And also apart from that, a rather good interview with The Man himself:

Great - thanks. [In reply to] Can't Post

"It’s easy to be cynical, but I am so charmed by these Comic-Con people and how the proceedings bring out the child versions of themselves. Total lack of cynicism. "

This is a good quote by the interviewer, though. Modern movie-boards are full of extreme cynicism.

"I am afraid it is only too likely to be true what you say about the critics and the public. I am dreading the publication for it will be impossible not to mind what is said. I have exposed my heart to be shot at." J.R.R. Tolkien

We all have our hearts and minds one way or another invested in these books and movies. So we all mind and should show the necessary respect.

But once I was back in, it was a blast. This was the most fun I ever had making a film.

SO much for PJ not being "all-in", as some claim.

Disturbing comment by PJ [In reply to] Can't Post

" We don’t introduce any new characters. We don’t go anywhere. There’s no traveling. The dwarves and everyone else got to where they need to be, last time and everybody’s been introduced."

I hope this is not true. Dain is a pretty big character who has not been introduced to us yet.
If PJ ends up having him be a non-talking king who shows up and just acts as Thorin's puppet, I'm gonna be a very angry dwarf.

Nice interview [In reply to] Can't Post

I shall be a consistent attendee at the showings of Sir Peter's future films (bring on The Damn Busters; bring on the Kiwi-centric features)

A thoughtful and likeable quote from the interview:

Quote
The memories are things that will never go away and they are part of your organic upbringings, they’re implanted. And film geeks like me and you, and the people here, we are all the product of the movies we saw.

Somewhat poignant, aint it? Smile

Go get 'em, PJ.Wink

I guess... [In reply to] Can't Post

... if he was - in another universe - asked to do, say, "The Children of Hurin" he would certainly have a hard time not doing it.

It could have a very different feeling from LotR and TH... although initially many people would say "He is doing the whole thing again" I am sure this kind of story would blow away a lot of people... even some lovers of LotR and TH (books) have no idea how gritty, dark and different some stories of the Sil are.

One day... maybe not in my liftime... :

"The War of the Jewels" Trilogy

Part I - The Lay of Beren and Lúthien
Part II - The Children of Húrin
Part III - The War of Wrath

To play a character if he isn't going to have a significant role. Don't worry, PJ was just generalizing I believe.

I always pictured like that and I cant believe the large amount of naysayers that... [In reply to] Can't Post

Can think something as simple as this, a series of movies dividing the Sil in such wonderfull and standalone sotries like those you pointed. That would be awesome, even if you only make those 3 and leave all Numenor stuff behind.

And they would after all the WWI movies PJ ever wanted to make, imagin that, and then when Morgoth is sent away ME would going back to the fairy tale tone that has in AUJ

What do ya think?

Really hoping for more Mirkwood and the Woodland Realm... and more Thranduil! (which I'll repeat ad nausem even if I'm not his thrall, because the character was just portrayed so wellHeart)

Yes... [In reply to] Can't Post

I was trying to think how long each addition might be.

Beorn - 5 minutes?
River / Stag - 5 minutes?
Company in Dale - 3 minutes?
Thranduil/Company - 3 minutes?
Feast of Starlight - 2 minutes?
Thrain??? Still no idea how he could be included and still make sense of that plotline in Bot5A.

Re: Dain. Hmm... [In reply to] Can't Post

the feasible point is maybe in the prologue I think, just in the convo between Gandalf and Thorin. Anywhere else would seem too disjointed. If he's to be mentioned before BotFA that is.

Great to hear! [In reply to] Can't Post

If I recall, FOTR had around 25 minutes of extended footage put in, and that was enough for me! This seems substantial enough. AUJ's extended edition was great and loved the added scenes, but really wasn't much new stuff, with Rivendell being the only extended scene. I hope a lot of the new stuff is spread out throughout the film, and not just put in at the beginning (like we'll only get extended Beorn and Mirkwood). Can't wait for this!!

And great interview as well. Was also wondering about LOTR being converted to 3D and be rereleased. I hope this happens sometime soon, even though PJ doesn't think so. Would love to revisit theaters and see LOTR again, and it'll add more Middle-earth to the big screen! I think WB will do something with Middle-earth in film. It's too much of a money maker to just let die after BOTFA. We won't get the Sil, but maybe some spin offs like the War in the North or maybe set on some new characters during the Third Age?

Might as well give you folks the scoop [In reply to] Can't Post

So as TDOS has been out for a while I thought I'd share some scenes I was told about that weren't in the movie;

- More of the dwarves hiding in Laketown. One scene with them filming in a tavern, hiding under a table.

- Braga confronts Bard, who snags some underwar and jokingly tells Braga something along the lines of "These look just like the ones your wife wear." (my source couldn't quite remember the specific line)

- Bilbo defending Thorin during their talk outside the townhouse with the Master and Bard.

- The Laketowners providing the company with food and clothes.

- The company leaving through the main gate of Laketown.

There's no guarantee any of these scenes will be included in the extended edition, but at least they were filmed.

Really don't want/can't imagine a reboot [In reply to] Can't Post

This adaption of LOTR/Hobbit is somewhat the definitive adaption, and I can't imagine WB/any director wanting to reboot it any time soon. These films are already perfect. Can you imagine any other composers' score outshining Howard Shore's? Can you imagine a much more perfect ending to the FOTR than what we got? It'll be hard to top, and I don't think it'll be done in the foreseeable future. Just keep expanding this Middle-earth we already have on film, again, with spin offs and such. Middle-earth is so huge, they don't need to be confined to only the works of JRR, and instead could do a spin off film set in the Third Age on new characters during the War of the Ring, like a Dunedain ranger or something.
