World Hobbit Day at TORn's message boards - get your promo/celebration footer!

Grammaboodawg is doing some informal organizing of a World Hobbit Day Celebration here at the message boards. She wrote: On September 22nd, there's going to be a very special birthday that's also an anniversary that's also a celebration all wrapped into one! It's Bilbo and Frodo's birthdays, it's also falling on Tolkien Week AND it's the 75th anniversary of The Hobbit publication! *whispers* It's actually the September 21st(1937;) but after 75 years, we'll hold off for a day ;) I volunteered to do some promo/celebration footers for the event. Some of you might remember I did some for Tolkien Reading Day a few years back when we were had a "T is for Tolkien" theme. People volunteered to adopt a letter and write a short piece on some word/character/place/etc from Tolkien's writing starting with that letter. I created a series of footers from A to Z using the words people chose. You can see those footers here. I decided to do something similar for World Hobbit Day. Being the 75th Anniversary of the publication of The Hobbit, I created 75 different footers. Each shows a book cover of The Hobbit. The covers range in publication date from 1942 to 2012 and in language editions from a wide range of languages. A new feature in the offering of these footers is the element of surprise. I'm going to tell you how to get a footer but I'm not going to reveal -- or let you peruse ahead of time -- which footer has which book. You won't know, until you install it, which book cover you're getting. At the moment, the book covers are not identified although some of you here might recognize some. The url path for footer #1 is as follows: http://www.amagpiesnest.com/a/torn/whd/footers/whd01.jpg Each footer will have that same url path except for swapping out the 01 with any number up to and including 75. Some examples would be: http://www.amagpiesnest.com/a/torn/whd/footers/whd02.jpg http://www.amagpiesnest.com/a/torn/whd/footers/whd03.jpg http://www.amagpiesnest.com/a/torn/whd/footers/whd10.jpg http://www.amagpiesnest.com/a/torn/whd/footers/whd75.jpg
NOTE: for the first nine footers you must put a zero in front of the number. 01, 02, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 09. To instructions on how to use this code to put an image into your footer, see this page: http://www.amagpiesnest.com/...ters/footer_post.htm You don't have to worry about size (I've taken care of that) and don't worry about it being on a 'site you own'. I'm giving you permission to use images on my site. Jump down to "The Code" and use the url of the image you desire for the rest of the instructions. PLEASE NOTE: Altaira has asked that we keep images in footers to no more than two at a time. If your footer already contains images and text, please take a moment to make sure it is laid out in a way that takes up as little vertical space as possible. If you have two images already, you may need to temporarily remove one while you're carrying the World Hobbit Day footer. I sometimes copy off the code in my standard footer and put it in a Notepad file so I can put some code in for a special celebration. If you have questions or you need more instructions on how to make this work as a footer, please post them in feedback. If you are making a new thread in Feedback to ask a question about the World Hobbit Day footers, then put that in the header: Question about World Hobbit Day Footers. If there is a thread existing with a question already, feel free to post your question there. I'll try to help but there are lots of other people who can help as well. If you have questions or comments about the actual content of the footers - or TORn's World Hobbit Day celebration - that can go here. :-) I will make a reply to this post supplying some of the sites I used for reference. Enjoy!

You found 75 different book-covers? You are amazing, Magpie! And to post one in one's footer, sight-unseen - how brave and daring can we be? Thank you so much, you have already made this a "party of special magnificence"! *goes off to think about which number to choose*

And that's saying a lot!! How intriguing and perfect for this celebration :) An Unexpected Footer! hmmmmmm.... okay... I have to narrow it down. 19 is how old I was when I found Tolkien. 51 is how old I was when I found TORn. 58 is how old I was when I went to New Zealand. As you can see, by decision isn't about how many g'kiddies I have or how many dwarves there are... it's all about ME! *fluffs hair* I'll choose #19. That's when all of this started for me. I can't WAIT to see which it is! 75 Hobbit covers... WOW! Thank you for this, Magpie. So incredibly unique and personal while being so much fun! Truly a great tribute for a very special day :) *warm hug*
I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

I chose #2, as my birthday is 02/02. Seemed appropriate. Edit: And I love it! Thanks Magpie.

What a great idea. I went for number 22. Edit: Now that's interesting. That looks like Russian on the bottom line. A different alphabet anyway.

You are the perfect person to have compiled these! A small part of me can't help but think that you've had these images all along in one of your "collections", just waiting for an opportunity to use them like this. Now, if I've done the code right, there should be #45 in my footer.

Obviously, I got the code wrong. I forgot to take out the zero of "01". Trying again...

But then, we know that everything Magpie does is well done. In a rare medium, even I chose footer 13, since today is the 13th and is my son's birthday. Yes, he was born on Friday the 13th. Unfortunately, I won't be here on the 22nd, since I have to attend an f/sf convention in Dallas. Ah well. I hope they've put me on The Hobbit panel, as I asked.

It really was hard to choose! Thank you so much Magpie! (I like how the one below creates the optical illusion of the image being askew in the footer.)
