Call of DOS Geeky Observations!!!
|
Can't Post
|
|
I'm so sorry it has taken me so long to get this post-DOS-post out, but I've been at the movies (6 times so far ;) and I keep finding things to add! PLUS, RL has me by the short-hairs. So this is part of what I have. I'll try and finish up mine over the weekend and proof what I have here. I'm ashamed you're getting such a mess, but delay any longer is not an option! PLUS I need to go through the threads and find any observations shared here since last Thursday night. I know everything I have here has probably been talked about bunches of times. PLEASE share your observations here and lead me to links where other observations are waiting for me. Remember: I do not include nitpicky, negative items. After all the hard work Peter and his filmic family have gone through to make these films happen, I don't have the heart to rip it up. I'll leave that to someone else to do ;) Thanks so much everyone! Here's my incomplete, unedited list so far: - At Beorn's home, Balin studies the yak in the main room and shakes his head in disbelief.
- Bilbo can't sleep as he's called by the Ring.
- When Bilbo wakes in the morning, the dwarves are already eating just like in the book.
- When the Company rides off on Beorn's ponies, Bofur and Gloin share one.
- Bilbo can sense the disease lying on Mirkwood.
- As they stand at the beginning of the elven path, Bilbo responds to the thrumming Ring and reacts when Gandalf uncovers the scrawling graffiti on the elven statue.
- In Dol Guldur, we can hear the black speech and the Ringspell.
- The marks on the statue are like those Radagast saw at Dol Guldur.
- When Bilbo puts on the Ring, he can understand spider speech.
- The dwarves and Bilbo are wrapped up like Frodo was.
- Bilbo distracts the spiders by tossing a piece of wood to one side, and they take off after it.
- The spider Bilbo attacks cries out that it stings; and Bilbo instantly dubs his sword "Sting".
- When Bilbo loses the Ring and frantically searches for it, he's suddenly drawn right to it.
- Bilbo has become more fierce and aggressive as he fights because of the Ring's influence and his mounting experience and claims it as "mine"..
- When Bilbo realizes what the Ring is doing, he's horrified and deeply upset.
- Tauriel saves Kili from several spiders..
- As the elves search the dwarves for weapons, Fili has loads of hidden weapons.
- Tauriel is fascinated by Kili, and Kili is smitten with her.
- Legolas senses something as they pass through the entrance to Thranduil's Hall as Bilbo rushes to catch up.
- There's a pattern of a tree on the landing at the foot of Thranduil's throne.
- Thranduil understands what Thorin says to him in dwarvish.
- Balin becomes the one to explain what's going on (exposition) when Gandalf isn't around.
- Thranduil hears Bilbo walking away as Tauriel begins to speak with him.
- Kili has fun teasing Tauriel like he teased Bilbo when the Company first made camp.
- Tauriel is upset that Thranduil allows the enemy to pass through their lands and attack their prisoners and their folk without trying to stop them.
- Legolas doesn't reveal Orcrist to Thranduil, who would have most likely kept it for himself...too.
- Gloin and Oin are in a cell together.
- There is cheese and bread among the food and wine on the drunken elves' table.
- Bilbo and Thorin are getting better at communicating. When the dwarves balk at getting in the barrels, one look from the hobbit and Thorin tells them to do as they're told.
- Bilbo does a little jig when the barrels and dwarves have disappeared.
- Bilbo is clinging to Nori's barrel when they first start down the Forest River.
- Legolas uses the dwarves' heads as stepping stones across the River... several times.
- Does Thorin notice that Legolas is using his sword, Orcrist?.
- Thorin throws his axe and hits the orc about to kill Legolas, but Legolas didn't know it.
- Tauriel shoots and hits an arrow heading for Legolas.
- Radagast has 3 birds nesting under his hat.
- Radagast reminds Gandalf of his duty to the world and not just his friends.
- Balin the negotiator and shows his talent while dealing with Bard.
- All the dwarves chip in their coins to pay Bard, except Gloin. He's very stingy (ref of old joke about Scotts being frugal?
- Kili takes the risk of going for the lever to open the gate, same as when he takes the risk of the first one to attack the Trolls who stole their ponies.
- When the barrels are trapped at the gate and an orc attacks the dwarves, Bilbo kills the orc with Sting from where he's still clinging from the side of a barrel.
- Bolgs claws and other bits of defense are fused to his shoulders, chest and back.
- The claws on Bolgs shoulder look like bear claws.
- When the barrels are let loose and Bilbo finally catches up with them, he clings to Nori's barrel.
- The dwarves pass their acquired weapons from one to the other.
- Dwalin head-butts one of the orcs and takes its axe.
- Tauriel steps on orcs heads to get up the wall.
- Legolas steps on the dwarves heads to get across and down the River.
- After the dwarf-stuffed barrels are moving again and well down the River, Bilbo is hanging on to Gloin's barrel.
- Bilbo finally crawls up on top of an empty barrel.
- Bilbo is always sure they can make it to the Mountain and never thinks of giving up.
- When the Company is discovered by Bard, Balin shows his talent for negotiating and engagement.
- Balin doesn't ask how many children Bard has; he asks how many beards he has.
- Alfrid goes to toss the contents of the Master's potty pot out the window, but the window begins to shut so it splashes all over the window and seat beneath.
- Alfrid takes a swig of the Master's brandy before bringing it to him.
- When the Company comes out from under the fish, Bifur's axe imbedded in his head has a fish impaled on it.
- Bilbo's teeth are chattering as the Company is brought dry clothes.
- Bilbo listens to every word spoken in Bard's home, and so hears about Girion's black arrow loosening one of Smaug's scales. .
- Thorin sees the dwarvish wind lance mounted at the top of a tower.
- Bard has a hidden cache of home-made weapons he gave to the dwarves. Was he collecting them for a civil uprising against the Master of Lake-town?.
- Bilbo drinks in everything he hears in the discussions between Bard, Bain and the dwarves. He hears about Girion and the loosened scale under Smaug's left wing.
- Just as Balin revealed the Company's Quest to Elrond when he was reading the map, he reveals Thorin's name to Bard when talking about getting to the Mountain.
- Bard is troubled as he remembers Thorin's name. He finds the tapestry with the dwarven family tree.
- Bard knows the prophesy poem of the King under the Mountain.
- Bilbo, Bifur, Dwalin and Kili go with Thorin to the armory to get some weapons.
- Thorin promises the people of Lake-town that if the dwarves succeed in regaining their realm, all will share in the wealth of the mountain.
- As Thorin is addressing the townsfolk, Bilbo is standing there shivering.
- Thorin learns that Bard is descended from Girion.
- There's great fanfare when the townsfolk send the dwarves off. There are 4 elaborate horns sounding the salute.
- One of the musical instruments being played in the send-off band in Lake-town is a serpent.
- Fili stays to support his brother.
- Gloin stays to tend to Kili, "My duty lies with the wounded.".
- Thorin tells Fili he would one day be king and he had to come as part of the Company.
- Bofur stays because he slept in his drink too long and woke under a table.
- Kili finally succumbs to the Morgul arrow's poison and is mad with it.
- There are walnuts all around Kili's head.
- Bofur has found the kingsfoil/athelas to save Kili.
- Tauriel decides to stay and heal Kili as Legolas chases the orcs.
- As Tauriel chants while holding the athelas poltus on Kili's wound, she glows golden and becomes slightly transparent.
- In his confusion, Kili talks to Tauriel as if in a dream. She is moved when he says she walks in starlight and reaches for her hand. "Do you think she could have loved me?".
- When the Company arrives on the overlook above Dale, Balin speaks a book chapter title and the film's title, "The desolation of Smaug.".
- Gandalf arrives at Dol Guldur with Radagast in the sled pulled by Rhosgobel Rabbits.
- Gandalf sends Radagast to tell Galadriel what is going on.
- Gandalf chants as he walks through Dol Guldur, "The evil that is hidden here, I command you to reveal yourself.".
- Gandalf repeats his chant against Dol Guldur's spell of concealment 3 times (that we hear).
- Gandalf creates the sphere shield around him like the one in Khazad-dûm.
- The mist of Sauron surrounds Gandalf's shield and seems to draw power from it.
- As Gandalf struggles against the mist of Sauron, he see the mist form into the Great Eye and the shape of Sauron form within it.
- After destroying Gandalf's force shield and staff, Sauron overpower Gandalf and has transformed.
- Bilbo finds the hidden stairs up the side of a dwarven statue.
- Nori uses a cup to press his ear against the stone wall and magnify his tapping with a spoon as he tries to find the door.
- Dwalin tries to use brute force to find the door.
- Dwalin, Bifur and Gloin start chopping at the stone wall as they lose the light.
- .
- Thorin despairs when the keyhole is not revealed and pleads with Balin, "What did we miss?".
- Thorin gives Thrór's map to Bilbo as he walks away and leaves.
- Bilbo tries so hard to keep the dwarves from giving up.
- Bilbo discovers the secret of the map and the last light of Durin's Day is the last light of the crescent moon and not the sunlight/sunset.
- The image over the secret door entrance (on the inside) resembled the entrance to Erebor in one of the DOS posters.
- Balin follows Bilbo into the head of the tunnel leading down to the treasure hall... just like in the book.
- Balin generously gives Bilbo permission not to go on; but Bilbo says, "I promised I would do this, and I think I must try." Balin is impressed and moved by Bilbo's quality the same way Gandalf was with Frodo at Bag End many years later. "My dear Frodo. Hobbits really are amazing creatures. You can learn all that there is to know about their ways in a month, and yet after a hundred years they can still surprise you."
- Bilbo is wearing fingerless gloves when outside and no gloves when he enters the dwarven halls.
- After Bilbo sees Balin walk away, he's pointing, then twitches his nose, wiggles his fingers and walks down the tunnel.
- Bilbo's gentle-hobbit side is compelled to knock before entering the Hall. The sound reverbs through the hall.
- Bilbo speaks a Hobbit Book chapter title: "Not At Home. Not At Home.".
- Bilbo is holding a cup he picks up that starts a cascade of gold falling and Smaug begins to stir, an homage to Bilbo taking a cup back to the dwarves that Smaug immediately misses.
- Bilbo is hesitant to use the Ring and only does it at the last moment.
- Normally, Bilbo keeps the Ring in the right pocket of his vest. This time, it's in his left pocket.
- As Smaug begins to stir, Bilbo tries to image the dragon's size compared to himself.
- In true hobbity fashion, Bilbo tries hiding by squatting down and holding still like he did in Goblin-town.
- Bilbo twitches his nose like he did watching Gandalf leave Bag End after their first meeting.
- Among the treasure, Bilbo finds gems, cups, bowls, picture frames, jewelry, gold, and much more.
- Bilbo sees Smaug's loosened/missing scale he heard about in Bard's home and understands its importance.
- The spines on Smaug's head flex outward when he gets excited as he speaks.
- Bilbo slides down the vast pile of gold and treasure like Frodo slid down the hill of shale to save Sam.
- As Smaug tries to convince Bilbo that Thorin and the dwarves are using him, Bilbo is in danger of falling under dragons-spell from dragon-talk.
- Each time Smaug prepared to spray fire, his entire chest area glows red like a Balrog.
- Thorin's first steps through the hidden door are extremely emotional as he revels on knowing the halls so well.
- Bilbo always puts the Ring on the middle finger of his right hand and keeps the Ring in his right vest pocket until he's in the Hall with Smaug. Once in the Hall he pulls the Ring from the left pocket, and the last time he puts on the Ring before meeting up with Thorin, he puts it on the middle finger of his left hand..
- Thorin knows that Bilbo is not being honest about finding the Arkenstone.
- The dwarves run to the defense of Bilbo and Thorin.
- The blocked off room where they Company finds all their dead kindred, most of the dead look like women and children.
- There is often a heat-haze around Smaug's mouth.
- While Smaug only has 2 legs, he uses the hands on his wings as legs in tight quarters.
- When the Company escapes Smaug's burst of flame, Thorin comes through the tunnel with his coat on fire. He throws it off and quickly says, "Let's go." He's very much in his element.
- Thorin goads Smaug into lighting the forges with his hot flame by taunting him as a witless worm and a slug.
- The Company splits up to distract Smaug. .
- Gloin and Bifur slide down some shuts and lands in two suspended trolley buckets used to move gems.
- Balin runs to make so flash flame to use against Smaug. Balin is also a chemist, it seems.
- Bilbo pulls the lever at Thorin's cry and the water puts out Smaug's flame just as he was about to spew fire on Thorin.
- After releasing the molten gold, Thorin runs under Smaug with a wheelbarrow then rides it down the trough of pouring gold.
- Bilbo is knocked down from on top of the wall to the floor below without being crushed.
- Smaug chases Bilbo to the Gallery of the Kings as Thorin wanted.
- Smaug is in awe of the Golden Dwarf Statue.
- The Golden Statue held together long enough to entrap Smaug.
- When Smaug says he's going to Lake-town, Bilbo chases after the dragon and tries stop him.

(And i think though it sounds like beards Balin asks Bard about bairns.) As Thorin enters the Pony I think he brushes past Gandalf at the bar to the left. Beorn's chess set is carved bears. When they enter Mirkwood Kili and Dwalin are carrying long green sheaves. By the time they lose the path they are gone. The ponies seem to have all cloth tack. Gandalf's horse has a lovely knotted cloth halter and reins in grey and tan fabric. No leather from Beorn!

Bilbo twitches his nose in the first head Shot after spotting "Something" that looks like a Bear. Alan Lee is shown as a Herald in front of the Master (It is such a short shot but Bomby believes John Howe is next to him) When Bofur wakes up, "Under the Table" his is in the Master's Chambers so, It's likely they had a meeting there the Night before. Beorn is so Big even he needs to duck his head under a Beam. The Dwarves allow some to step up and on their heads to get at the Weapons, just like "out of the Frying Pan", "GolblinTown chase" and of course Leggy's transfer across the Stream. (That never bothered Bomby since he can walk on top of Fresh deep power snow) When Tauriel steps on Kili's stone from his mother it's very much the same when Thorin steps on the Key to the Hidden Door. In both cases it saves these objects from falling out of sight.

Balin does not ask Bard "How many beards" he asks "How many bairns" (which means children).

In DG, where Azog speaks to gandalf, English subtitle states he says "you are too late, Wizard". The B;ack Speech word he uses, though, is Sharku, "old man" (the reason "Sharkey" was an affectionate nickname of Saruman among his Orcs, in the LotR books). In the Barrel sequence - Thorin throws away his weapon to save Legolas from an orc, killing it. At Beorn's - there are huge bumblebees, just like in the book (love the 3D effect... ) Others have mentioned - when Bilbo pull son the webs in Mirkwood, while up in the tree, we hear a faint whisper saying the word "Attercop" (a book refeence). In Erebor, Bilbo while talking to Smaug picks up a gold cup. (Another book nod).

When the woman in Laketown is talking about having seen Dwarves (long beards, fierce eyes) I think she is carrying athelas in her cornucopia-shaped basket. Bifur seems a bit frozen, and doesn't climb into his barrel until after Dwalin gives him a thumping sort of shove. Thanks for doing this Gramma!

Tauriel blushes when Thranduil tells her Legolas thought she fought well against the spiders, but seems surprised when he thinks Legolas fancies her. Legolas is pointing his arrow towards Tauriel although he can see her clearly when she is watching Laketown from afar. Maybe

Thorin clearly has a quiver of arrows on his back and he gets on his pony to ride to Mirkwood from Beorn's. also, Bilbo appears to be the cause of gaining the spiders attention but strumming on the webs twice which reverberate throughout the forest.

Balin says barins, it's an old Scots word for child/children. I think Gloin refusing to hand over money was a reference to him being responsible for financing the quest. Looks like he didn't want to part with the last of his gold! First glimpse of Beron features him roaring at the Misty Mountains, something I think he does in the book.

I used to wonder how bilbo aquired the map which he framed, and was briefly inspected by gandalf in fellowship. It seems he keeps it when Thorin gives it to him in frustration before walking away fron the hidden door. Typical hobbit attention to detail in keeping up with it...I liked it Peace.

- Thorin doesn't sit at Beorn's table. Neither does Balin.

Did you get a feeling it was other animals as well? You may be right! Not 100% sure, I thought they were bears of different poses and sizes - the Kings and Queens are standing fully up, and the pawns looks like cubs, I think...will need another 15 views or so to confirm though. *said with straight face* Yes Gandalf's tack is gorgeous! And so soft looking too. Count on them to get that detail right.
