Edit: It was in the May issue: http://www.empireonline.com/magazine/299/ It also seems to "confirm" that almost the whole Train story will be EE only - at least if this is a recently given Q&A. I thought it might be shifted to Bot5A at some point (prologue or else)... but by now they probably decided what will go there and what will remain in DoS (EE, that is). Just cannot decode the last part of her statement on Thrain... "coming and going in a good way"? I always thought it possible that Thrain is the one freeing Gandalf to join the WC. However, how would the TE explain Thrain without EE knowledge? Always good to hear from PB! I also did really like Thranduil's scared face... it makes it much harder for Thorin to simply rage against the inactivity and unhelpfulness of the Elves, as he is (not so kindely) reminded by Thranduil what his people would probably have faced had they intervened. It makes the whole blaming and shaming much harder and more complex - for both sides.

I have exposed my heart to be shot at." J.R.R. Tolkien We all have our hearts and minds one way or another invested in these books and movies. So we all mind and should show the necessary respect.

We trawled the IMDB messageboards for the nerdiest questions about the second Hobbit film, then put them to co-writer Philippa Boyens... "What does Smaug eat? Since no-one has heard from Smaug in some time, I was wondering how he didn't wither away." tambourine_man36 We toyed with the idea that he eats a lot of domestic animals kept by people unwise enough to live by the mountain. But we also discussed that maybe he is sustained by the gold in some way. "Peter Jackson's cameo means the drunk guy in FOTR is looking pretty good for his age. Is he one of the Dunedain?" tomfeldpausch No, he is definitely a hobbit! Possibly with a bit of dwarf in there as well. Pete's cameo in Fellowship was an accident: he was supposed to be a genuine extra in Bree and was given a pipe to smoke, but he couldn't do it, so someone shoved a carrot in his hand. It was so absurd that we had to resurrect it. To answer the question, there must be a bunch of morons who wander the streets of Bree eating carrots. "What is up with the elven king? His face was rotting away - was he cursed or diseased?"ranran-001 The conceit is that Thranduil has faced the great fire-breathing dragons and been scarred by them, physically and emotionally. He's used the magic of the elves to conceal it. That also perhaps explains what's happened to Legolas' mum. "I thought elves were teetotal" Feebane72 Textually, no, we know absolutely that elves can drink. We actually had an argument when we wrote the feasting scene in The Two Towers, where Legolas outdrinks Gimli. I think we can conclude that Elvish wine is a hell of a lot stronger than Rohirrim beer. "I thought for sure we would get the infamous scene where Gandalf meets Thrain in Dol Guldur... are they going to explain how Gandalf got the key?" benjobuff It will be in the extended cut. If we start these movies with Gandalf knowing what's in Dol Guldur, you lose tension immediately. Thrain is played by one of the great English actors, Sir Anthony Sher, and he's mad, but coming and going in a really good way. "What's up with Bombur not getting a line, FFS?" autodude Bombur is just a man of few words. Mainly because he's got food in his mouth most of the time. Incidentally, only two of the dwarves have children. Gloin, who has Gimli. And Bombur. who has 14. We decided that for dwarf women Bombur is the most sexy!

The Thrain subplot is really intriguing, together with extended scenes with Beorn,Mirkwood, possibly Woodland Realm and Desolated Dale plus some other surprises(Laketown,Erebor),will make the EE of DOS a dreamy one.I sincerely hope this will be the case.

Thank you for that :) The Thrain material is what I'm most looking forward to seeing most, probably because we first saw it in the first teaser trailer in December 2011 and despite being in trailer after trailer we've never actually seen it. Those Dol Guldur sequences in the Theatrical felt rushed and poorly edited (Gandalf's mouth doesn't move when he's saying the spell for instance), but I'm glad we will definitely be seeing Thrain Roll on the Autumn!

And it's sounding more and more as though the EE version will be THE definitive version of DOS, even though I am an insane fan of the film already. But IMO more can only be better. All those maddening little images of scenes I want more of - like this:
and dwarves in Dale:
and what are Thranduil and Legolas talking about? Inquiring minds want to know!

This?
And PS 2 this is OT, but as another Beorn lover who wishes there had BEEN more Beorn, I really, really hope this is the Beorn of BOFA - from a Deviant Art artist J. Kilpatrick. THIS is the Beorn I see who will tear up the orcs, and find Thorin - hope.

The actual Elvish anyway. Click here, it's at 3.00. Translation anyone?
Fan of both books and movies. Oh, and it seems I have severely misnamed myself... for the moment. Thranduil Appreciation: I, II, III, IV "BoFA"= The Battle || "BotFA"/"tBofTA" = The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
