls underground. Oropher was of Sindarin origin, and no doubt Thranduil his son was following the example of King Thingol, though his halls were not to be compared with Menegoth. He had not the arts nor the wealth nor the aid of the Dwarves; and compared with the Elves of Doriath his Silvan folk were rude and rustic. Oropher had come among them with only a handful of Sindar, and they were soon merged with the Silvan Elves, adopting their language and taking names of Silvan form and style. This they did deliberately; for they (and other similar adventurers forgotten in the legends or only briefly named) came from Doriath after its ruin, and had no desire to leave Middle-earth nor to be merged with the other Sindar of Beleriand, dominated by the Noldorin Exiles for whom the folk of Doriath had no great love. They wished indeed to become Silvan folk and to return as they said, to the simple life natural to the Elves before the invitation of the Valar had disturbed it. ... Galadriel, assisted in this by her friendship with the Dwarves of Moria, had come into contact with the Nandorin realm on Lorinand on the other side of the Misty Mountains. This was peopled by those Elves who forsook the Great Journey of the Eldar from Cuivienen and settled in the woods of the Vale of Anduin and it extended into the forests on both sides of the Great River, including the region where afterwards was Dol Guldor. These Elves had no princes or rulers, and led their lives free of care while all Morgoth's power was concentrated in the North-west of Middle Earth, but many Sindar and Noldor came to dwell among them, and their "Sindarizing" under the impact of Beleriandic culture began. (It is not made clear when this movement into Lorinand took place; it may be that they came from Eregion by way of Khazad-dum and under the auspices of Galadriel.) This seems to be a common theme, the Silvan Elves were living the lifestyle everyone wanted to live, peaceful, far removed from the kinslayings etc., and hidden away from Morgoth. The more I read of the Silvan Elves, the more I like them. I am also partial to the Sindarian Elves for obvious reasons. More later.
Please, call me Ve.

That is, indeed, a very interesting tidbit! It's sounding like negotiations between the dwarves and the elves/men are going to happen similarly to how they happened in the book. Bilbo will deliver the Arkenstone (I'm assuming that's the "payment") and then Dain will arrive right when he's supposed to. Sounds like Bubba the War Elk is making a reappearance too. I know some people think ol' Bubba is OTT, but I think he's cute and suits Thranduil's personality quite well. I just really hope we'll get to see some good Thranduil/Bilbo interaction at some point, because I love how they contrast each other. Preferably it will happen when Bilbo delivers the Arkenstone. In the book, Bilbo took the Arkenstone, sneaked out of the mountain at night (with the Ring on for invisibility's sake, IIRC), and when he tries to cross the river/stream to get to the camps of the elves and men, he falls in and gets caught by some elven look-outs. I have a sneaking suspicion, from that one vlog where we see Bilbo, Gandalf, Legolas, and Tauriel all together that Legolas and Tauriel will be the elven look-outs in the movie, and may also be the elves that escort him part of the way back to the mountain after the Arkenstone is handed over. That makes me think of something that isn't particularly relevant to the movie, but it's something I've always wondered about: I'm sure that as old as Thranduil is, he's seen or at least heard about hobbits, but what about Legolas and Tauriel. We still don't know how old Leggy is, but we know that Tauriel is only about 600 years old, which is quite young for an elf. Have either of them even seen a hobbit before? If they haven't, what will they think of Bilbo and, most importantly, will they think he's as cute and huggable as I think he is?

I haven't read any UT, but am currently getting to grips with the beginning of the Sil, so this compacted history containing Elven characters that I DO know is proving valuable to me. I am looking forward to becoming more familiar with the Elven races. The Silvans sound like my type as well.

Welcome to Thranduil's Appreciation Central That is an interesting bitsie. So Thranduil will be more involved in negotiations with Thorin than in the book. I can live with it, more Thranduil is always welcome And war-elk!
Pace has just given a particularly flinty line-reading, and you can see how it energises the director Just HEART this. What I wouldn't give to be a fly in that room. ETA:
"...the negotiations between Thranduil and Thorin...conclude abruptly with Dain's 'calvary' emerging on the adjacent hilltop." SQUEE!!! More Thranduil and Thorin moments! So Dain will be riding on a pig. Really looking forward to him going up against Thranduil on Bubba!

Book spoiler space... ... adding space in case of accidental reading of something you prefer not to know.
And I wonder if their coming interaction with this particular hobbit will sway the decision in 60 years time to send Legolas to Rivendell, when they hear word of another particular hobbit. Leggy was sent to Rivendell to report Gollum's escape so Thranduil would prolly only hear about Frodo when he receives Leggy's note he won't be home for dinner.

So in the analysis 42. Thranduil Warrior King.
Sarumann: Battle Thranduil! I have a strong feeling that Lee Pace will pull off graceful and badass unlike any Elf actor we’ve seen so far! Aragorn the Elfstone: We definitely need more of this guy. Dear The Desolation of Smaug Extended Edition: please rectify. YES please!

By all that you hold SQUEE on that miserable Mountain, I bid you *MWOAR, Thrall of the dyscopically-disagreeable-dwarf* *Grins*. So hopelessly enthralled . The swirling forces of dark beauty and light, too much for my feeble brain cells to hold. Only the enthralled would need to turn the fan up at noticing re the screen caps - which I can study in detail thanks to the HOD site - the BITE to Thorin's perfect flawless teeth and the almost mocking up-yours blazing eyes . Oh, baby *cough* better take that conversation off-line too... Except then there's Thranduil . I can predict a future in which, one day, I will have to replace my remote, because the buttons wore out from clicking through Thranduil's twin-sword scenes, frame by frame. I want sloooooo-mooooooo . It's not my fault . Any time you are trolling through images - well SOME images in that a lot of the pics of Leona H. are some of the most terrifying things I've ever seen - with some images, especially in high-res, you just get lost, LOL And hilariously, I did notice to the left of Gandalf in the original, the girl next to him is smiling and laughing - guess it's tough to keep all those extras PAYING ATTENTION

But, I am so not computer savvy. I have tried linking, copying from other sites, etc. it just has not worked out (though I can copy from TORn to TORn, a minor miracle). I do not know if it is me or this library computer, and on this library computer there are time constraints and I feel like I am always in a rush. When I have my own computer again I am going to sit down with it and learn how to use the darn thing. There are a few more historical references I may have to type out because they are so fascinating and so relevant to these Hobbit movies. But one day ....... Thanks though!

Let's talk about your new hedgehog and what a bored animal can do to an orchid collection *Grins* inspired by a certain real-life kitty who keeps eating the daylily leaves. Like there isn't plenty of nice grass around to chomp on. Or the times when an indoor plant is just in the way and is chucked to the floor by said graceful animal. Tho in my modest efforts, my respect for the Peckish Owl has grown exponentially, w. the amount of work required, and her level of effort . But *sigh* with the last movie it, I suspect, I may not feel like messing about, and certainly there are some images already re lines I won't cross - just don't feel comfortable. And I won't want to. Ah, Thorin . A bit OT here but I did notice - and it's subtle - outside of the obvious crown and clothes, it seems to me RA is even carrying himself differently, tho perhaps I am projecting. But re BOFA it just seems like here is very much of a feel of a "king that has come into his own" even physically. What an actor too, every nuance of Thorin carried through frame by frame. Of course I have to geek out about the clothes, but while the costume designer talked about the "deceptive simplicity" of the line of Thorin's clothing, I hafta think in the end, RA's height and frame were a huge advantage in being able to carry off the wide shoulders of the fur, and the bulk of dwarf gear, without turning what was supposed to be a majestic figure into just a ball of cloth and fur and leather. I hafta go back through this thread and read in depth! It's thanks to you and other posters a whole world has opened up for me to explore, that I was aware of but did not know what I had been missing. Already - tho for me lost my heart to the movie Thorin - thanks to movie Thranduil and learning about the Sil I appreciate Tolkien's elves in a way I never did. Lastly *sigh* final episode of the season for Halt and Catch Fire this weekend

If they haven't, what will they think of Bilbo and, most importantly, will they think he's as cute and huggable as I think he is? Nice thought! And just MAYBE Bilbo will feel a 'wee bit better because at least he's overheard Tauriel speaking - and Bilbo in following the captured dwarves has seen both Legolas and Tauriel - and just MAYBE he knows they are not the kind of elves who will just shoot on sight. Not that they are not dangerous, but at least he would know they are not hair-trigger, even after what Beorn said about the Mirkwood elves. I often wonder what LP's Thranduil will make of this Hobbit. But I am also fretting already - uselessly - because of the Empire article when both Bard and Thranduil approach Erebor. Is that canon? Because maddened or not, I often think Bard might have stood some sort of chance, maybe even on the side w. Balin or the Heirs, if only, if only, he had used a soft approach. I can't think of anything worse he could have done than show up side by side with Thranduil, tho maybe he didn't know the back history. And *sigh* I can't think of anything worse Bilbo could have done, than put the stone in the hands of Thranduil - in the book for be there was a lot more distance, but even then I was uncomfortable. But maybe in the film Bilbo tries to deal with Bard, but yah know Thranduil is a king and has the well-equipped army and just ends up dominating. Because he is a king. And now I wonder will Bilbo mention that, and just be ignored?

All that dark chocolate fur on his new coat is definitely made for snuggles! Squeeeeee! Oh, yes - and working with the high-res images off HOD site I was once again struck by the depth and beauty of RA's eyes, the luminous skin - *THUD*. I swear the man was born for close-ups.!!! Glad you found your way to this thread, it is getting moved farther back - but these TA threads are always interesting and a great time - and of course, dwarves go where they like PS. And no matter what, LOVE Thorin's fire. It's not logical of me, but sometimes I think (as tho this were all real LOL) what were they THINKING, what was Bilbo THINKING, to challenge DWARVES and Thorin, of all of them. The dwarf who would charge a 7-foot orc, and Bilbo knew all that!
