Hello everyone, I'm sorry if I'm not doing this correctly. I've never made a thread or a post or whatever you call this. Many of you probably knew my mother Hobbitlove, and also know that she passed away this winter. I want to get a tattoo in her honor, but I want to make sure it's just right. I want to get the Elvish word for Mother. I know there is Sindarin and Quenyan, but I don't know which one would be more appropriate to get. I'd like whichever one Frodo would have used or known. I know this is a silly post and a silly reason, but I wanted to consult the experts before I made any permanent decisions. I'm happy to hear any thoughts or suggestions.

So great to see you here. I saw you in NYC at the Lord of the Rings concerts - it was so great to see you and your dad. I miss your mom, and I love that you are getting a tattoo in her honor. I am sure many people here can give you some great ideas - unfortunately I can't do that.

I actually think your idea is lovely. I regret I am not one of TORn's resident experts on Middle-earth's languages but I'm sure you will get a knowledgeable reply from at least one of them. I wish you the best of luck with creating the perfect tattoo in honor of your mother. Let us know how it turns out!

I never had a chance to meet your mother in person, but sher came across as a truly wonderful person - wise, generous, loving and happy. It is often said the internet brings out the worst in poeple - but if in real life she was even better, you have been truly blessed. I am sorry I can't help you myself, being no expert on neither Elvish languages nor tattooes; but I can say that while Frodo did know Sindarin, he spoke Quenta only haltingly, but even this was considered a major achievement (according to Gildor in ch. I:3).

Don't worry, it's not silly - it's a beautiful way to honour your mother. Until someone who knows more comes along - and there are people here who know much more about the languages than I do, the only thing I can tell you - well, I think I can - is that when Frodo uses a few words in Elvish in the book it's referred to as 'the High Elven tongue', which is Quenya. And I think Tolkien used something like amil or amille (with two dots over the e) to mean mother, but I'm not sure.

Have you also used the name Loves_horses? I remember your mom fondly, having met her (and your dad and you, I think) in NYC. She was a very special lady. I'm delighted that you're considering this way to honor her. I did a search for "mother", and found that dormouse is correct: - in Quenya, "mother" can be found as amillė or amil (this may be the form of the word used when combining it with other words), with "mommy" equating to ammė. - In Sindarin, "mother" is nana, and "mommy" is naneth. As sador and dormouse have mentioned, Frodo did know the High-elven (Quenya). I like the first Quenya word, and it would be very pretty in Tengwar. Here's a link to a transcriber, so you can see what it would look like: http://www.arno.org/tengwar/ Do let us know what you decide to do!

Its taken me 3 days to figure out how to reply, lol. I have it all worked out now. It was so great to meet so many of Mom's friends in NYC, it warms my heart to know that she was loved by so many people. Everyone's responses have been so kind. Thank you for the support!

Loves_horses is my sister! Thank you for the excellent link, that helps a lot. I think I'm going to go with amillė, but I have to sit and stare at it and fret for a while. Do you have any advice on which mode I should put it in for the Tengwar?

Please send her greetings from me! What might be best, would be if you could print out the different modes, and look at them for a while, and see which one "feels" right for you. They're all valid, so it should be the one that you're the most comfortable with!

So you can see what the Tengwar script looks like as a tattoo. It translates to "Not all who wander are lost". The heart is the same heart I sign on the cards and letters to all my kids. Take your time and find exactly how you want it to look. A good tattoo artist will put the design on some kind of thin paper so you can see what it will look like on your skin. What you've chosen is a beautiful way to remember your mom.
