From Howe's homepage: "Thranduil, King of the Woodland Realm, watching a troupe of dwarven merchants making their way through Greenwood." (http://www.john-howe.com/...ls.php?image_id=6013) Note the use of the name Greenwood - just as you mentioned in your first post!

Geeky analysis of the T&T scene... Aaaand an easier option for movie dialogue
[In reply to]

The scripts for both TH movies are online here, courtesy of the LotR Project. From there, the translation for that Thorin Dwarvish line as Thranduil does that perfect subtle sneer before he swooshed into the insolent Dwarf's face is "Imrid amrad ursul! [Rough translation: Die a death of flames!]" Thanks for the pics! (is the EE here yet?? ) *stares at Pretty!* hmmm, right, on with the analysis!
1. Thorin says “we came to you once, seeking your help”. The prologue suggests that Thranduil and his riders were out and about, and in the right place at the wrong time. Spotted by Thorin during the evacuation, would that be the point at which he spontaneously requested TH’s help, or would it be more pre-meditated, in that Thorin and his people either turned up to Mirkwood or sent messengers requesting help? I think the latter. "We came to you once" suggests an active request, not a happenstance (OT: What the hell is Thranduil doing, trampling to Erebor with such a large armed entourage but is himself not in armour? Did he intend to menace Thror into handing over them white gems?). [Spoiler start] Now that I think about it, I wonder if they're trying to setup some resonance with the help request Bard's gonna send post-Smaug? [Spoiler end]
2. Harking back to recent discussion on facial scar – it really looks like Thranduil is summoning it forth and that it’s painful to do so. The ominous crack of thunder sure adds accent to the pain and effort. Looks like one to me, so why can't it be a memory? I still don't buy the conceit thing
3. “I warned your grandfather of what his greed would summon..” Wondering if this little chat took place before, during or after Thror refused him the gems. I think it may be all three, though not all instances in person. Somewhere in Erebor, if it hasn't been burnt by Smaug or the silverfish hasn't gotten to them, there may be a pile of letters, probably crumpled and in Thror's wastebasket, featuring an elegant Elven script, with words so sharp they would bleed the paper if it could feel them. Oh to get one of those precious letters- Thranduil's personal autograph!
4. Of the two main definitions of ‘prosaic’- one being ‘unimaginative, dull, mundane’ and so on, I think TH would be using the second, ‘commonplace, every day, ordinary’. Attempting to burgle a site like Erebor would be anything but mundane. The snark quotient in this line is through the roof. Plus the way he says "prosaic" Just And I believe it's double-entendred in itself. Then he has to follow that with his almost snarl as he said "burglary". Another thudderous priceless bit! Talk about twist of smoke and keeping himself in check.
5."I am listening" suggests Thorin is open to negotiations. At least it does to me, in, I suppose, modern usage. Did Thranduil's following line blow this out of the water, or was Thorin preparing to spit the dummy all along? I read it as Thorin preparing to spit the dummy (OT: Nice phrase!) regardless. And he might already have an inkling of what the help entailed and was merely stringing Thranduil along for the spit, knowing how much those gems meant to him, especially if he's read any of that basketful of letters
You are just like him. Stay here if you will, and rot. A hundred years is a mere blink in the life of an elf. I’m patient. I can wait. There's got be some missing lines in here. Especially before he tells Thorin to rot. EE now!

Oh, I don't know. Of course for House of Durin thralls we may be less enthused about a trailer and have a mix of feelings. Also for me it is way too soon as the movie is SO far away - sometimes I wonder if I'm not more excited about the EE with all that lovely missing footage. Yeah, for all the reasons above. I think it's probably a teaser, not a trailer, and that's why I think they may be stingy and not show us anything terribly new... well, for fans who've followed the vlogs anyway.
But, re the trailer, since I assume it's not going to reveal much - can't get the picture out of my head of something brooding and ominous, that really doesn't show much though. Perhaps of series of "darkened silhouette" type images of the main characters looking appropriately grim - which would include Thranduil of course and his lovely profile. Yes! Though I wager it's teaser now, trailer later, prolly in July at Comic-con? Something along the lines of the treatment for RotK (teaser - 1.33min, trailer - 2.56min). Interestingly, the DOS teaser ("Where does your journey end?" <- this better be in the EE) was 2.08mins and the trailer 2.23mins (too buch Legolas and Tauriel ). hmm not much of a diff there in terms of length but content seems more revealing? Though they're really stingy with showing anything much of Thranduil at all, except for the sumptiously generous voice-over for the trailer ... nevermind me, I'm going all on teaser/trailer now
just sayin' (again) that PJ & co. (and WB) would be very foolish not to make heavy use of Thranduil, who (justifiably) attracted so much attention with relatively little screen time. As far as I can tell, everyone wants more Thranduil (and Beorn). Right on! I don't get it. With LotR they already have the prior experience of the Elf!fandom thanks to Legolas. (And dare I mention Figwit?) They were pretty quick to exploit the squee and use Legolas in the promos more at least. And he was well, more or less eye-candy only (sorry Legolas). And here we've got his Daddy, who is premium eye-candy for sure, and yet also so much more. His appeal extends much beyond the fangirl squee Legolas managed. And yet, people have to repeatedly say there's not enough of him? Did the production simply fail to see the potential of the Thranduil effect from the costume fittings, and the rehearsals? Where's the acumen that put Legolas as front and centre as you could possibly go without changing the story to Fellowship of the Elf-squee in LotR? I also the first reveal of Thranduil was almost accidental and not a proper reveal usually accorded to important characters? As in the LP Thranduil appearing in a children's colouring book that was a movie tie-in?
And Elf-King in wrath, one of the greatest of ME's warriors finally aroused from his isolationist position - I just drool at the prospect of the visuals of that. & (I've always though that Thorin was as though a favorite image from one of my mythology books had walked off the pages into reality, and seeing the Woodland King ride to battle would be that as well, for me.) *SIGH* ... yes, I want all that! Thranduil in his menacing glory, riding into the battleground of this scrimmage (Can we even hope for a lookback to the Battle of Dagorlad?), strutting his warrior cool, and those gorgeous swords!!! Avandel, can I say again how I love your equal-opportunity fangirling, even though there is no doubt where your allegiance lie?

Without the confirmation I was thinking it was Thranduil going on an outing near the Old Forest Road the Dwarves used while Oropher ruled. He doesn't seem dressed for work, and the falcon suggests a hunting excursion on his own? With the confirmation that it's Thranduil the King in Greenwood, then it's got to be before Dol Guldur, circa 1100-1150 TA(?). Interesting and lovely milieu nonetheless. @Eruvandi - too early for Thorin's time for sure. He would not have been born yet.

Just because - LOL if a "Thorin Thrall" is lurking around a Thranduil appreciation thread, maybe some gifts will deflect the ire of the "ill-tempered" Woodland King? Not that these are John Howe, but I thought some of the better ones. The trouble with hunting up Thranduil art and images is there just aren't enough . One can only imagine what will be drawn from the expected trailer.
Love, love, love that PJ & co. - and Lee Pace himself - have tied this character back to the myths and folklore; love the tie-back to Cernunnos http://www.lugodoc.demon.co.uk/CERNUNOS.HTM "Cernunnos the Stag Lord: Cernunnos was worshipped by the iron age Celts all across Europe as late as the first century AD, and his worship must have begun centuries before that. Cernunnos is nearly always portrayed with animals, in particular the stag. He is also frequently associated with a unique beast that seems to belong only to him: a serpent with the horns of a ram. Less often he is associated with other beasts, including bulls, dogs and rats. The ram-horned serpent is particularly interesting. The serpent occurs in myths all across the world, and is nearly always associated with knowledge. Usually these associations are purely pagan, but remember that it was a serpent that tempted Eve to eat from the tree of knowledge. It is also commonly associated with death and the otherworld, and is hence described as cthonic. Cernunnos carries it in his left hand, and in his right he carries a torc, the Celtic symbol of nobility, the symbol of having been initiated into that special state " The Song of Amergin I am a stag of seven tines, I am a wide flood on a plain, I am a wind on the deep waters, I am a shining tear of the sun, I am a hawk on a cliff, I am fair among flowers, I am a god who sets the head afire with smoke. I am a battle waging spear, I am a salmon in the pool, I am a hill of poetry, I am a ruthless boar, I am a threatening noise of the sea, I am a wave of the sea, Who but I knows the secrets of the unhewn dolmen ? Origin obscure but certainly Celtic Because of his frequent association with beasts he is often referred to as The Lord of the Animals. Because of his association with stags in particular (a particularly hunted beast) he is also known as The Lord of the Hunt.
A painting that fades to white - hmmm, if BOFA really is fought in snow, what will Thranduil look like, whitefire hair, silver armor, cloak swirling all around?
And since this is a Thranduil appreciation thread, this is just because:
and LOL, because I am a "Thorin Thrall" and thought this was cute (and it IS art. And now we know that Thorin wasn't looking in wonder at Thranduil's scar or magic, but thinking about a plate of ribs):

"Avandel, can I say again how I love your equal-opportunity fangirling, even though there is no doubt where your allegiance lie?" *grins* I thank you *bows* for your welcome - it's a terrible thing, really. Of course by AUJ I knew what Thorin looked like, but getting blown away by an image isn't the same thing as sitting innocently in a theater, and then this happens to me:
Thorinitis, in its most rabid and virulent form. Utter thralldom, and knowing that not only will I need boxes and boxes of tissues, but some of that stuff you use when you've rubbed your skin raw from crying, and probably a whole lot of aspirin. Still, throughout it's not that I haven't appreciated the beauty of PJ's Middle Earth, a performance that is Martin Freeman's Bilbo, all the rest of the dwarves including fine performances by all especially the wonderful Ken Stott, how Gandalf is still Gandalf, even through the Thorin fog. And after all, did not RA say he when he met the dwarf cast something to the effect that "he gets his character from them?" E.g. the other cast feeds back into the creation of the characters around each other - note Sir Ian's distress at having to act "green screen". Wow, when I think about that, how good the actor playing Thranduil NEEDED to be. Because in this film version, and according to RA, this was the moment Thorin got to vent much of the rage he had carried for so long. And yet Thranduil comes back at him strongly, setting up the pieces of the tension of the different experiences and perceptions of different peoples that will carry into the third movie. Who is right? Who is wrong? Besides, like RA saying Thorin's voice needed to be able to command an army, the Woodland King needed to be absolutely believable as an ancient, ageless Woodland King, and having succeeded so beautifully with this actor, there's no way I'm not going to appreciate a vision and performance that brings to life an image from my books and mind. PJ did right in the first trailer, to let Thranduil do the overvoice, that line "Where does your journey end?" that set the tone of the growing darkness of these films so beautifully. So open-ended. So ominous. And I'm still sulking that that line didn't show up in the actual film *sigh*. Re: Right on! I don't get it. With LotR they already have the prior experience of the Elf!fandom thanks to Legolas. (And dare I mention Figwit?) Where's the acumen that put Legolas as front and centre as you could possibly go without changing the story to Fellowship of the Elf-squee in LotR? Well, cough - hmmm - to be honest, I'm not sure how much PJ & co. can guess - or maybe any movie producer/director etc. can predict what will capture people's imaginations. It's interesting - so, OK, RA is generally agreed to be very handsome, and certainly from the v-blogs they re-vamped Thorin until he ended up "sexy" - makeup artist Tami Lane's words, and not something RA would have thought himself as, I think. (Or appreciate, as he takes his work seriously). Nevertheless, it was Kili who was touted as the "hot dwarf" and so I think they expected a huge amount of attention to fall on him, comparisons of Thorin/Aragorn aside. Similarly - interestingly for me, I still think the inclusion of Legolas was something that PJ & co. thought would be very, very popular - and I guess it was popular as a recognizable character. But I think, honestly, the inclusion of Legolas was not the mind-blower that PJ & co. expected, whereas Thranduil seems to have quite seized the hearts and imaginations - you know, I still read posts here and there, who still find Thorin's "young" age a cardinal sin, and needs the beard etc., but I have yet to come across any post complaining in ANY way about Lee Pace's Thranduil. I'm sure they are out there, human nature being what it is, but they are probably not credible anyway IMO Point being - and I hope I am right - that as AUJ unfolded during filming and PJ & co. began to write for "Thorin's voice" I am quite hoping that the same happens for Thranduil. That things were already set for a lot of DOS re story flow, but during that production AND with the cries for "more Thranduil" and during the BOFA editing process, Thranduil will get a nice huge chunk of screen time. Because the people (as far as I can tell) have spoken (even me, a Thorin Thrall ). PS. Since I've managed to slip a Thorin image in a Thranduil appreciation thread , here's IMO another nice piece of art from one of my Deviant Art favorites - hadn't seen this before!

Decisions, decisions: To Erebor! Horse or Elk(?)
[In reply to]

I wonder if PJ will have Thranduil ride into battle on his giant elk or join his troops on a horse? A horse would make more sense maneuvering about the battle area and I understand LP is a very good rider (he mentioned it on the commentary of "The Fall"). I would love to observe his seat...his seat in the saddle...just sayin'... Horse is infinitely practical-ler (and makes less of a target for long-range weapons), but Elk is style and continuity, plus... Elf alliterates with Elk, or is it the other way round? The way Thranduil holds the reins of his Elk definitely speaks of personal riding style of an adept (like those sharpshooters who aim their guns with the gun grip horizontal rather than the conventional vertical position).
(Click on the pic to see the large-sized original) You think we might see a proper shoot'em up western/adventure in LP's filmography someday, you know just so we can have a proper showcase of his seat?

2 movies in and you're still as enthralled. So I think you're safely Thorinitised since you don't seem to display signs of shaking it when you thrall Thranduil with us here
PJ did right in the first trailer, to let Thranduil do the overvoice, that line "Where does your journey end?" that set the tone of the growing darkness of these films so beautifully. So open-ended. So ominous. And I'm still sulking that that line didn't show up in the actual film *sigh*. Yes. That and giving us the orc interrogation. Though based on that, I expected to have more of Thranduil in DOS, not have that be his last scene And there was not much else promo-wise, was there?
No, I didn't expect them to know for sure. Curvature distorting visions in the crystal ball and all. Just that, they've had the frenzy of Legolas!Squee rain down on them, so it seems poor project management/planning to not at least factor the potential of that scenario happening with THE Elf of this trilogy, especially when he is Legolas' daddy, and maybe plan for it. (OT: I first noticed RA as the german spy in Captain America, and rather thought he'd fit in a period film perfectly. Interesting that he was a dubious character there and a King in TH. Same with LP - first recognition of him was as Fernando Wood in Lincoln-a dubious character there and then, ba-bam! Elvenking in TH!)
I'm sure they are out there, human nature being what it is, but they are probably not credible anyway IMO Exactly. I think they miscalculated with the Legolas effect, which has been underwhelming... maybe it really is true that most of his fanbase have moved on. imo, giving Tauriel an expanded role didn't help his cause either, though she's actually better executed than Legolas [which is sad, even for this (diminished) Legolas Lass]. I think its testament to both Thranduil the character and LP's talent as an actor that despite being sidelined a little, he's, as you said, seized hearts and imaginations. I read a few Tolkienites' reviews, and even those who did not like the adaptation generally had good things to say about Thranduil and LP. I did read one scathing opinion by someone who called herself the expert on all things Thranduil - couldn't help but wonder if we read the same books and saw the same movies though (but she seemed to disapprove the lot of PJ's ruling Elves anyway), so there you go... human nature, what an inconvenient condition Hmm... Thorin definitely gives the vibe of being the TH Aragorn, with Kili sharing some of the load? To be honest, as a Longbeard, he does seem *cough* a little lacking where it counts (look at Gimli fcs), but I get why he ended up the way he is in TH. Its a heavy burden to bear, being the hearttrob of the trilogy, nevermind that he's an uncle to another.
Point being - and I hope I am right - that as AUJ unfolded during filming and PJ & co. began to write for "Thorin's voice" I am quite hoping that the same happens for Thranduil. & and speaking of *sexy* the man himself. One can ONLY hope with Thranduil's significance there will be lots and lots of Lee Pace interviews, with his smile, intelligence, and thoughtfulness.
Hear hear! There is always hope I guess. Though I have more faith in the EEs... the TEs may already be too far along to do much, especially considering the work they had to do with changing and moving stuff around when TH became a trilogy 6 months before the original finale aka TABA was to premiere.
PS. Since I've managed to slip a Thorin image in a Thranduil appreciation thread , here's IMO another nice piece of art from one of my Deviant Art favorites - hadn't seen this before! I this and the series... if I were in the US, I'd buy the merchandise too! And there's such a choice, covering most TH squeedoms

The scripts for both TH movies are online here, courtesy of the LotR Project. From there, the translation for that Thorin Dwarvish line as Thranduil does that perfect subtle sneer before he swooshed into the insolent Dwarf's face is "Imrid amrad ursul! [Rough translation: Die a death of flames!]" Well hey – can’t believe I didn’t know about that script site! Just as well I enjoy a bit of nerdy admin transcribing work. "Imrid amrad ursul!” Ah! It’s clearly obvious if one pays attention, that Thorin must be delivering some sort of dragon-related line, because of TH’s direct response. This passed me by (*sigh* so many things do!)
The snark quotient in this line is through the roof. Just (hearts) And I believe it's double-entendred in itself. Then he has to follow that with his almost snarl as he said "burglary". Another thudderous priceless bit! Talk about twist of smoke and keeping himself in check. I know, right?! It was hearing how he said ‘prosaic’ that made me refer to ‘delicious vocal nuances’. I also love, in his orc-beheading scene, how he says “There is nothing he could tell me.” As a radio copywriter, I just love picking up on awesome vocal work. Thorin’s voice also bowls me over. Voice is such a major part of acting, and the voices of ME are so strong and credible. (LOL - recently we had a female voiceover in the studio and I just wanted to say to her “could you please try to sound a little more like Cate Blanchett in the Prologue of FOTR?”) Wouldn’t it be great if LP decided to lend his voice to an audio book?! Tom Hiddleston has done one (The Red Necklace) which I, naturally, own.
I read it as Thorin preparing to spit the dummy (OT: Nice phrase!) Oh, is this phrase not widely known? LOL! Must be specifically antipodean in use. I could also use local phrases such as “chuck a tanty” or the more vulgar “crack the sh*ts”. Aussie slang dictionary : Spit the Dummy: To get uncontrollably [very] upset at someone or something.

Same with LP - first recognition of him was as Fernando Wood in Lincoln-a dubious character there and then, ba-bam! Elvenking in TH!) Thranduil was my first glimpse of Lee Pace ever. Yep, had never even seen Pushing Daisies. Or those final Twilight films.
I understand LP is a very good rider (he mentioned it on the commentary of "The Fall"). It just so happens I have ‘The Fall’ in my bag, ready to post back to Quickflix. This made me rip it back out of the envelope, to take home again. I can’t believe I forgot to watch it with commentary! (I may post my thought on The Fall at some stage soon.) Speaking of which - Lurker, remember that picture you posted in Thread III of LP in blue tracksuit top and woolly hat? I think I wondered it it were taken while hiking in NZ. But no, I have now found its source – go to The Fall IMDB page here http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460791/ and click on the 2nd video. LP talks about riding in this – he clearly enjoys it.

I know, right?! It was hearing how he said ‘prosaic’ that made me refer to ‘delicious vocal nuances’. I also love, in his orc-beheading scene, how he says “There is nothing he could tell me.” Delicious indeed. Re the orc-beheading scene: I think I am in love with everything he did in the scene. From his voice, particularly that little soliloquy to open the scene and the way he said " You have nothing to fear. Tell us what you know, and I will set you free" (so seductively assuring, so full of promise, but so empty), to his uber stillness when barking that order to Tauriel to stop, and when he beheaded the orc, physically he didn't seem to exert any effort at all, so otherworldly, so... Elvish
LOL - recently we had a female voiceover in the studio and I just wanted to say to her “could you please try to sound a little more like Cate Blanchett in the Prologue of FOTR?”
LOL! Her delivery in the prologue gave me chills the first time I was in the theatre. There was a time I could mouth the lines along with her too... how far have I fallen.
Wouldn’t it be great if LP decided to lend his voice to an audio book?! Tom Hiddleston has done one (The Red Necklace) which I, naturally, own. That's an idea for sure! I would so go out and buy it even if it's just a rendering of the periodic table and common chemical compounds of the world Incidentally, I see that Richard Armitage has a number of BBC documentary narrations to his name. As a nature programme and docu-nerd I'd love to hear LP narrating something for National Geographic or Discovery. There's been a few nice features - Jeremy Irons did one for a Lions programme, Josh Brolin did a whole series on the American wilderness (imagine that, a whole series of LP narration!)
Oh, is this phrase not widely known? LOL! Must be specifically antipodean in use. I could also use local phrases such as “chuck a tanty” or the more vulgar “crack the sh*ts”.
Nope. I looked it up and it definitely is antipodean. I love it though. The visual is just too... preciouss

"Truth is, I no longer dare to use Thorin and Thranduil as a search string when looking for stuff now... such a pity, because this is the type of art/humour I'd like to get more of." You mean 'coz of the "stuff" that shows up? Totally understand. There are times when I left my eyebrows, but I take the *majestic* or haughty tactic of pity - e.g. if you are silly enough to make graphic stuff and post online, don't think it won't ever get back to you - like the woman who had her fan fic read for laughs during some Sherlock event. Also *shrug* if that's what is going on in your head, - euuuuuw. Guess it finds an audience - another euuuuuuw. But there's some good stuff out there: Funny!
LOL!
And fans do a lot with a little:
And what I bet all Thranduil fans think:

Thranduil was my first glimpse of Lee Pace ever. Yep, had never even seen Pushing Daisies. Or those final Twilight films. If it helps, I have a tendency to notice actors (ok it helps when they look GOOD) in small roles, and then forget about the actors who impressed me (because they're not all over the place anyway), only to be slapped with a large trout by vague-ish memory when I see them in something else, which sends me scurrying to find info about the actor, and then things will start to stick properly. Even with LP, I had checked his filmography and knew he was Thranduil (I was passively keeping myself away from TH news to keep from being spoilt), so I was expecting a lot. Was suitably impressed with his look in AUJ (ok, much ) but I was reserving judgment since it was just the 2 headtilts then. But memory really isn't all that it's cut out to be, so I did a double-take and had to go look him up again after DOS to reconnect the dots... and that's how I ended up "lurking" here, and setting about finding his other work, and finished PD not too long ago.

You mean this one? Thanks for the headsup, but there seems to be only 1 vid on that page (or am I missing something - been looking through the page for a while now) and its the trailer (though it reaffirms the topic on the other post you did - LP has a great voice for narration!)

... before threadlock! Going by the previous threads, we should have another 2 weeks methinks, unless... trailer!
You mean 'coz of the "stuff" that shows up? Totally understand. There are times when I left my eyebrows, but I take the *majestic* or haughty tactic of pity - e.g. if you are silly enough to make graphic stuff and post online, don't think it won't ever get back to you - like the woman who had her fan fic read for laughs during some Sherlock event. Also *shrug* if that's what is going on in your head, - euuuuuw. Guess it finds an audience - another euuuuuuw. But there's some good stuff out there: HAHA, yes, "stuff". Using the two names together in an image search is a bad idea... well, depending on your take. The "stuff" doesn't faze as much as annoy, after the amusement wears off, just cos of the volume. It's the strangeness of feeling the urge to explain that I'm sifting THROUGH the "stuff" to get at stuff, not purveying the "stuff" per se when there's others around who can see the screen.
And what I bet all Thranduil fans think: Nope. Sorry to disappoint. Key verb missing there: "Should be"
