where humour was more evident (understandably): Gandalf and Gloin: Gloin: "What does he say? Does he offer us insult?" Gandalf: "No Master Gloin - he is offering you food." Gloin: "Very well then. Lead on!" Bilbo: "Is he a great wizard, or is he more like you?" Bofur: "Think 'furnace, with wings'." And for a bit of fun, here is IMDB's list of Bifur's movie quotes: http://www.imdb.com/...ter/ch0234326/quotes
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. An Unexpected Journey Bilbo: I'm a Baggins, of Bag-End! Radagast: Sebastian! Thorin: Out of the frying pan ... Gandalf:... and into the fire. Run ... Run! Ori: Have they got any chips? Saruman: You've been busy of late, my friend. The Desolation of Smaug Bilbo: Mine! (after killing the spider and taking back the Ring) Smaug:I am fire ... I am death! Beorn: So, you are the one they call Oakenshield? Master of Lake-town: An election? I wouldn't stand it! Alfrid: I don't think they'd ask you to stand, sire.

Gandalf: Saruman believes it is only great power that can hold evil in check, but that is not what I have found. I found it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Bilbo: "Mine!" or "I'm going on an adventure!" Gollum: Shut up! Bilbo: I didn't say anything Gollum: We wasn't talking to you Thorin: Where did you go, if I may ask? Gandalf: To look ahead. Thorin: and what brought you back? Gandalf: Looking behind. Bard: You have no right to enter that mountain! Thorin: I have the only right! Tauriel: I have seen the world fall away and the white light of forever fill the air.

"At this time therefore the Sindar were well-armed, and they drove off an creatures of evil, and had peace again; but Thingol’'s armouries were stored with axes and with spears and swords, and tall helms, and long coats of bright mail (...) What Nira said plus in AUG Gollum “What has it got in its pocketses?” [Thorin]“You! What were you doing? You nearly got yourself killed! Did I not say that you would be a burden? That you would not survive in the wild and that you had no place amongst us? I’ve never been so wrong in all my life! I am sorry I doubted you.” [Bilbo:] “No, I would have doubted me too. I’m not a hero or a warrior...not even a burglar.” in DOS: Bilbo -- vs Spiders [Spider:] “It stings! Stings!” [Bilbo:] “Sting. That’s a good name.” "Mine!" “Truly, the tales and songs fall utterly short of your enormity, O Smaug the Stupendous.” Gandalf “What did I tell you? Quiet as a mouse. Excellent burglar material.” -Gandalf “We will take the Elven Road. That path is still safe.” - Gandalf “This is not the Greenwood of old. The very air of the forest is heavy with illusion. It will seek to enter your mind and lead you astray.” - Thranduil "Some may imagine a noble quest is at hand. A quest to reclaim a homeland and slay a dragon. I myself suspect a more prosaic motive. Attempted burglary, or something of that ilk." “Such is the nature of evil. Out there in the vast ignorance of the world it festers and spreads, a shadow that grows in the dark. A sleepless malice as black as the oncoming wall of night. So it ever was; so will it always be. In time, all foul things come forth.” "“I know you’re there. Why do you linger in the shadows?”" Narzug “Sha hakhtiz khunai-go, Golgi!” “The dwarf runt will never be king.” “Our time has come again. My master serves the One. Do you understand now, Elfling? Death is upon you. The flames of war are upon you-” Bard “Listen to me! You don’t know what is coming!” Smaug “I am fire. I am...DEATH!” Conversation bits: [Legolas:] “Why did you do that? You promised to set him free.” [Thranduil:] “And I did. I freed his wretched head from his miserable shoulders.” [Legolas:] “There was more the orc could tell us.” [Thranduil:] “There was nothing more he could tell me.” [Thorin:] “I am not my grandfather.” [Balin:] “You’re not yourself. The Thorin I know would not hesitate to go in there-” [Thorin:] “I will not risk this quest for the life of one burglar.” [Balin:] “Bilbo. His name is Bilbo.”
Fan of both books and movies. Oh, and it seems I have severely misnamed myself... for the moment. Thranduil Appreciation: I, II, III, IV "BoFA"= The Battle || "BotFA"/"tBofTA" = The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies

From AUJ: Gandalf: I'm looking for someone to share in an adventure. Gandalf: All good stories deserve embellishment. Gandalf: You will have to do without pocket handkerchiefs, and a great many other things, before we reach our journey's end, Bilbo Baggins. You were born to the rolling hills and little rivers of the Shire, but home is now behind you. The world is ahead. Bilbo: I have... I have never used a sword in my life. Gandalf: And I hope you never have to. But if you do, remember this: true courage is about knowing not when to take a life, but when to spare one. The Goblin King: Well, well, well... look who it is! Thorin, son of Thrain, son of Thror, King Under the Mountain! Oh, but I'm forgetting, you don't have a mountain, and you're not a king, which makes you nobody, really. From DOS: Beorn: I don't like dwarves. They are greedy and blind, blind to the lives of those they deem lesser than themselves... But orcs, I hate more. Thorin: Fili, don't be a fool. You belong with the Company. Fili: I belong with my brother! Balin: Oh, and Bilbo... if there is, in fact, a live dragon down there, don’t waken it. Bilbo: What have we done?

The way Thorin delivered that line towards Bilbo with a mixture of annoyance, irritation at Bilbo's prescence, arrogance, grumpyness and still with the air of authority befitting of a (potential) King. Not bad from 4 words that could have added nothing character worthy, as Frank Sinatra once said it's the singer not the song.

AUJ Bilbo: No, no, wait, wait, stop! Stop! We have to turn around. Gandalf: What on earth is the matter? Bilbo: I forgot my handkerchief. Nori: Just a couple of keepsakes. Bofur: We were on the road. Well, it's not so much a road as a path. Actually, it's not even that, come to think of it. It's more like a track. Anyway, the point is, we were on this road, like a path, like a track. And then we weren't, which is a problem, because we were supposed to be in Dunland last Tuesday. Gollum: What has it got in its nasty little pocketses? Bilbo: Look, I know you doubt me, I know you always have. And you're right, I often think of Bag End. I miss my books. And my armchair. And my garden. See, that's where I belong. That's home. And that's why I came back, cause you don't have one. A home. It was taken from you. But I will help you take it back if I can. DOS Dwalin: Oh, come on, come on, enough of the niceties. Dwalin: Oh, I've had enough of this lippy lakeman. I say we throw him over the side and be done with it. Master: And all this talk of change must be suppressed. Can't afford to let the rabble band together and start making noises. The next thing you know, they'll start asking questions, forming committees, launching inquiries. Alfrid: There is even talk of an election. Master: An election? That's absurd. I won’t stand for it.

Re DOS I'm thinking I'm gonna hafta leave Thorin and Balin and maybe Bilbo out of this, as practically everything they say is a favorite line. Especially Thorin. And come to think of it, probably Thranduil. Hmm - from DOS only: Smaug: Do you think flattery will keep you alive?....no indeed. (also "has weighed the value of your life and found it worth nothing.") Necromancer: Death will come to all. Kili: When we look upon the halls of our fathers....Thorin... Fili: ...tales you told us...you cannot take that away from him...I will carry him if I must! Bard: And go where? There is...nowhere to go. (Plus of course the confrontation w. Thorin, meeting the dwarves, and "it's a small town Alfrid. Everyone knows where everyone lives." And the prophecy reading *chills*) Beorn: ...but orcs I hate more. What do you need? Master of Laketown: They're commoners Alfrid. They've always been ugly. Alfrid: I don't think they'd ask you to stand, sire. Gandalf: Turn around. And do not come back (not sure I got that one right, but it's something like that). Radagast: These spells are old, and full of hate. Who's buried here? Dwalin: He'll see us. Sure as death (his expression is perfect as is that scene).

Thorin and Bilbo end scene! (Gawd I love that scene *wipes tears*) Plus for me the Bag End speech and Thorin to Elrond "What of it?" And the Thorin/Balin interaction at Bag End. And: "It matters. I want to know - why did you come back" to Bilbo "and that's why I came back. Because you don't have one - a home. But I will take help you take it back if I can." *more wiping tears* LOL time for an AUJ/DOS marathon.

...reading all of these great quotes, I think I cannot choose a single favourite. Gandalf: I am looking for someone to share in an adventure. Goblin King: I feel a song coming on... Catchy, isnt it? It is one of my own compositions. Nori: I feel like I am on a funeral. Oin: Did somebody die? Fili: I will carry him if I must. Balin: Bilbo. His name is Bilbo.
“And the ship went out into the High Sea and passed into the West, until at last on a night of rain Frodo smelled a sweet fragrance on the air and heard the sound of singing that came over the water. And then it seemed to him that as in his dream in the house of Bombadil, the grey rain-curtain turned all to silver glass and was rolled back, and he beheld white shores and beyond them a far green country under a swift sunrise.”

"Give him a pony." The way Thorin delivered that line towards Bilbo with a mixture of annoyance, irritation at Bilbo's prescence, arrogance, grumpyness and still with the air of authority befitting of a (potential) King. Not bad from 4 words that could have added nothing character worthy, as Frank Sinatra once said it's the singer not the song. So true! And there's a line by Radagast that I think falls into that category too: “This is not a nice place to meet.” It was such a simple line, but the way he delivers it, with such a mixture of gentle innocence and mild consternation, not overplayed, just right. Loved it.

Poor Bilbo ("he's been lost ever since he left home - he has no place amongst us"). Love Thorin but ouch. Course all that just makes me more misty-eyed at the end of AUJ

"I like to hear both Benedict and Lee´s delivering, authority and elegance, Thorin is more like authority and wildness" So I gotta add to all this re Thorin "I have the only right". To me that was a perfect delivery and the King Under the Mountain came into his own right on the steps of the Master's house. LOL when Thorin climbs a few steps and looks Bard in the eye *cheers*.

The first is more of a monologue, I suppose and, in my opinion, is one of the very finest lines Walsh and Co. have ever penned: Tauriel: "I have walked there sometimes, beyond the forest and up into the night. I have seen the world fall away and the white light of forever fill the air." I don't know of any point in all five films so far that better captures the spirit, the feel of Tolkien than this. Some may match it; none surpass it. The second is a single word: Balin (as the Hidden Door opens): "Thorin..."
