The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Geeky Observations List 11/28/2013 ** are new entries
AND SO IT BEGINS – Bilbo's study will be set up exactly as it was in FotR since it's the same day for Fellowship of the Ring as in The Hobbit.
1. Bilbo strikes a match to light his candle and scuttles down the hallway in the dark. It's very dark in Bag End, so he's up very early to write his confession/story for Frodo in the Red Book of Westmarch before dawn.
2. In the chest:
1) Scrolls
2) Helm (from Troll's hoard? -– Erebor Dwarvish?) From the front From the side It's a helmet we haven't seen yet. Dain? Lake-town? It looks like it has a bit of a fantail that's perched from ear to ear... like a peacock tail.
3) Sting in its sheath
4) Short, dark, broad iron blade
5) String-tied wrapping (Mithril Shirt?)
6) There is a golden velvet cloth that looks like it might be a bag. That may contain the Mithril. Velvet seems a better wrapping for Mithril.
7) Quills
8) Red Book
9) Giant claw or tooth (dragon?)
10) There's a cloth rumpled towards the back of the trunk. Could it be the borrowed cloak from his adventure?
11) There's a bear-shaped newel.
3. Bilbo has a striped quill at his desk.
4. There is a jar on the top of his desk that has three pipes in it.
5. Two swords are mounted on the wall behind Bilbo’s desk appear to be the same ones from LOTR, one looking very much like Strider's Ranger Sword, the other like the Asian Dao that may have been an inspiration for the shape of Orcrist.
6. High up on the walls in the halls, there is a running shelf. It has lots and lots of small stones on it, probably from Bilbo's walks (also visible in young Bilbo's home)
7. Flowers at Bag-End: There are white foxgloves growing to the right of the front door. There are also nasturtiums, coneflowers, painted daisies, blue baptisa, and orange tuberoses behind his left shoulder.
DALE and EREBOR
8. The rock interior of Erebor is a green cast compared to LotR's Moria grey and black coloring.
9. Gold ore veins are laced throughout the walls and gold colors trim the architecture.
10. The buildings of Dale are similar to the color of Erebor's interior. A lot of patina-green and golden colors.
11. Dwarf women beards are wispy, short, and grow mainly along their jawlines... not easy to see. There are bearded dwarf women in both the Dale street scene before the dragon comes.
12. One of Dwarf women is richly dressed selling things off a tray she has hanging on her shoulders.
13. The society of Dale is orderly and refined as displayed by something as simple as a doll with earrings. They are very multicultural and multi-colorful, jovial and diverse.
14. The road between Dale and Erebor's front gate is busy with people and traffic.
15. The kites flying over Dale are a red dragon, a light yellow turtle and a blue bird.
16. There are human children riding on a little carousel of sculpted metal animals for them to ride. A rooster, a ram, and a horse-like creature. Perhaps a whimsical something the dwarves would have made for their neighbors.
17. Erebor seemed particularly to be a marketplace.
18. Hobbiton, very agrarian. Erebor, more urban.
19. There are lots of toys and childlike amusements, many mechanical in nature.
20. A toymaker is rotating a wheel to spin the wings on a large blue bird.
21. One of the vendors is selling jewelry.
22. Some wooden toys that looked like they could be jointed.
23. Dale has a fascination with both mechanical contraptions and jewels & metals (the jewelry).
24. There's a minstrel/musician within the crowd. In this picture, we can see a minstrel/musician.
25. There is someone who looks Elvish. The hairstyle - quite long, fairly straight, and parted so the ear shows.
26. There is a peacock in the area with the musician and Elf-ish character. he person at the top right of this picture looks Elvish
27. There's not a lot of drinking and smoking in Erebor's Marketplace.
28. The soldiers of Dale have arrows with alternating dark and light feathers. Their helms resemble a Turkish or Mongolian design.
29. The horns that sound the alarm are long and thin with wide openings/flairs. There are 4 of them side-by-side on the tower facing in one general direction.
30. There are places for more horns in the tower.
31. Erebor and Dale are decorated with many flags and banners.
32. The flags flying from Erebor's battlements are blue with what looks like a bronze or golden bird.
33. There are 7+ giant dwarven statues flanking each side of the great hall leading to Thror's throne
34. Thror’s throne is built into the end of a massive carving in the solid rock that is brought to a point from the roof of the cavern to the floor where his throne is carved.
35. Thranduil comes to Erebor and approaches Thror's throne flanked by 4 of his emissaries.
36. **The rock that the throne is carved from has an enormous vein of gold in it. A fitting Throne for a King under the mountain. and it's good that the dwarves have not mined from it.
37. Thorin stands to Thror's right with a dwarf holding a chest (for Thranduil?), while Thrain and another dwarf stands to Thror's left.
38. **The chest of white gems shown to Thranduil are Esgalen (sp?).
39. **Thranduil's eyes glimmer like Galadriel.
40. It looks like there's a tattoo between Thrain's eyes, possibly to adorn the damage to his left eye.
41. The dwarves have developed tools to work their treasure and rock.
Gem workers use:
42. Scales are being used (2 kinds) One for balancing between 2 trays and one shaped like gallows.
43. Glasses are worn by the workers (spectacles covering both eyes)
44. Just before the scene where the Arkenstone is found, there's a fountain of molten gold spewing far back in the shot.
Miners use:
45. Candles are mounted on both sides of the dwarves' helms to give them light while working.
46. Wide leather straps hang down along each side of their faces to protect their ears from flying stone chips.
47. The chains holding up the dwarves in the finding of the Arkenstone scene look pretty similar to the abandoned chains in the mines of Moria.
Smaug attacks:
48. In Thror's over-loaded treasure room, there are golden shields lined up to support the piles of gold.
49. The treasure trove of gold is beautiful. The color of the gold looked heavy and solid, like that much gold and trinkets should. It wasn't sparkly and fake looking.
50. As Thorin backs away from seeing Thror in his dragon sickness, just before he melds with the dark, small flickers of gold are reflected in Thorin's eyes. A portent, perhaps.
51. There are guards standing on the piles of treasure.
52. On the wall just before the attack, we can see that Balin has a ring shaped like the letter "B". It could be presumed that it was Dwarvish runes, but DanielLB looked it up and found it's an "M". It might be meant to be an English/Westron B, or a Dwarvish/Cirth M.
53. Thorin immediately knows there's a dragon attacking and sounds the alarm. Even Balin did not read the signs.
54. Bilbo calls the dragon a Fire-drake from the North.
55. Thorin pulls Balin to safety when the dragon's fire covers the balcony.
56. Thorin's hair seems to get singed a bit.
57. Thorin heads the defense of the front gate against the dragon.
58. When Smaug is smashing at the doors of Erebor trying to get in and Thorin is waiting with his army, you can see a painting of (probably) the Lonely Mountain to the left of the doors.
59. When Thorin is running at the front of the Dwarf troops, Thráin is next to him.
60. Thror´s armor is made up of scales, as if it was foreshadowing Smaug
61. The dragon's long red tail, gator-type legs/feet, large bat-like wings and spiked head are apparent during his attack.
62. Thorin just misses getting stepped on by Smaug
63. Thror runs to the throne and presses a button to release the Arkenstone mounted above his throne seat.
64. Thror holds the Arkenstone like it's hot.
65. As the gold and treasure is cascading in the attack, Thror drops the Arkenstone into the flowing gold pieces.
66. When Smaug reaches Erebor's treasure (when Thror drops the Arkenstone), the gold/treasure is flowing, being tossed in the air, and the noise that action would make is going on when Thorin helps Thror get up and literally drags him away.
67. Thorin rescues Thror after the Arkenstone is lost. When Thorin pulls Thrór away from Smaug after King Butterfingers drops the Arkenstone, Thorin points his sword at the dragon.
68. Smaug is already rooting in the treasure like a cat in catnip or a bird in a puddle.
69. There are bearded dwarf women fleeing Erebor through the front gates. Just watch for any of the women who are shorter than those around them.
70. As the dwarves flee Erebor through the front gates, one dwarf is carrying a dwarf-child to safety.
71. Thror runs out just ahead of Thorin, who is supporting an injured Thráin. Just ahead of them is Peter... I mean... an unknown Dwarf seen when Thorin cries, "Run for your lives!"
72. Thorin waves at Thranduil and calls for the elves to “Help us.” Thranduil turns away.
73. Thranduil' nods his head slightly to the right when acknowledging Thrór on his throne and again after the attack on Erebor at Thorin as he turns his Army and leaves.
74. When the dwarves are trekking away from Erebor some of their livestock look like impala or ibex.
75. As the Dwarves wander the lands, Thorin stand atop a hill and gestures to the mountains. The pack he's carrying off his shoulder looks like his cloak.
76. Working as a blacksmith, Thorin hammers the hot metal with intensity and anger. [more on this in TIDBITS LIST]
BACK TO BAG END
77. When Bilbo's done writing about Dale and the Dwarves' story, it's become light outside. It was dark out when he started.
78. There's a bi-folding door on Bilbo's pantry with a slide-latch.
79. Frodo chews on a pastry as he leaves the pantry and goes out to get the mail.
80. When Frodo comes out of the pantry, there is a string of garlic bulbs just inside the door.
81. When Frodo brings Bilbo the mail, he glances down at the open chest as he goes into the study. It's probably not open very often, so he went straight over to investigate its contents as soon as he could.
82. Frodo reaches over and looks at Bilbo’s sketch of when he (Bilbo) was younger that he keeps in the Red Book. “What’s this?” Frodo has never seen this image of young Bilbo before.
83. Bilbo seems frustrated and secretive with Frodo. Could it be Frodo's always very inquisitive and into everything?
84. A piece of parchment on Bilbo's desk is filled with writing; the first line is "There was a merry messenger...": this is the first line of Tolkien's poem "Errantry", which eventually evolved into "The Lay of Earendil" in LOTR.
85. Bilbo was so engrossed in his story; he'd forgotten that his birthday party was today!
86. Bilbo has a pipe rack on his desk
87. There are two pictures: one a painting of the Green Dragon (?), and the other a floor plan of Bag End on the left and right wall. Both pictures are present in AUJ, FOTR and ROTK,
88. When Frodo talks to Bilbo in his study, over his shoulder there is a large pine cone, just sitting on a shelf.
89. There's a keg in the hall near the dining room.
90. The treasure Bilbo brought back was the gold buried in the troll cave, not treasure from Erebor. "It still smell of Troll."
91. There is another door to the dining room we see when Bilbo is hiding the small chest and book from Lobelia. Seen when he reaches for the book at the top of the bookshelf.
92. There's a cushion on the bench on Bilbo's (?) side of the table in the dining room.
93. As Bilbo writes something at the table, you can see the Thror's framed map that Gandalf looks at in LotR.
94. There are 4 chimneys above Bag End… each chimney shows where there’s a fireplace throughout Bag End.
95. Laundry is hanging on the clothesline.
96. Bilbo does not consider himself anti-social as he asks Frodo to hang a sign on the gate, "No Admittance Except On Party Business"
97. Frodo has taken a book out to the gate and carries it as he runs down the road to meet Gandalf in the East Farthing.
98. **Just before we see Bilbo smoking and after Frodo runs off, there are 2 hobbits down at the path in front of the Party Tree who hug like they are saying hello or goodbye.
99. The hedge/shrub has grown tall and thick behind the bench outside Bag End.
100. A reflection of Bilbo getting older may be shown by his bench being near Bag End's entrance. Perhaps some days he cannot handle the steps down and so has the bench on the same level as the door.
101. When old Bilbo is smoking on the bench by the front fence, the shrubbery behind him is mostly just green-very few flowers. Whereas, sixty years earlier when the "good morning" conversation happened, the shrubbery was full of blooms and flowers. Great nod to the difference of seasons-Old Bilbo was on September 22 (his birthday) so it was nearing Autumn, whereas young Bilbo was in the Spring.
YOUNG BILBO
102. “60 years earlier”
103. Old Bilbo blows a smoke ring into the air that collapses/transitions into a moth as Gandalf approaches young Bilbo sitting on that same bench. The smoke moth plunks Bilbo's nose startling him and he opens his eyes to find the Wizard standing before him.
104. Gandalf's staff is shaped like a flame, bringing Gandalf's Ring Narya to mind.
105. Bilbo's hair is much like Pippin's in style. His shirts are all collarless, too... like Pippin. A Tookish trait?
106. **Bilbo is wearing a waistcoat with yellow embroidery and a light greenish neckcloth. A nod to Tolkien's description of hobbit clothing in chapter 1 of TH. "They dress in bright colors (chiefly green and yellow); wear no shoes..."
107. There's a thatched roof birdhouse outside near Bilbo's walkway.
108. Bilbo is sitting on an orange-ish colored pad on the bench.
109. Gandalf has his silvery scarf over his shoulder. It's shinier than the Lórien silver weave.
110. During the Good Morning scene you can see a Hobbit lady hanging up clothes behind Gandalf.
111. Bilbo always points when he's about the protest.
112. There's a large basket of apples on the floor next to the front door. "Apples for walking." Easy to grab on the way out the door. Most are red with a green sitting on top.
113. Bilbo makes a quick little nod to himself after locking the door... thinking "That's that!"
114. Gandalf has a large, bent, rusted nail protruding from the bottom of his staff that he uses to scratch a symbol on Bilbo’s green door.
115. When Bilbo is startled after dealing with Gandalf and the Good Mornings, he ducks to the side of the interior door just like he does in FOTR EE when the SBs come knocking 60 years later.
116. **Bilbo throws his letters down on the windowsill to watch Gandalf walk away.
117. Bilbo shows 'startle' actions and being 'rabbity.' He even wiggled his nose at one point.
118. When Bilbo looks out the window and sees Gandalf leave, there’s a small wooden doll at a butter churn there on the sill.
119. Gandalf is humming when he walks away from Bilbo's door.
120. The crack in the corner of the tile where Bilbo drops the Ring before leaving for Rivendell isn't there. In AUJ time the floor looks shinier and there aren't any cracks.
121. There are polished roots from Bilbo’s tree above Bag End throughout the house.
122. There's a small vase of lilacs on the windowsill next to the front door.
HOBBITON MARKET
123. **Bilbo walks past the Gaffer's home with the yellow door.
124. **At the market, Bilbo is buying the fish he later has for dinner.
A MERRY GATHERING
125. As the lantern-carrying hobbit walks by Bag End, you can hear the laughter and partying from the Green Dragon.
126. Bilbo's dinner has pan-fried trout, cooked greens, carrots and taters. On the table is a bowl of lemon wedges, enormous honey pot & dipper, another small bowl of salt and one of pepper, and a drink.
127. Bilbo's fish pan appears to be cast-iron, with a wooden handle for grasping.
128. There is a big round silvery thing with long handles hanging on the wall over Bilbo's right shoulder as he sits down to his trout dinner.
129. The front porch lantern over the door is lit. Expecting company?
130. Bag End is well lit with candles throughout the hole, even in rooms Bilbo is not using.
131. All of the candles are tall as Bilbo's company arrives. The next morning, they are all low and snuffed out.
132. When Bilbo settles in for dinner then the Dwarves show up, he's in a nightshirt and patchwork robe.
133. Just before Dwalin arrives and Bag End is shown from the outside a Hobbit with a big bottle walks by and takes a sip. Probably just coming from the Green Dragon Inn.
134. When Bilbo opens the door and sees Dwalin, the Dwarf has is back to him, and is surveying the countryside. Perhaps it is an old warrior-habit.
135. **When Dwalin arrives and says "At your service," between not taking his eyes off Bilbo and his tone of voice, it sounds more like a threat than a polite greeting!
136. As Bilbo opens the door to his first two visitors, there's a contrast between Dwalin, whose intimidating appearance, fierce look and gruff voice belie his "at your service," and his brother Balin who gives Bilbo a big smile and a grand bow and then remarks on the night and the possibility of rain later rather than Bilbo's lapse of manners in not replying "at yours."
137. As Bilbo answers the door for Dwalin, a candle is melting and sputtering madly in the background.
138. Of the four Dwarves who bow to Bilbo when he opens the door, Dwalin is the only one who does not take his eyes off of Bilbo. The other three keep their heads down when they bow. But not Dwalin. He bows but doesn't lower his head. That's a soldier for you! Never take your eyes off someone is case they might try to attack.
139. Bilbo snags a biscuit from the plate before giving the rest to Dwalin
140. Dwalin has left crumbs spread all over Bilbo's table.
141. As Dwalin advises Bilbo that there are visitors at the door, there are many crumbs in his beard.
142. Young Bilbo’s Bag End is perfectly tidy, in stark contrast to the absolute clutter of old Bilbo’s Bag End. A change in priorities?
143. Balin Bows. Our first glimpse of Balin shows him bowing.
144. Balin literally responds to Bilbo during the Bag End scene:
...Bilbo – "Good evening" -- Balin – "Yes. Yes, it is. Although I think it might rain later."
...Bilbo – "I'm sorry." -- Balin – "Apology accepted."
Such a great little contrast moment in the script after Gandalf's riff on the various meanings of 'Good morning'.
145. When Balin and Dwalin are greeting each other, Bilbo leans out the door in befuddlement, and looks around, as if to say "How many MORE of these are out there?"
146. When Balin arrives at Bag End, Dwalin is just trying to get hold of the contents of a big cookie-jar. Without success though, as his dwarven hands are too big.
147. The head-butt greeting Balin and Dwalin share is an homage to Viggo Mortensen who would greet his friends by saying something endearing and then slam them in the forehead with his own (talks about in eedvd commentaries). White light! White light!
148. Peter (Drogo) and Fran's (Primula) pictures are over the fireplace.
149. Dwalin asks Balin if he has eaten and Balin replies, "I could eat again"
150. Bag End's floor creaks in protest when Dwalin and Balin are raiding the pantry ("Apology accepted") and just as Bilbo faints. Both events are basically in the same place right around the entrance of the pantry/larder... where there's surely been a lot of traffic through the years.
151. As Bilbo opens the door and sees Fili and Kili, he makes a non-distinct noise in his throat of exasperation and surprise.
152. Kili calls Bilbo, "Mr. Boggins".
153. Kili is the only one who greeted Bilbo by name... even if he did get it wrong.
154. When Bilbo opens the door, Fili has an open, friendly look, while Kili looks very serious or to be judging Bilbo, even giving him a once over while they introduce themselves.
155. Of all the Dwarves entering Bag End, only Kili comments on Bilbo's hobbit hole when he says, "This is nice. Did you do it yourself" a statement quite odd for a Dwarf since the hobbit hole is completely lined with wood. There is definitely something coming with Kili and his (lovely) open minded attitude towards Elves and wood.
156. Bilbo asks Kili to stop wiping his boots on his mother’s glory box
157. Fili pulls his knives out of each boot, and his coat. He hands his weapons over to Bilbo until the hobbit ends up with a huge armful.
158. **Fili (brown) & Kili (green) have hoods when they arrive
159. Bilbo gets more and more rattled every time the doorbell rings.
160. Bilbo telling Fili and Kili "No! You can't come in!" and trying to shut the door on them. Kili looks so shocked, and Bilbo is so determined.
161. Heirlooms and things Bilbo tries to save
1. "Excuse me! That's my mother's West Farthing crockery. It's over a hundred years old!"
2. Bilbo tells Oin to put back "Grandpa Mungo's chair". Oin points to his ear and says to Bilbo that he can not hear what he is saying.
3. Bilbo says "that's grandpa Mungo's chair" and "that is, too!" referring to the chairs that Oin and Gloin carry. Thorin sits in one of these chairs at the dining room table later.
4.** After Oin is asked by Bilbo to put the chair back, you can hear him in the background (and see in subtitles) that he says, "That is a book not a coaster!" and immediately after, "Put that map back!"
5. His Mother's Glory Box when Kili wipes his feet on it.
6. Bilbo rescues his doily, announcing that "IT IS CROCHET!"
162. As Balin directs the others to help him move the breakfront out of the dining room, you can see his shoes, which have slight curls on the ends. Thorin's are blunt-toed.
163. In the pantry are several bundles of herbs, tomatoes, many cheeses including wheels of cheese, bottles of wine (Old Winyards?), kegs of ale...etc.
164. During the dinner preparations, Kili and Fili take it upon themselves to move the keg of ale closer to the dining room, but before they do, Fili appears to take a long drink right from the tap.
165. Just as Bombur comes out of the pantry bearing cheeses, there is a brief shot of Bifur behind him. He takes a bite out of a string of sausages that are still hanging up!
166. **Bilbo tries to save the tomatoes Ori takes, saying "Not my prize-winners," before Gandalf goes, "Ori!"
167. **Dori proves himself to be quite the, er, "Grey"-noser, waiting on Gandalf as though he were the host rather than Bilbo.
168. **Dori has a teacup and a wine glass for himself each time he serves the wizard with a beverage.
169. When Dori invites Gandalf to have some chamomile tea, his tray has two cups on it, presumably the second one for himself. Then when he brings Gandalf his teen tiny glass of red wine, the tray again has a second glass.
170. Dori shows great etiquette when serving Gandalf. Not a common Dwarf trait? (Thinks of Dwalin-fish/Kili-boots)
171. After the party of Dwarves and Gandalf arrive, Bilbo puts on his pants and suspenders over his nightshirt and gets rid of the robe.
172. When Bifur speaks Khuzdul to Gandalf in Bag End and does "that gesture", he is telling Gandalf that Thorin is missing. Speaking in Khuzdul he says, "He is our leader, he is not here", to which Gandalf's responds, "Quite right, Bifur...we seem to be one dwarf short."
173. Whenever Bifur speaks Khuzdul, the others understand but respond in the Common Tongue.
174. **After Kili and Fili relocate the ale barrel, Gandalf and Dwalin are in a discussion that Thorin is late.
175. When they are setting the table up and bringing out food, Bofur picks a biscuit/scone off a plate, takes a bite, he makes a "yummy" face, and puts the rest back onto the plate.
176. Ori wipes the plates with his sleeve while setting the table. He looks "very" attentively at Gandalf.
177. Gandalf helps put out silverware to prepare for the feast.
178. Even though Gandalf is setting silverware for each place at the table when he and Ori are setting the table together before supper, the only dwarf to actually use the utensils and not their hands is Thorin, who arrives AFTER supper and the table has been cleared. Not even Gandalf uses the utensils.
179. After the dwarves raid Bilbo's pantry, he is shown looking inside it. The dwarves left some loose pears and apples on the shelves (so it isn't completely bare) and some dried herbs.
180. **When the dwarves are carting food out of Bilbo's pantry, Kili takes a bite out of something on his plate on the way to the table.
181. Bofur likes to throw food at Bombur. An egg during dinner, and a sausage in Rivendell.
182. As Fili walks across the table passing out ales, you can see the mud on his boots. As you'll recall he got drafted to move furniture before he had a crack at the using the glory box.
183. The dwarves behave so atrociously in Bag End. Aside from the fact that they're 12 rowdy old friends to begin with, and it's a reunion, and you get a bunch of these types of males together under these circumstances, they'll act this way. And the food and drink is free.
184. Just before the Dwarves all tip back their tankards, Kili pounds on the table and knocks his into his lap.
185. When they are tipping back their tankards, there is a shot of Kili using both hands like Ori. Is it a young Dwarf thing?
186. The dwarves drink their ale and belch the same way Gimli did in Meduseld while Théoden/Aragorn talk about war and later during the drinking game.
187. Nori starts the belching contest. It appears to be some sort of accustomed practice. His brother, Ori, then bests him.
188. When Ori is letting go his monstrous belch, Bombur is watching him in wonder... frozen in mid-chug himself.
189. Bifur has salad green in his tankard when the Dwarves are toasting at the Party.
190. The first time we see Ori drinking from his tankard he is using two hands to hold it, which makes him look very young.
191. All the Dwarves have tankards, with the exception of Dori who has a clay goblet.
192. Gandalf’s plates and glass/mug are small while Hobbit and Dwarf scales are the same.
193. There's a tea set on a small table in the hall outside the dining room
194. The same pots, maps and furniture are here that are in Frodo's time
195. All the Dwarves have chunky hands and fingers with short fingernail beds.
196. Many of the dwarves have elements of their clothes reflecting the colour of their hoods mentioned in the books.
197. Nori also at one point uses a goblet. Or perhaps he's just taking it to the kitchen for cleaning. He's trying to clean it with a doily.
198. Nori has a string of sausages around his neck (like Sam) that Bofur grabs hold of and pulls Ori out of the room.
199. When Gandalf tries to assure Bilbo that this is a merry gathering and the sausage tug-of-war is going on, Dwalin is sitting on the hearth with his feet up looking quite relaxed.
200. Ori is very polite when he interrupts Bilbo during his frustrated conversation with Gandalf.
201. Dori and Ori (Nori?) are the most polite or well-bred of the Dwarven Company.
202. When the Dwarves start singing about what Bilbo hates, Bofur (blunt the knives), Nori, Gloin and Dori start the song when sitting at the table and thumping the silverware on the table and stomping their feet.
203. While the Dwarves are doing the dishes, Bofur plays the flute; Dwalin plays the fiddle (as in the book); Oin plays the teapot like a horn/wind instrument and Dori is drumming on the table.
204. The plates Balin sends off flying behind him are caught by a dancing Fili.
205. Balin looks like he finds the "blunt the knives" antics a bit tiresome. He's probably been through this many times before.
206. Bombur "cleans" all the plates as they wiz by him during the plates song. As each plate goes by, he grabs or swipes off whatever may have been still stuck to the plate.
207. As the words "pantry floor" are sung, and Kili throws a plate that Fili catches over his shoulder, you can see that Kili is actually completely perched in the door frame, feet off the floor and holding himself up with his back against one side of the door frame.
208. Fili and Bifur can catch something from behind without watching it, and then later Bifur managing to turn at precisely the right moment. Nori also manages to duck without really looking up.
209. Kili and Dwalin point out Bilbo's consternation and laughingly say, "Look at his face!" Balin, Gandalf, Bifur and Oin also join in on the laugh.
210. On the shelf, you can see the label on the bottle of wine. It says "XXXXXX wine" and has the date 1341 or 1361, and two initials below. Possibly Elderflower Wine, 1341Link to screencap
211. The tattoos on Dwalin's knuckles spell out "Baruk Khazad" (Axes of the Dwarves!)

215. When Thorin enters Bag End, Dwalin, Dori and Ori are standing nearest the door. Dori and Ori lightly bow to him. Dwalin does not.

218. After Thorin comes in, Gandalf rushes to close the door before Bilbo can see the mark he left on it. "The door was just painted..."
219. When Thorin arrives, he smiles at someone off to his right as he takes off his cloak. From that direction, Kili walks up and takes Thorin's cloak then stands to one side.
220. When Thorin first arrives, Gandalf is smiling and very nervous as Bilbo talks with Thorin and is obviously relieved but nervous about Thorin's first impressions and discussion with the Hobbit.
221. As Thorin questions Bilbo about his weapon of choice, Bilbo tries to stand a bit straighter and puff himself up a bit to seem tougher.

223. When Bilbo describes his skill at conkers, Dori expresses amusement; Dwalin dips his head slightly.
224. Games are mentioned a lot. Bilbo's quite gifted at conkers; croquet (if you have the balls for it); riddles.
225. Gandalf works very hard to make the dwarves believe everything is alright where Bilbo is concerned. As Bilbo reads the contract, Gandalf is smiling, quietly chuckling and looking nervously around the table.
226. Thorin sits in a chair that has a back that sort of looks rune-like. You can see a similar chair (or the same chair, moved) just to the right of the open doorway (near the front door), during the Misty Mountains song.
227. Thorin tells about his meeting as he eats some soup, ale, and biscuits. There's a tray of bite-size wraps and a plate of scones on the table.
228. Twelve of the dwarves eat like unsophisticated heathens at Bilbo's house, but Thorin eats his soup with manners befitting a king. Was soup all that was left at that point, or does Thorin just have more refined taste?
229. During the meeting with Thorin... Nori, Bofur, and Gandalf are smoking their pipes. Gloin starts out with a pipe, but quickly loses it.
230. All during the meeting at Bilbo's table, every Dwarf is fairly - or very - attentive to Thorin. But Bifur never looks at him or anyone else. He just sits there staring blankly in front of him.
231. When Balin comments that they are not the brightest, someone calls out "Who are you calling dim?"
232. After Fili's "We're fighters" speech, he nods to someone near the head of the table--presumably Thorin, who must have approved of the speech.
233. As Ori threatens Smaug's jaxsie, his brothers Nori and Dori exchange amused and affectionate glances ("oh, our little brother!"). Right after that, Dori pulls Ori back down to his seat.
234. The seating of the Dwarves, from our left to the right: Gandalf, Dwalin, Bifur, Oin, Fili, Kili, Bombur (at end), Ori, Dori, Nori, Gloin, Balin, Bofur and Thorin at the head of the table
235. Thorin announces that Oin has read the portents about it being an advantageous time to take back the Mountain.
236. Oin is apparently speaking about the portent as he has a thousand times before… which is why everyone rolled their eyes and looked like "here we go again!"
237. Oin glares fiercely across the table at Dori, who in the previous shot, had immediately shaken his head in disgust as soon as Oin started talking about the signs.
238. Gandalf lights his pipe with a magic flame from his finger... it keeps burning until he blows it out.

When Thorin says to the Dwarves, "If we have read these signs, do you not think others will have read them too... ...Do we sit back while others claim what is rightfully ours, or do we seize this chance to take back Erebor?" He then stands and cries, "Shazara!" which means "Silence!", and then again says "Du Bekâr! Du Bekâr!" meaning "To arms! To arms!"
240. Thorin and Bifur are the only ones that speak Khuzdul in Bag End.
241. Thorin gives Gandalf a glimmer of a knowing smile when Kili enthusiastically asks Gandalf how many dragons he’s killed.
242. As Gandalf talks about the map, Bofur and Bilbo move in to look at the map at exactly the same moment and the same movement.
243. The look on Thorin's face when Gandalf holds up the key - a combination of reverence, sorrow (perhaps for his father?) and hope. Or maybe just wonder.
244. When Gandalf presents Thorin with the key Balin is visibly disturbed.
245. While he would never be called a 'conjurer of cheap tricks', when Gandalf shows Thorin the key to the hidden door, he presents the key with a motion very like a stage magician conjuring an object out of thin air. A nice flourish.
246. Thorin didn't take the key from Gandalf. He waited until Gandalf released it to him. Very honourable.
247. The music that plays as Thorin receives the key to Erebor resembles the music that plays when Aragorn received the reforged Anduril.
248. When Fili says, "If there's a key...there must be a door." Oin gives him a "Well, obviously" look.
249. When Oin says, "He says he's an expert!" Fili gives Oin a puzzled "what?" look.
250. Gandalf gets all blown up and wizardry imposing with the Dwarves when they reject Bilbo as their burglar. Gandalf: “Enough! If I say Bilbo Baggins is a burglar, then a burglar he is.”
251. When Gandalf tells Thorin he was to find a 14th member, Bilbo is standing behind Thorin twiddling his thumbs nervously.
252. Bilbo doesn't take the contract. Thorin shoves it at him until he takes it.
253. Bofur calls the "beast" "Smaug the Terrible, Chiefest and greatest calamity" of our age. These are 2 of the names Bilbo calls Smaug in the book.

257. As Thorin talks with Balin about these dwarves who came to his call, we can see Bombur bringing food to a silent Bifur sitting down the hall. P'raps Bifur has had enough excitement and has withdrawn for a spell.
258. Balin nods over at Bifur and Bombur when he talks to Thorin about tinkers and toy-makers being the ones who came when Thorin called.
259. Thorin's Key has "Durin's Heir" written on it in Futhark (Dwarven runes)
260. Ori is looking through and writing or drawing in it a book in the dining room when Gandalf is talking to Bilbo about being a Took. Gloin and Oin are with him.
261. When Gandalf talks about all good stories deserve some embellishment, you see Oin and Gloin in the background with Ori. Ori is writing, and Oin points to his book and leans back laughing-perhaps he is embellishing a story he is telling Ori so Ori can record it in his book?
262. Bilbo's book is sitting on the arm of his chair where he left it.
263. On the wall behind Bilbo's armchair there is something that looks like a framed family tree. There's a picture of the party tree on the wall behind him as he's sitting by the fire.
264. There are baskets of pine cones next to each fireplace, presumably for starting fires - apparently pine cones make very good fire starters. Nice nod to the pine cones later on in the warg fight.
265. Bifur may be spaced out most of the time, but he's the first to rise when Thorin begins to sing.
266. While the Dwarves are singing, Bilbo listens despondently in his room.
267. Not all of the Dwarves are singing. Thorin, Bofur, Gloin and Balin are clearly singing. The rest of the Dwarves are humming along.
268. The wind quietly howls as they sing.
269. As the Dwarves are singing of the Lonely Mountain, Balin is tearing up.
270. During the misty mountain song, Nori starts off facing a wall, with his back to the group. Perhaps lost in his thoughts, or overcome by emotion for a moment.
271. When the Dwarves are singing, Bofur sits on the arm of Bilbo's chair and is the only one not standing during the song.
272. For a while, Thorin has his hand over his heart. None of the other Dwarves do it. It looks like it's meant to be an oath on his part (which would make sense given his conversation with Balin).
273. Ori is still holding a book while they're singing. A nod to him being the future author of the Book of Mazarbul that's shown in LOTR.
274. In Bilbo's bedroom are a 4-poster bed, towel rack, pitcher and bowl, a rocker and a stuffed chair, armoire, a basket of walnuts on the floor, a window... so it's an outer-wall room.
275. There are heavy curtains pulled aside in Bilbo's bedroom that would cover the window and wall.
276. The bedroom window is slightly open in Bilbo's bedroom.

THE QUEST BEGINS
278. When Bilbo wakes the next morning, the candle in his room is still smoking.
279. Bilbo slept in his clothes.
280. Bilbo never did get into bed properly. When he wakes in the morning, it's apparent he had just tipped over across the foot of the bed where he listened to the Dwarves sing. Sometime during the night he dropped his suspenders.
281. Bag End is spotless, empty and quiet. He even checks up the chimney.
282. The only evidence that the Dwarves had been at Bag End are the empty pantry, the burned-down candles, and a contract lying on the footstool right where Bilbo left it.
283. The candles in Bag End all have soot marks above them on the ceiling.
284. The houses we can see at the bottom of the hill with one red door and one yellow door is the same one we see at the end of ROTK when Sam comes home to Rosie, Elanor, and little Frodo. We can presume this is the Gamgee's house.

A hobbit (Mr. Worrywart) cries out, "Mr. Bilbo, where are you off to?" and behind him is a younger hobbit with curly reddish-brown or light brown hair - looking very much like Sam in LOTR - working in a garden with a rake. Could that be Sam's father, Ham Gamgee, the "Gaffer", who was a gardener before Sam?
291. Balin has a small wooden lap desk mounted in front of him on his saddle when the Company is riding out.
292. When Balin received Bilbo’s signed contract, he has a loupe (a small magnifier glass) he uses to read it.
293. Bilbo's smile is almost giddy when Balin formally welcomes him to the company of Thorin Oakenshield.
294. ** Bilbo's buttons have an acorn design on them. He's wearing a vest and corduroy coat with a light coloured neck scarf he keeps tucked in his shirt... at first.
295. Gloin has pony troubles at the beginning of their adventure. Just like his son had trouble with riding horses in LotR.
296. Bilbo does not want to ride. Fili and Kili lift him up and put him on the pack pony that was behind him.
297. All of the dwarves' ponies are shaggy.
298. Bilbo's pony, Myrtle, is carrying a large kettle, a large canvas bag of something (flour?), and many other items.
299. Nori took bets that Bilbo wouldn't show up.
300. Gandalf, Oin and Kili bet Bilbo would join the Company.
301. Bofur rips off the bottom of his shirt and tosses it back to Bilbo to use as a handkerchief.
302. Seven moths don’t mind being sucked into Bombur’s mouth and blown out again as he sleeps in their first camp.
303. Bilbo gets fed up with the snoring. This echoes Gimli's snoring in Lothlorien in FOTR, when Aragorn gets annoyed with Gimli's snoring.
304. When Bilbo gets up and stretches in their first night of camping, Myrtle the pony looks up and watches him as he walks towards her.
305. Bilbo sneaks an apple to his pony, Myrtle. He always seems to enjoy the ponies.
306. Fili is cleaning inside the bowl of his pipe.
307. Fili does a double-take when he hears Kili tell Bilbo that the noise he just heard is Orcs.
308. You can just make out Thorin rolling his eyes and shaking his head in exasperation at Kili for teasing Bilbo so.
309. Fili and Kili are inseparable, like Merry and Pippin (also jokesters) & Frodo and Sam.
310. All the Dwarves have long hair done up in various ways. Only Thorin, Fili and Kili have theirs partially pulled back and held with a silver-looking hair clip. From the back, ignoring color, the hairstyles of those three look pretty similar.
311. Thorin, Fili and Kili all have the same hair clip, probably some family similarity of grooming. Thorin raised/helped raise his nephews, so perhaps he fixed their hair in the same style he did his own. Fili has two small ones in his beard and Thorin has two low on the back area and Kili has one high up in the back.
DWARF BATTLE FOR MORIA / AZANULBIZAR
312. Many of the weapons the Company uses are also used by various dwarf foot soldiers during this battle.
1. Dwalin's big bad mace seems quite common and is used by many. His axe's 'Grasper and Keeper' are also seen in the hands of regular soldiers, though only he dual-wields them.
2. Fili's and Kili's swords are seen a lot in the hands of regular soldiers.
3. Gloin's axe is the one he passes on to Gimli. It is seen in the hands of a dwarf during the last charge. This could be proof that Gloin is part of Azanulbizar, because the axe is spotted once. But the warrior was wearing regular dwarven battle armor just like another soldier.
4. Some of the dwarf swords and sabers are also seen in the hands of orcs during the fight.
313. Thrain is seen messing up some orcs side-by-side with his father and his son for a couple of seconds during the beginning of the battle. The royal family fights back-to-back for their ancient kingdom.
314. Thorin's beard is cut short oppose to the longer beard he has in the prologue.
315. Azog is covered with gashes instead of tattoos.
316. Azog's loincloth has on it what appear to be dwarf faces, as though he has skinned the faces off dwarves he has killed and used them to make it.
317. Thorin wearing a mail-shirt during the battle
318. Dwalin head-butts one of the orcs during the battle for Moria
319. Dwalin is distinguishable by his Mohawk.
320. Azog appears to be right-handed, but it's his left arm that's cut off by Thorin.
321. After beheading Thror, Azog is holding the Dwarf King's head in one hand and a knife in the other.
322. There are runes written on the prop of King Thror's head. They quite clearly spell AZOG!
323. When Balin recounts the battle of Moria at one point he says that Azog swore to wipe out the line of Durin. When he says that, the camera stays on Kili and Fili. They are Thorin's nephews, and they are from the line of Durin.
324. After Balin finishes his tale, Thorin turns around, and all the Dwarves are standing, looking at him in reverence and wonder. You see that Balin isn't the only one who "can call him king".

326. Thorin fights Azog, loses his shield and picks up an oak branch as a shield

329. Dwalin puts his axes in the back of Bolg as the dwarves turn the battle around before the gates of Moria.
330. A dying dwarf pierced with arrows is seen being tended/comforted by another dwarf in the aftermath of the battle.
331. As Balin kneeling or crouching, and weeping, it looks like he's holding the hand of a barely-moving, and then not-moving, dwarf. So it appears he's comforting someone he knows, as that dwarf dies. Dwalin comes up right then and is likely crying over the same dwarf too. Very touching.
332. Dwalin and Balin's father dies in this battle, as does Thorin's brother.
333. Balin and Dwalin embracing tearfully on the battlefield after finding each other still alive, but the King is dead and Thráin is missing.
334. When Thorin tells Bilbo that Azog died in the mines of Moria; Balin and Gandalf look at each other as if they’re not so sure he is dead.
AZOG
335. An orc pack watches the Company from across a ravine. They had been hunting for the Dwarves, so they knew about their Quest.
336. As the orc scouts look over at the Company’s encampment, we see that there is a half moon in the sky.
337. Azog's rendezvous with the orc pack is at Amon Sûl/ Weathertop
338. Azog's severed left arm is replaced with a rod with a spike high up through his elbow and a claw to replace the hand.
339. Azog's orcs knew the Dwarves were on the move. The lead orc says, "We found the Dwarf-scum."
340. The orcs refer to the Dwarves as Dwarf-scum and the Elves as Elf-filth.
341. Azog pets his White Warg during the Weathertop scene.
342. Just before Azog kills Yazneg, he kind of strokes the other Orc's head with his right hand. So when he picks Yazneg up to throw him, Azog is using his left hand. That's the claw hand.
343. The White Warg has the same ritual scarring as Azog - two slashes above each eye and slashes on the shoulders and flanks, all evenly spaced and even lengths.
MORE COMPANY TRAVELLING
344. Bilbo's pony is named Myrtle. She's one of the Company's 2 pack ponies carrying a large canvas bag and kettle... and now a Hobbit. She's light chestnut with flaxen mane and tail; the same color as Bill in FOTR... and she likes apples.
345. Bofur is trying to smoke in the pouring rain. An optimist.
346. There is not a lot of dialogue time with the other dwarves. We literally get no dialog from Bombur, Bifur, Nori, Oin, etc.
347. Gandalf wears a grey scarf over right shoulder. It's thrown around his neck when riding in the rain and talking to Bilbo about the other wizards.
348. Gandalf says there are 5 wizards. Saruman the White is the leader, there are 2 Bluesies…but couldn't remember their names. An acknowledgement that no copyright is allowed for use of their names. And Radagast the Brown.
RADAGAST INTRO
349. Pan down to treetops … same shot as when we see Orthanc/Merry & Pippin enjoying the spoils of war on the rock wall.
350. There is an actual bird's nest in Radagast's hair... which explains the other bird product on the side of his face.
351. Radagast has mismatched shoes (not boots). On his left is the blue-ish shoes with the curled toe, and on his right is something that looks more like a brocade house slipper.
352. Sebastian the hedgehog is near death. Several animals and plants are already dead (fox, rabbit, chipmunk/squirrel, tree sap, mushrooms)
353. Radagast's House - There are some dried herbs hanging, lots of little bottles and crocks, and even some fungi (?) growing on the tree branches his house is built around.
354. There are potion jars and equipment for making potions. Two different retorts which is a device used for distillation or dry distillation of substances. Here's a crop of it from this image.
355. Radagast's attempts to save poor Sebastian the hedgehog before using his crystal: - Something out of a spoon
- A ball made of twigs or straw with small tubes of wood that Radagast used it to blow smoke on Sebastian.
- The small glass bottle with red liquid, Radagast put some on his fingertip for Sebastian to take.
4. Radagast tries to give Sebastian a small nugget of something using 2 small sticks like chopsticks.
5. Radagast is stirring something in a small wooden bowl that he taps with a wooden pestle/spoon and then listens to it.
356. Radagast tries everything to save Sebastian, but there's no change.
357. Radagast is holding little Sebastian's paw just before he says "It's not as though it's magic. . . ." That tiny little paw in the big human hand - a tender little moment
358. Radagast realizes what is killing the plants and animals are witchcraft... a dark, powerful magic.
359. When Radagast says "Witchcraft", you hear what appears to be a hint of the Necromancer/Sauron's voice.
360. As soon as Radagast realizes the sickness of the forest is because of witchcraft, 2 giant spiders attack his home.
361. Radagast braces his door with a plank of wood to block out the attacking spiders
362. Radagast pulls a blue, triangular jewel from top of his staff and uses to draw poison from the lifeless Sebastian.
363. Several mice run across the floor and up into his robes for safety.
364. **Radagast is chanting in Quenyan to save Sebastian.
365. Radagast's last word in his chant to save the hedgehog is "Andar". As soon as Sebastian comes to life, he squeaks what sounds like "Andar".
366. As Radagast completes his chant, the giant spiders run away.
367. A robin alerts Radagast of where the spiders went and leads him to the old fortress ruins of Dol Guldur.
368. Radagast speeds by rabbit sled to Dol Guldur.

THE COMPANY MAKES CAMP
370. The Farmer's homestead has scattered about: - wagon axle/wheels
- water pump (where ponies graze)
- raised garden (herbs?)
- outhouses (storage/loo)
- broken fence and gate
- a bent weathervane atop the ruined farmhouse
- a thatched roof birdhouse
371. When they set up camp at the destroyed Farmer's homestead, Thorin tells Bombur to start cooking (Bofur ends up helping), Fili & Kili to watch the ponies, and Gloin & Oin to get a fire going.
372.When Gandalf tries to convince Thorin to go to Rivendell for food, rest and advice, Thorin only rejects the advice.
373.Thorin trusts Gandalf in Bag End about Bilbo, the map and the key; but he is beginning not to trust him as they argue at the Farmer's broken homestead.
374. Thorin has his hand on the hilt of his sword the entire time he's arguing with Gandalf. Not that he'd use it, but it just subtly emphasizes how strongly he feels about regarding elves as The Enemy -- and how stubborn he is with this viewpoint.
375. Even though Thorin told Bombur to start the food, Bofur is tending to the pot of stew.
376. The Dwarves' pot used for making stew is hanging from what looks like a metal frame with an extended rod that the pot hangs from. The frame is attached to a post. Is that metal frame something they are carrying with their pot, or is it something found in the farmer's debris?
377. Bofur gives two bowls of stew to Bilbo to take to "the lads", then turns and slaps the spoon out of Bombur's hand telling him, "You've had enough!"
378. The Company has 15 shaggy ponies and one horse (for Gandalf).
379. Ponies taken when Fili, Kili, Bilbo watch: first Daisy and Bungo, then Minty and Bilbo's pony Myrtle
380. Fili see the light through the trees
381. When Bilbo and the lads are going to see what is at the light, Bilbo has left the two bowls of stew on the downed tree. He turns back to get the bowls and runs after Kili and Fili. Reminds of Sam carrying the pot & bowl of food at Weathertop when they see the Nazgul coming.
382. Instead of running back to the camp to warn Thorin and the others that the ponies are missing and Trolls have been spotted, Bilbo's Tookish side takes over once again as he follows Fili and Kili to investigate the light.
383. Fili says to Bilbo, “...hoot twice like a barn owl, once like a brown owl.”
384. Fili and Kili are up to their old tricks with Bilbo. When Kili says “It’s perfectly safe! We’ll be right behind you,” he says it with the same mock-innocence with which he delivered his lines earlier about the noises Bilbo had heard coming from heaps of bloodthirsty Orcs.
TROLL STUFF
385. Tom the Troll (loin cloth) took the ponies, including Bilbo's pony Myrtle, and one of the reasons Bilbo tried so hard to save them.
386. Bert's spoon looks like a shovel tied to a wooden branch/post. Same with William's knife. It looks like a hunk of metal tied to a handle with a leather strap.
387. The Trolls speak in thick Cockney accents.
388. William the Troll is sharpening Bert's filleting knife on a rock. You can hear the scraping metal.
389. Bert the cook is wearing an apron!
390. Bilbo hides from the Trolls like he hides from the SBs with Frodo at the birthday party. When the Troll looks over at the horses, Bilbo stands next to the post, facing away from the Troll while holding perfectly still. It works! The Troll doesn't see him standing right there partially blocked by a post.
391. When Bilbo is trying to save the ponies from the Trolls, he tries to get the ponies to quiet down as they nicker /talk to him in recognition.
392. Myrtle reaches down as if to nibble at him as Bilbo crawls along the fence to get the knife from the Troll.
393. Just as William says "Make him (Bilbo) squeal" Kili stabs him in the back of his leg and makes HIM squeal instead.
394. Kili comes running to the clearing to help Bilbo, but not Fili. He's off getting Thorin and the others.
395. The Troll is smart to toss Bilbo at Kili, which completely disarms the dwarf and the hobbit.
396. Fili has brought back help as Thorin and the rest of the dwarves come out of nowhere and attack the Trolls
397. Bilbo focuses on saving the 4 ponies, even when everyone else is fighting
398. Ori uses his slingshot to thwack a troll in the eye.
399. Oin appears to spear a troll up his backside during the troll fight and kicked him. Poor Troll.
400. Both Thorin and Dwalin are reasonably likely to punch their attackers when fighting at close range.
401. During the troll fight, a troll has Nori in his hand, and he is saved by Ori, with his slingshot. When they are fighting in goblin town, Nori returns the favor, and tosses Ori his slingshot.
402. Dwalin takes a swing at the troll and knocks some of his teeth out!
403. When they're fighting the Trolls, Ori seems to be the one continually picked up and thrown.
404. Nori attacked one of the Trolls holding Ori at one point and catches Ori another time.
405. Dwalin does what looks like an impressive move, sliding under and past a troll or two as he goes; he ends up lying on the ground. (This is a little bit after Kili has performed a similar slide.)
406. Thorin uses Dwalin’s back as a springboard to leap up onto a troll and attack it around its shoulders/head.
407. Everyone has Ori's back in the Trollshaws. Can't count of how many Dwarves rescue him.
408. The Troll fighting actually follows a narrative sequence. Part of it goes like this: Nori does something to a Troll that gets himself scooped up. Ori hits that Troll in the eye with his slingshot, which works: the Troll drops Nori, but Ori gets scooped up instead; Dwalin does his sliding, here-Thorin-use-my-back-for-a-springboard move; Thorin leaps off Dwalin's back and up at the face of the Troll with Ori, who then drops Ori as Thorin leaps back down; Thorin only has time for another slash or two before Bilbo's scooped up and the battle's over.
409. When the Trolls have Bilbo by the arms and the dwarves have to put down their weapons, Kili looks really upset about it and throws his sword down angrily. Ori has been looking at him and so he sees what Kili does so then Ori gets an angry look on his face and throws his sling shot down.
410. As the Dwarves are turning on the spit, one of them says, "Is this really necessary?"
411. When they are roasting over the Trolls' fire, Dori says, "You can't reason with them, they're half-wits!", to which Bofur says, "What does that make us?"

TROLLS' HOARD
428. Smaug and the Trolls have come down from the North.
429. Most of the Dwarves do not go into the Trolls' cave.
430. Debris scattered in the Troll's cave are crates, baskets, pumpkins, armor, weapons, etc.
431. As Gandalf and the Dwarves enter the Troll's cave, the odor has the Dwarves retching and moaning and holding their noses... until they see the gold. Suddenly, smells don't matter!
432. A rack in on the wall (on the left when they enter the cave) has body parts stuck on it-- a hand is sticking out. There is also a corpse just inside the door when they enter. A woman's head is on the rack as well.
433. Bofur, Gloin and Nori bury a chest of gold coins, goblets, and treasure in the troll's cave. Dwalin looks on unimpressed. Old Bilbo tells Frodo his one small chest still smells of Trolls.
434. Dwalin (standing guard) also looks on and listens to Thorin Gandalf talking when finding swords. Again, seems not altogether happy about it.
435. While Gandalf is looking through baskets and debris on one side of the cave, Thorin find the trove of weapons.
436. There's a sword of Rohan amongst the troll´s treasure
437. Thorin hands Gandalf Glamdring and is holding Orcrist for himself.
438. Gandalf knows the swords were made by high-elves of the first age of Gondolin.
439. The runes on the sheath of Orcrist are the same runes and pattern on the blade. They match/fit when Orcrist is sheathed.
440. When the Company is outside the Troll Cave, Bifur is trying to give Kili an animal skull with antlers while keeping the golden cup for himself.

442. The music playing when Gandalf gives Bilbo his sword is the same music from LotR when Gandalf talks to Frodo in Moria about "so do all who live to see such times".
443. Sting does not have its inscription yet, just a bit of curly decoration. The curly bit forms one edge of the inscription (presumably put on by the Elves in Rivendell on Bilbo's return journey).

RADAGAST
445. As Radagast speeds into the clearing, he’s crying “Thieves! Fire! Murder!” ... which, in the book, is what Smaug declares when he realizes a piece of his treasure is missing.
446. Radagast seemed to know Gandalf was in the area when Radagast says he was looking for Gandalf.
447. While Radagast is speaking to Gandalf, Fili and Bilbo are almost face-to-face with one of the bunnies, who is sitting up tall (and nearly half their height) and apparently staring them down.
448. Radagast is much younger than Gandalf and Saruman. Their beards and hair are white or grey. Radagast’s beard and hair are both mostly brown.

462. Radagast sees the Necromancer taking shape again and growing in power.

464. As Radagast runs from Dol Guldur, the rabbits are lying around except for one that hears Radagast coming and thumps his hind foot on the ground as a warning to the others.

467. Gandalf wipes off his pipe with his beard to let Radagast take a puff on and clear his mind.

469. When Radagast exhales the smoke from Gandalf's pipe, you can suddenly hear birds chirping. Possibly the ones under his hat? Or is it his reaction to the weed... like a cartoon *tweet, tweet, tweet* to denote being a bit loopy?
470. Gandalf sticks his pipe in his belt to take the wrapped blade from Radagast.
471. There are several offhand references to places in Middle-earth -- Ered Luin, the Ettenmoors, Frogmorton, Mt. Gundabad, Rhosgobel, the Lone-lands, the Bruinen, etc.
472. While Radagast is speaking to Gandalf, there's quick shot that shows part of the company. Fili and Bilbo (?) -- are almost face-to-face with one of the bunnies, who is sitting up tall (and nearly half their height) and apparently staring them down.
473. While Gandalf and Radagast talk, the rest of the Company is spread about in the background. Bifur stands alone like a sentinel; Balin is with Fili and Kili; Dwalin is with Thorin; Bombur and Ori are together (they're sort of the odd ones out in the company). Even when in the background, the Dwarves are still giving us insights into their characters.
474. Kili is almost always next to Thorin when they're under threat or attack.
475. When the wargs attack, the first two go straight for Thorin.
476. Thorin kills the first warg, and Kili shoots the second one coming from behind Thorin.
477. Radagast draws off the warg pack and riders with his sled pulled by 12 Rhosgobel rabbits.

479. The orcs are riding those wargs with no tack. They grab the hair on the back of their necks, but how do they control them?
480. Every time Radagast is forced to turn by oncoming wargs, he ends up heading towards the Company again.
481. Thorin carries Orcrist on his back with the hilt over his right shoulder because the sword and sheath are too long for him to wear at his side.
482. Dwalin holds back/protects Bilbo with his arm, while they are hiding from the warg above.
483. Since their fight with the Trolls, Bofur protects Bilbo often during the Quest.
484. As they huddle below the rock with the Orc and Warg over them, Thorin looks at Kili (“You!”), looks pointedly down at Kili’s bow (“Use that thing!”), and nods his head up at the Orc (“NOW!”).
485. The dwarves have a tendency to refer to each other as "Brother". One of them cries, "Run Brothers!" and again at the very end when they are fleeing Azog.
486. When the Company is surrounded by wargs and warg riders, Dori is swinging bolas (weighted balls connected by a chain) over his head ready for a fight.
487. Bilbo holds both his staff and sword in his right hand as he slides down the rock into the tunnel.
488. Kili is lethal with his bow and arrow (like Legolas). The warg-riders hold off until Thorin calls Kili to retreat, then the wargs move in.
489. Fili reaches the hidden passage early, but doesn't jump down until Kili joins him.
490. Thorin makes sure everyone else escapes into the hidden path before sliding down himself.
491. The horn that the dwarves hear as they huddle in the cavern is the same horn Legolas hears in Helm's Deep and says, "That is no orc horn."
492. Thorin pulls the arrow out of the dead orc, examines it and throws it down in disgust when he realizes it is elven just like Legolas examines and throws down a goblin's arrow in LotR's Moria.
493. As the dwarves travel through the hidden pass to Rivendell, Bombur stops to check out some lichen / moss / plants (perhaps to see if they're edible).
494. In the book Gandalf was looking for the moss on the stones to find his way to Rivendell. In the movie, when the Dwarves are going through the small secret passage/chasm to Rivendell, Bombur pauses to grab at a bit of moss (possibly wondering if it's edible) before Bifur shoves him along. This might be a nod to the moss on the stones to Rivendell.
495. Bombur getting wedged in the narrow passage leading to the hidden valley and Bifur dislodging him with a push from behind.
496. The narrow, rocky passage the Company travels through is carved through the top of a long cliff that leads to Rivendell.
497. The book says that both Fili and Kili carry a bag of tools and a spade. Fili in the movie is carrying a large shovel (charitably, you might could call it a spade) between the Trollshaws and Goblin-town.
RIVENDELL - No small degree of charm...
498. Thorin has his oak-branch shield when they're on the bridge crossing into Rivendell, and also as they're on the rocky path leaving it.
499. Thorin's oak shield has metal tips on some of the edges.
500. Thorin thumps his axe on the rock when he realizes the company has arrived at Rivendell
501. Bilbo's sense of wonder and awe shows when Gandalf announces to the dwarves that they've entered the Secret Valley of Imladris and mentions the Last Homely House. Bilbo finishes his phrase with "Rivendell." The look on his face at that moment was a rare example where Bilbo "let his Baggins' guard down" and revealed his 'Took Side'.
502. The dwarves' gear is messed up. What looks like either Fili's cloak or blanket is dragging on the ground behind him.
503. Bombur has a kettle hanging from his backpack.
504. Balin has a broken strap on his backpack.
505. There are Elven guards on the stairway and atop the tower watching the Company as they come to Rivendell. Other elves standing and walking around on various porches and balconies.
506. The Elven Guard statues at the entrance to Rivendell are looking slightly inward and down, as if watching whoever may be passing by, instead of looking straight out and forward like the Argonath and most of the statues of men... and dwarves.
507. Lindir comes to greet Gandalf and the Company.
508. When Lindir comes down the stairs, Kili has a look of wonder and awe on his face - perhaps even fascination. Even when they are encircled by the Elves on horseback, while he has a look of a bit of fear and concern, there is still that look of wonder.
509. Lindir said to Gandalf that they had heard the Company crossed into the Valley. Did Radagast send word?
510. Some of the Company have piled their gear in the center of the landing; but are still hold their weapons.
511. Dwalin uses his war hammer as a leaning post pretty much every time he’s standing still.
512. Thorin whispers to Dwalin next to him to, "Stay sharp." Obviously he's thrown off by not having singing Elves to greet them.
513. Dwalin has a familiarity with Thorin that none of the others have (except maybe Balin). Dwalin also knows where Thorin has been before Bag End and no one else seems to. Dwalin's the other one (besides Kili) who's almost always next to Thorin, especially when they're fighting.
514. When Elrond and the other Elves ride in at Rivendell, the Dwarves go into their defensive huddle.
515. When the elves on horseback charge into the Rivendell courtyard, Bofur pulls Bilbo to "safety" into the center of the Dwarves, Dwalin pulls Ori back and Dori maneuvers Ori behind him, and Bombur shoves Bifur in front of him.
516. Nori growls at the riders/elves as they circle around the dwarves.
517. As Elrond and the Elves return from hunting orcs, Elrond is the first to ride up and encircle the Company.
518. Elrond is wearing criss-cross purple armor.
519. Elrond is carrying Hadhafang when he is in his amour.
520. Gandalf speaks Elvish to Elrond, and later to Galadriel.
521. An Elf soldier steps forward when Elrond dismounts and takes his horse.
522. Elrond gives Lindir an orc blade. Its hilt is shaped like a fist and the top of the sheath has fur around it.
523. Elrond notes that the orcs they attacked are from the South (while the Trolls and Smaug came from the North).
524. When Thorin gives his response to Elrond "he made no mention of you," Nori gives a snigger in the background.
525. Elrond's elvish was not directed at the dwarves (as they assume) even though he's looking at the them. It's a directive to the other Elves to prepare for guests. As the dwarves are busy being insulted about it, elves can be seen heading up the stairway behind Elrond to carry out his orders.
526. Elrond is amused when the Dwarves are antagonized by what he said to them in elvish and Gloin is insulted and realizes he's just invited them to dinner.
527. When Gandalf tells Gloin Elrond is offering them "food", Bombur is at the very back and if you look at him his eyes get really wide and he gets excited and starts poking the other dwarfs.
528. Bilbo looks confused, overwhelmed and jostled when the Dwarves are first quick to be insulted then discuss and accept the invite to dinner.
529. It’s late in the day when the Company reaches Rivendell, dusk moves in as they eat and it's dark when they’re having their cookout.
530. The Company has not slept since they camped that first night when Balin tells the story of Thorin... at least we haven't seen them sleep.
531. The Dwarves sit for dinner at two tables while Elrond, Thorin and Gandalf sit together at another taller one.
532. The Company joins Elrond for dinner at the same place the Council of Elrond was held.
533. The Dwarves aren't impressed with the Elves' idea of a party. Ori and Dwalin are the most vocal: Ori, "I don't eat green food. Do they have any chips?" and Dwalin, "Where's the meat?"
534. At Elrond's table, Gandalf had a nice large glass of red wine! Unlike that at Bag End.
535. As Elrond examines Glamdring and Orcrist, we can see that Orcrist's sheath has oak-looking wood at the top and on the body of the sheath... supporting Thorin's identification as Oakenshield.
536. Elrond shows his support of the dwarves when he offers them food (instead of insult) and when he gives Orcrist ("made by my kin") to Thorin and says, "...May it serve you well..." like a blessing. Later, he does not try to dissuade Thorin from going to the mountain after reading the map.
537. The handle of Orcrist is a dragon tooth.
538. Glamdring belonged to the King of Gondolin.
539. Swords are named by the great deeds they do. It's fascinating to know the deeds Bilbo's letter opener will "do" to earn the name "Sting".
540. **When Bilbo looks at the Shards of Narsil, the cloth they rest upon is different than when Frodo was in Rivendell.
541. **Bilbo seems startled when he see the Ring in the mural of the Necromancer.
542. **The Dwarves enjoy the Fountain of Rivendell and finally have a bath.
543. **In Rivendell at the fountain, is that Bifur towel-snapping Nori?
544. **Bilbo prefers to be alone and chooses to investigate Rivendell.
545. **Bilbo is swept away by the beauty and freedom of Rivendell.
546. **Bilbo is still alone when he overhears Gandalf and Elrond talking, but soon realizes Thorin is there, too.
547. **Thorin hears Gandalf & Elrond talk about Thror's illness. Later, Thorin hears Bilbo and Bofur talking about the dwarves having no home. Each time, his is disturbed and goes quiet.
548. The Dwarves have stripped down to their skivvies, washed their clothes, and has them hanging all over the place.
549. Kili is sitting on sky-blue clothing of some sort when he's lounging in his long-johns near the furniture-campfire in Rivendell. A reference to his hood color (which is just blue, not sky-blue) in the book.
550. Nori is hanging up (and sniffing) laundry on a line in the background and several of the dwarves are in their long underwear/long johns. Most are still wearing their boots.
551. When Nori sniffs the hanging laundry and starts complaining about something (the laundry, presumably) being smelly. Maybe they forgot the soap. OR he is noticing the effects of elven soap on dwarvish laundry. Can't you just imagine the Company setting out on the next stage of their trip smelling sweetly of flowers
552. A fire has been made from broken furniture that the Dwarves use for cooking meat, except for Bifur's silverbeet (green food).
553. Even in Rivendell, the Dwarves know how to set up their own camp and have a party.
554. The Dwarves are merrier than the Elves.
555. Bilbo and Balin are present when Gandalf, Thorin and Elrond talk about Thorin's map. Bilbo and Balin are not with the Wizard, Dwarf-king and Elf-lord during dinner.
556. Elrond is asked for help translating the map, but Balin does not trust Elrond. However, Thorin knows he must to get the message of the map.
557. When Elrond, Gandalf, Bilbo, Thorin, and Balin are discussing whether Thorin will show Elrond the map, a suit of elven armor is in the background. It looks similar to what Elrond wore to the final Battle of the Last Alliance
558. Gandalf covers the real reason the Company wants help with the map when Elrond asks about it. Thorin looks gratefully at Gandalf.
559. Elrond takes the map to the crystal pedestal and lays it on the surface. The crescent moon shines through the waterfalls which illuminates the crystal pedestal and shows the moon-runes on the map.
560. When the moon letters are revealed on the map, they appear below the image of the mountain.
561. There's a huge Elvish figure carved out of the rock wall behind the Moon Rune Reader platform.
562. Balin is the one who exposes the true Quest of the Dwarves as he lets slip how the message on the map will help them get into Erebor.
563. Elrond does not try to dissuade them when he learns the truth. He simply directs Gandalf to those waiting for them to have a meeting.
WHITE COUNCIL
564. Gandalf freezes when he first hears Saruman's voice behind him, then closes his eyes, takes a breath and fixes a false smile on his face as he turns around, all with Elrond looking on with a bemused, sympathetic smile as if he knew precisely how Gandalf would react.
565. It's a very weary Gandalf at sunrise, looking as though he'd been questioned and called to defend his actions all night long.
566. When Gandalf first greets Galadriel and the council meeting is starting, it's nighttime and the moon is out. In the next moment, his hands over his face, he looks tired and stressed, and the sun is coming up.
567. Gandalf speaks in Elvish and also telepathically to Galadriel, “Age may have changed me… But not so the Lady of Lorien.”
568. Galadriel is no long wearing the blue/grey cover. She's wearing a shimmering white gown with a low cowl, and she's moved the brooch from the blue covering to the dress. Elrond has also removed his cloak.
569. Galadriel's fingernails are much the same as in Fellowship! When she gives Frodo the Light of Earendil that they were quite round and prettily coloured.
570. Saruman's staff is leaning up against the pillar behind his right shoulder where he sits at the table.
571. Galadriel knows Gandalf suspects there's truth of the Necromancer's return, there's a danger with Smaug, and that he has plans with the Dwarves to return to the Mountain.
572. When Saruman tries to divert Gandalf and minimize his fears, Galadriel insists Gandalf be allowed to speak.
573. As Gandalf starts to speak, Galadriel silently circles the room while he talks. Is she reading everyone?
574. Galadriel's power is evident even when she does little. She also seems to shimmer - not just her dress but her whole being.
575. Saruman saying that Radagast was suffering from an excessive consumption of mushrooms was a nod to his comment about Gandalf's love the Hobbit pipeweed dulling his mind.
576. Gandalf agreed that he once believed the Necromancer to be a mortal man and nothing but a legend.
577. Saruman tries to dissuade the others from believing there danger with the Necromancer, "What proof is there..."
578. Saruman is so busy with his own thoughts and speech that he isn't even aware that there's a whole conversation going on right around him. Neither does Elrond.
579. When Galadriel has circled around to Gandalf, she stops, sensing he's got something from Mirkwood. She is fearful and aghast at the sight of the blade.
580. When Gandalf brings out the wrapped Morgul blade, there's a heavy-thud as he places it on the table. An ominous sound like when the Ring falls in Goblin-town, and on the floor of Bag End in LotR.
581. Galadriel knows the blade Radagast had belongs to the Witch-king and she knows its history.
582. Even with the proof of the Morgul blade, Saruman continues to try and divert the others from believing there's a threat from Dol Guldur.
583. The Witch-king of Angmar is the one who later injures Frodo.
584. Elrond seemed to agree with Saruman until the Morgul blade was revealed. Then he stops his apprehension of the threat of war and the Necromancer's existence.
585. Gandalf's Staff is leaning up against the doorway to the right of where he's seated. You can see it behind Elrond when he's looking at the Morgul blade.
586. Galadriel and Gandalf communicate about what's really happening.
587. Galadriel knows Gandalf is up to something. Nothing gets past Galadriel and she realizes Gandalf's collaboration with the dwarves and their plans to go to the Mountain. She smiles her approval and enjoys Gandalf's plotting.
588. Saruman begins to speak about restraining the Dwarves from their Quest when Lindir announces that they're gone.
589. The Company departs at sunrise.
590. As the Dwarves leave Rivendell by the pass the entered from, Thorin tells Balin to lead them since he knows the paths into the Wild from Rivendell. Possibly from accompanying Thror in the past? Elrond said he knew Thror.
591. Galadriel talks about Bilbo as the Halfling.
592. Dawn shines on Gandalf's face as he talks about Bilbo with Galadriel.
593. When Galadriel and Gandalf are talking, there's an Elven Guard stationed on the balcony of a tower just below them.
594. Galadriel assures Gandalf... "You are not alone."
595. The Dwarves travel from left to right as the Fellowship did in FotR. Travelling from West to the East.
596. The Company walks near waterfalls after leaving Rivendell, as the Frodo and Sam did when the first set out from the Shire.
597. The heroic use of the Misty Mountain theme while the Company walked along the crest of a mountain ridge was a nod to the Fellowship walking over the crest of a ridge to a heroic version of the Fellowship theme.
598. Thorin, for all his gruffness, was constantly watching out and taking responsibility for the others
STONE GIANT
599. Kili pulls Bofur away from falling stones in the Stone Giants scene.
600. After the Stone Giants start to fight, the Company realizes they are on the legs of one of the Giants and are separated as the Giant stands... leaving Fili and some of the Dwarves on one leg and Kili and the rest on the other.
601. Kili has one foot on each stone giant leg. As the stone giant legs separate, his feet start to separate as well and he goes to the left leg.
602. Fili, on the right leg, says to Kili, "Grab my hand", but the giant moved too fast to allow this.

604. Dwalin holds back/protects Bilbo with his arm when they are in the middle of the stone giants thunder battle.
605. When the Stone Giant starts moving, Dwalin grabs hold of Ori and Bilbo.
606. When the Stone Giants are fighting, one has its head knocked off; Fili, Bofur, Bilbo, Dwalin, Bombur, and Ori are still on the legs of that Giant and are dropped onto the rock-wall path when it crashes as it falls forward before dropping into the chasm.
607. When it appears that the Dwarves on the stone giant leg are smashed and killed, Thorin screams "Kili" a couple times.
608. When Bilbo is hanging from the cliff. Ori grabs his hand just as he loses his grip. Poor Bofur tries to grab Bilbo, but can't get to him. That's when Thorin jumps down and pulls our Bilbo to safety before slipping himself. Then Dwalin reaches down and saves Thorin.
609. **At Bag End, Thorin says he will not responsible for Bilbo's fate, but he risks his life to save Bilbo from falling after the Stone Trolls' battle.
610. After the Thunder Battle and Bilbo is hauled up off the edge of the cliff, you can see Bifur in the background using sign language to communicate to some of the other dwarves
611. Azog tracking the Company's scent through the mountain passes, the White Warg is sniffing out their trail... and Azog is sniffing from on top of the Warg, too.
GOBLIN-TOWN
612. Bofur not happy to take the first watch in the cave, and Fili notices this.
613. Just before the dwarves tumble through the trap doors in Goblin town, you see that Fili has a rolled up blanket and what looks like a blue folded blanket under his head as well as a blanket laid under him, yet Kili, who is sleeping next to him, has nothing under him or over him except what looks like a blanket under his lower legs.
614. Kili's theme color seems to be blue but Fili's is a burnt red-and the blanket under Fili's head is blue but I believe the blanket under his body is red.
615. While they are in the cave, before they fall into Goblin Town, Bifur is picking at his fingers.
616. Bilbo straps on his sword, buckles it on his right hip and packs up to leave. He’s the only one wearing his sword when they fall into the Goblin trap.
617. When Bilbo is walking past Bofur intending to go back to Rivendell, Bofur - who is on watch - is biting his fingernails.
618. During the lovely exchange between Bofur and Bilbo in the Goblins’ “front porch”, you can see flashes of light from lightning – clearly the storm is still raging outside, yet Bilbo is intending to head back to Rivendell anyways. Brave (or foolish?) Hobbit!
619. Thorin overhears Bofur and Bilbo talking about the Dwarves not belonging anywhere... a conversation that drives the reality of that home for all of them.
620. The cave floor seams appear and the floor's trap doors open.
621. The Goblin-town trapdoor chute ends in a rock outcrop that looks like a goblin face, while the rock shelf and metal cage below it looks like an arm with a clawed hand at the end of it - so when the Company falls down into it, it looks like a goblin vomiting into its hand.
622. Bilbo lands on top of the pile of Dwarves like Frodo did when the hobbits rolled down the hill onto the road.
623. **When the goblins overwhelm the dwarves as they first fall in the trap in Goblin-town, Dori yells look out!
624. **When Dori yells, Fili is sitting up, and he turns and pulls Kili up from a lying down position next to him before turning back toward the goblins.
625. **A second later, Fili and Thorin are standing in front of Kili at the back furthest away from the goblins, with the other dwarves in front of them.
626. **Kili reaches for Bilbo to pull him back behind his brother and uncle, but Bilbo is snatched too quickly, and Fili and Thorin back up with Kili behind them. Another Kili protective of Bilbo, Fili and Thorin protective of Kili moment .
627. **On the bridge leading away from the cage, Fili keeps looking back at Kili, who alternates between looking at Thorin behind him and Fili in front of him.
628. All of the Dwarves' weapons fall into the Goblin trap and are carried by their hosts to the Great Goblin.
629. Bilbo loses his backpack, but still has his sword... letter-opener.
630. Just like Sam and Frodo escaping from the Mordor Orcs during a skirmish in the troops, Nori notices that Bilbo drops down and slips away during a skirmish between the goblins and dwarves started by Dwalin.
631. It's so hobbity for Bilbo to drop and hide in the open when the goblins are herding the Dwarves to the Great Goblin.
632. You can see Nori looking back at Bilbo again as the dwarves are driven on by the goblins.
633. Bilbo bravely draws his sword and follows the captured dwarves and goblin army.
634. When Bilbo starts following the captured Dwarves and goblins, you can see what looks like a metal tub or trough below the bridge he's on with a fire burning inside.
635. Bilbo has his first fight with Sting when a goblin stops him on the walkway. He does a great job of blocking the goblin's sword and fighting back with no training.
636. Bilbo can take a hit. The goblin he's fighting gives him a sound punch to the face, but Bilbo isn't affected.
637. The goblin Bilbo fights jumps up on his back the same way Gollum jumped up on Frodo at Sammath Naur.
638. When Bilbo and the Goblin fall into the depths, you see Bilbo grab for a dangling rope. You hear the "vreet" as it slips through his hands.
639. When Bilbo falls into the abyss after fighting the goblin, he hits one of the suspended walkways and it breaks. It's the rope from that bridge he grabs to try and stop from falling.
640. The Great Goblin's throne is made from an old bed, positioned vertically, strapped to a boulder. There is also a hole in the "seat" that leads to a bucket, which doubles as a toilet.
641. The Great Goblin uses the smallest goblins as a footstool... or as couriers.
642. The Great Goblin has a ram's skull scepter - or is it? It has tusks in addition to the curly horns.
643. There's a pile of skeletons on a little cart next to his throne - remains of a meal or snacks?
644. These goblins are the only orcs in the film that speak common tongue.
645. The Great Goblin never blinks, except once he does a sort of half squint. It doesn't look as though he has eyelids...not normal ones that can cover his eyeballs.

647. As the Dwarves are being herded to the Great Goblin, his landing is well-lit by a chandelier of several flames.

650. There's a look between Bombur and Bofur when they're being held captive before the Goblin King just after he asks what they're doing in those parts.

658. Great Goblin names Glamdring as Beater; the Foe-hammer, bright as daylight
659. Gandalf's power is unleashed as he blasts with the force to lay everyone out, like Sauron at the Battle of the Last Alliance.
660. The Dwarves toss weapons up in the air and over their heads to each other to arm themselves quickly.
661. When the Dwarves are throwing weapons to each other in Goblin-town, someone throws a war hammer to Ori. He catches it, but the momentum causes him to bend slightly backwards and the hammer hits the goblin behind him. Looks like that same backwards-over-the-head trick worked later when he was being chased by the warg.
662. Nori is lying on his back holding the sheathed Orcrist and calls out "Thorin!" just in time for Thorin to take Orcrist from it's sheath and deflect the great goblins skull-club.
663. Bombur fights off a Goblin by belly-butting it.
664. Of all weapons that he could have chosen to arm himself, Bombur picks a large ladle!!!
665. As the dwarves start to race away from in front of the Great Goblin’s throne, Ori catches something that I think was thrown by Nori. It looks like it’s his slingshot.
666. Dwalin cuts a railing loose in the goblin caves and goes "ramming speed!" down the walkway sweeping goblins off the bridge left and right
667. Some of the dwarves lose their weapons in goblin town. Bofur loses his mattock and obtains an orc axe. Nori loses his staff/mace and seems to be carrying an orc sword from that point on. Ori still has his slingshot, but he is carrying Dwalin's war hammer all the way through goblin town and until they climb the trees.
RIDDLES IN THE DARK
668. We see Gollum's eye-shine as he approaches the fallen goblin.
669. Gollum's hair is darker, skin is lighter, and he has more muscle than in LotR.
670. There are no scars on Gollum's back. He gets those in Mordor after he leaves.
671. Gollum carries the Ring in a small pouch on his right hip.
672. When Gollum drops the ring.....it "crashes" to the stones with a LOUD rumble
673. The rubbery, large mushrooms break Bilbo's fall and saves him from injury.
674. The mushrooms make a squishy sound as Bilbo gets up; it's a squidgy watery sound.
675. Luckily for Bilbo, when he falls down through the goblin cave, Sting falls separately but lands close enough for Bilbo to pick up.

680. Since Bilbo is holding his sword, he picks up the Ring with his left hand and absent-mindedly puts it in his vest left pocket as he hears Gollum in the distance.
681. Sting lights Bilbo's way as he follows Gollum to the waters edge of his lake.
682. Bilbo hears Gollum with the orc he has dragged away, and as he advances toward the sound he suddenly sees his sword glowing bright blue and immediately points it as far down as he can without sheathing it, realizing that it will give him away.
683. The outcrop of rock where Gollum has dragged the goblin looks the same as his first scene in FotR, but the mirror image.
684. Gollum sings a song that has the same tune as the one he sings at the Forbidden Pool.
685. Gollum is singing one of the book's Riddles: Alive without breath, As cold as death; Never thirsty, ever drinking, All in mail never clinking. –The answer to this riddle is fish!
686. Bilbo's quick to hide the glow of Sting when he sees Gollum on the outcrop in the center of the lake.

688. Sting stops glowing blue when the goblin dies; which tells Bilbo in this way that Gollum is capable of killing, and that Gollum is not an orc/goblin.

692. Bilbo quickly catches on that there are 2 creatures within Gollum. He whispers to Smeagol that he knows he's very good at games and that he (Bilbo) wants to play. He whispers this to Smeagol, and Smeagol whispers back as they both hide from Gollum's presence.
693. Bilbo says "lets have a game of riddles, just between us". Like he's talking to a child. And how Gollum looks child-like when Bilbo tells him that he's very good at riddles.
694. Smeagol agrees to play the Riddle Game with Bilbo, but Gollum soon takes over.
695. Bilbo knows how to play for time with Smeagol/Gollum the same way he kept the Trolls busy.

So this 'Lost?' quickly becomes 'Lost!' when he realizes that his precious is missing - it was a great transition.
708. When Bilbo sees Gollum is raging after he realizes the Ring is missing, Bilbo's hand/sword is shaking as he tries to hold Gollum off.
709. **When Gollum realizes Bilbo has the Ring and says he stole it, he's got stringy saliva between his teeth and lips.
710. When Gollum falls apart realizing he's lost the Ring, Bilbo realizes that the Ring belongs to Gollum. You can see the panic and fear in Bilbo's face as he holds the ring behind his back and tries to back away from Gollum.
711. When Gollum throws a rock at Bilbo, Bilbo blocks and knocks it away with his sword. He really does have a great instinct and reflexes for using a sword considering he's never had any training or experience. [Unless we see a Boromir-esque lesson in the extended dvd! Who would give that lesson?]
712. Bilbo's running away from Gollum with the same music that segues into the Goblin King's song as he's about to torture the dwarves
713. Gollum's eyes glow as he hunts for Bilbo.
714. Bilbo cannot defend himself against Gollum as he struggles to get unstuck. His sword is in his right hand on the other side of the opening.
715. Pops off 4 of the 5 buttons on his vest. Only the top button that remains. Later, when Bilbo takes off the ring and joins the company...he has buttoned his vest.
716. After Bilbo's vest buttons pop off, his waistcoat is left open.
717. When Bilbo bursts through the opening in the wall, the Ring flies into the air and slips onto the middle finger of his outstretched left hand... just as it did when Frodo wore the Ring for the first time.
BACK IN GOBLIN-TOWN
718. As the Dwarves and Gandalf race across the suspended bridges of Goblin-town, one of the goblins is knocked over the side and emits the Wilhelm Scream (after Dwalin uses a bridge rail to sweep goblins off the bridge).
719. Gandalf holds his staff and sword through Goblin-town and when facing the Great Goblin the same way he did when facing the Balrog.
720. From overhead, we see Oin fighting the goblins on a platform between bridges wielding a long staff or iron-quarterstaff, twirling it all around him as he turns in circles and knocking goblins left and right.
721. Balin turns in circles, like Oin, hitting and knocking goblins off as he artfully swings his sword.
722. Gandalf's sword and staff are flying as he spins and pivots taking out goblins as fast as they come at him.
723. Thorin’s fighting style, at least post-Azanulbizar, appears to have far more flair and panache than anyone else’s; tough warrior Dwalin is fierce but business-like, and while most of the others come across as superb fighters, I don’t think they can match those two.
724. Balin showed even more sword skill and flair than Thorin did. During a brief shot during the Goblin Town escape, Balin was shown doing some rapid blade flourishes (moulinets, to be technical) during combat. Balin is a fighter who relies the most on skill and finesse, in contrast to Dwalin who relies on muscle and brute strength.

726. Bofur loses his mattock at some point during the escape and uses an Orc two handed axe instead.
727. Nori loses his mace and replaces it with an orc sword.

729. Kili shows the great reflexes as he block arrows with his sword... he looks surprised
730. Gandalf knocks a giant boulder from the cavern roof that rolls ahead of them bowling over the enemy.
731. After Gandalf defeats the Great Goblin, the wooden bridge the Company is standing on gives way and rides down into the cavern like a toboggan.
732. When the Dwarves have their big fall, the portion of the bridge they are standing on keeps hitting things that slow it as it goes down. It really wedges a few times and slows their fall so they make the distance without getting hurt.
733. Gollum and Bilbo come to the Goblins' back door just as Gandalf and the Dwarves run through and escape into the sunlight.
734. Bilbo knows he can't cry out to the Company without giving himself away to Gollum who is blocking his escape.
735. Just as in the book, Bilbo prepares to kill Gollum and escape, but pity for the wretched creature with tears in its eyes that stops him.
736. When Bilbo is trying to work out how to pass Gollum, and Gollum is just sitting there, looking bereft at the lost of his Precious, you can actually see a tear roll down Gollum's cheek. ("It was pity that stayed Bilbo's hand.....")
737. Gollum hears Bilbo as he steps back and prepares to jump. Kicking Gollum as Bilbo makes his jump saves the hobbit.
738. You can see Bilbo's shadow on the wall when he leaves Gollum's cave, though he is still invisible, just like in the book.
THE COMPANY ESCAPES
739. The sun is out when the Company escapes the Goblins' realm and run out the other side of the Misty Mountains
740. The sun is still out when Bilbo runs out, but it is quickly setting as Bilbo catches up with them.
741. The Company entered the mountain through a bare cliff rock wall; the other side of the mountain was grassy, tree-covered and a steep, but manageable slope.
742. Nori's hair gets more and more disheveled as they go through their adventures.
743. Thorin carries the oaken shield so well you don't even notice it's there! But it is. It's slung on his left side as they're running from the Orcs/Wargs before Rivendell; its there when they leave Rivendell; and he's got it when they escape Goblin-town.
744. When they stop for the head-count after escaping Goblin-town and discover Bilbo missing, Kili looks wildly around for Bilbo – but is looking at the ground, as if Bilbo might be a lost bag or package that someone dropped.
745. Gandalf and a few of the dwarves are obviously happy to see Bilbo alive and well, but Thorin (and it sounds like Dwalin talking) at least still has reservations about the hobbit.
746. When Bilbo catches up with the Company after their escape, he buttons up his one remaining button (second from the top) just before stepping out from behind the tree and declares he hasn't gone back home.
747. Gandalf sees Bilbo slip the Ring in his vest right pocket.
748. Threads are sticking out of Bilbo's vest where his buttons had popped off.
749. Bilbo understands why he came on this Quest. After talking with Bofur about not having a home and Bofur's reaction, he knows and so says to Thorin that their home was taken from them, and that he will help them get their home back if he can. Bilbo isn't going for treasure, but for love of home. He tells Thorin: "I miss my books, my chair, my garden. That's where I belong. You don't have one. It was taken from you; but I will help you take it back if I can."
750. After Bilbo held his speech about 'home', Gandalf has a rather peculiar look on his face. As if he was thinking "See? I told you so. Haven't I picked a fine burglar?!"
751. When Bilbo talks about helping the Dwarves take their home back, it looks like this is the first time they all so poignantly feel their homelessness
OUT OF THE FRYING PAN
752. As the wargs charge the Company, one is hot on Ori's tail when the Dwarf brings his mallet (?) up over his head and hits the beast on its head.
753. The wargs' eyes glow like Gollum's.
754. Nori steps on Dwalin's head to boost himself into a tree.
755. Kili jumps and spins on the branch of the tree. Then he reaches down to help Fili up.
756. Oin hoists Balin into a tree.
757. Beneath the Fir trees Bifur saves Bilbo by taking out a Warg (headed right for him) with a rock just as Gandalf yells "Climb!" the second time.
758. Bilbo is still holding his sword as he climbs the tree and hangs on as the trees start to topple
759. Gandalf again uses a moth to send for the eagle's help.
760. Gandalf is in a tree by himself... except for the moth.
761. If you listen carefully, each time one of the dwarves jumps onto a tree, a theme similar to the 1970s cartoon's melody of "Fifteen birds" plays.
762. When all looks bleak, Gandalf grabs a pinecone, uses his staff and breath to ignite it, and throws it into the pack of wargs.
763. Gandalf lights the pinecone by blowing sparks through the head of his staff that's shaped like a flame.
764. Gandalf growls has he throws that first fiery pinecone.
765. Gandalf lights 2 more pinecones and tosses them down to Fili and others.
766. Bilbo uses Fili's pinecone to light one of his own.
767. All of the Dwarves are throwing burning cones at the warg pack. Everyone has a chance to throw a fiery cone.
768. A detail in the book that was followed perfectly: after Gandalf and company throw the pinecones into the Wargs and set things on fire, the book says, “The dwarves and Bilbo shouted and cheered.” That is EXACTLY what they do!
769. As the trees fall, the dwarves and Bilbo jump from tree to tree until they're all in Gandalf's tree, the last one standing at the edge of the cliff.
770. Dori always says "Mr. Gandalf," even when he's about to plunge to his death from the pine tree.
771. Kili is trying to help Dori when Ori slips from his branch and grabs Dori's leg.
772. Azog talks about the smell of fear the same way Gothmog did at Pelennor.
773. When Azog delivers his "Do you smell it?" line, he briefly runs his claw hand through the White Warg's fur.
774. Azog sees Thorin and taunts him of how Thrain reeked of fear... revealing that Azog had, indeed, captured King Thrain.
775. Thorin doesn't need to understand what Azog is saying - Thorin is not reacting to what he says at all. After Azog does his little taunting speech, all Thorin says is "It cannot be!"; he's still busy trying to get his head around the fact that Azog is still alive
776. Thorin is overcome with anger and revenge. He rises up in the flames and walks down the trunk of the fallen tree to fight Azog... accompanied by the LotR Amon Sûl Nazgul music.
777. Thorin is carrying an oaken branch as a shield on his left arm and carries Orcrist down to battle Azog.
778. Thorin is about to be killed by Azog's orc minion when Bilbo tackles and kills the orc then stands guard over Thorin.
779. Bilbo's new "hero moment" of rescuing Thorin. Bilbo has been dealing with his fear throughout the Quest. When he rescues Thorin, he is overcoming his fear in that moment.
780. Bilbo has an interesting way of holding his sword as he tries to protect Thorin. His sword arm is raised almost to the shoulder while the left arm is held down and slightly away from his side... as if for balance.
781. Fili and Kili are the first to attack Azog and the Wargs as Bilbo stands guard over Thorin.
782. Bilbo is grabbed and thrown by the White Warg the same way Thorin was.
783. An eagle fans the flames with his great wings.
784. Fili and Kili are the only ones shown watching Thorin being carried off by the eagle. Their ferocity to protect Thorin is matched only by Dwalin.
785. As Thorin is picked up, he is rolled in the direction of Orcrist. It looks like the Eagle was deliberately making sure the sword came too.
786. The pommel (metal counterbalance/handle) on Orcrist has four fountain designs, linking it to Ecthelion of the Fountain (Elf-lord of Gondolin).
787. There are 13 eagles to carry the Company.
788. The eagles carry the dwarves either in their talons or on their backs - depending on whether the dwarves have been plucked from the tree or have fallen.

1) Unconscious Thorin is carried in the talons of his eagle, Orcrist safe in front of him.
2) Bombur (with spoon) is picked out of the tree, but knocks Bifur off.
3) Balin and Nori are plucked from the tree and carried together in the talons of their eagle.

791. The Carrock rock is shaped like the head of a roaring bear.

793. Bombur is dangling from an eagle's talons in the background as Bilbo lands and looks at Thorin.
794. Bifur does not know where he is and looking around in shock.
795. Bifur actually looking present and happy watching the eagles wheel away.
796. When Thorin comes to, he asks about the Halfling.
797. When Thorin sounds angry with Bilbo on the Carrock, Bilbo looks down and distressed like Pippin did when Faramir first sees him in Minas Tirith with Gandalf. A Tookish trait?
798. Oin's ear trumpet was flattened by the Goblins when the Dwarves were captured, but he was still using it (flat and useless) when the Company gathered atop the Carrock and before the warg attack.
799. The dwarves cheer when Thorin hugs Bilbo - before that they are completely silent and watchful.
800. Bifur throws his arms up in the background when Thorin hugs Bilbo.
801. Dwalin leans on his axe, apparently relieved to find that Thorin was not ungrateful to Bilbo after all.
802. Thorin gives Bilbo a quick look-over after the bear hug. When he releases Bilbo (and before saying 'I am sorry I doubted you'), he takes a second to look him up and down and confirm that Bilbo really is uninjured.
803. When Thorin begins walking along the top of the Carrock to look at the distant Lonely Mountain, he grimaces and holds his right arm tight to his side.
804. At the moment Thorin lifts his eyes from hugging Bilbo and spots the Lonely Mountain, all the others have their backs turned as they watch the eagles fly off - all except Bilbo, who saw Thorin's face change, and turned to see what had caught his eye.
805. Oin sees the thrush (he mistakens for a raven) flying toward the mountain, excited to see his portent in action.
806. We see the first glint of hope on Thorin's eyes when he sees the thrush for himself.
807. There are stairs carved into the side of the Carrock. Built bear-sized??
808. As the thrush flies towards the Mountain, all the lands and trees are bare of life.
809. The thrush that flies back to Ererbor flies up behind the giant dwarf statue.
810. When the thrush is first hitting the stone with the snail that there are snails down both sides of the rock that pull back into their shells.
811. **One if the snails pulls his head back in when the Thrush crushes the other one.
812. The snails have yellow shells and blotchy brown bodies.
813. There's a tiny puff of smoke/steam from Smaug's nostril as he wakes.
814. When Smaug is stirred by the sound of the thrush cracking the snail on the rock, he's blue colored... but turns red as he's uncovered from the treasure and wakes up.
815. Just before we see Smaug’s nostril emerge from the mound of gold at the end, we can see a staircase in the background. There are large runes on the side of this staircase – about 8 or 10,
816. In the opening with the MGM lion, they finish by focusing in on his yellow eye. Then the final shot of the film is of another yellow eye.
817. At the end of the credits, there a tribute: In memory of Mike Turner
