Good read :)
Of course all of this will not turn around those who think the additions and alterations were a mistake to begin with, regardless of the reason.
But as someone very much open to embellishment, I simply feel Tolkien's spirit flow through this filmmaking process we have here.
Interested in the "moment that could have changed everything" and which is "close to disaster" regarding the DG storyline.
Oh well, I do a poor job in not reading too much before seeing the movie so far...

with the DOS Storybook, assuming it's accurate.......was VERY surprised at the details. But I've managed to stay away from the worst of it, including the 20 minutes of footage. And I can't resist looking for, or at, image stills - I'm weak that way.

- where they mention that these films are the only chance to tell the story of Dol Guldur and Mirkwood. That's why I'm pleased they took this particular approach.

they might take so many liberties with it that it might have stayed better unfilmed. I hope that doesn't end up being the case. I hope they do it and all in it the justice the appendecies and related sources lay the foundations for.

However, from now on I'm not watching any more footage – stills don't bother me so much. As far as I'm concerned, they can show as much as they want of Turiel and Legolas especially, because I don't care for them, as long as all the characters I do care for are not spoilered.

Yes, no more footage for me, hate the idea after waiting so long I would have seen so much - but "chopped up". No, I want to savor every second - w. all scenes in order (w. no cell phones, people talking etc.). Tho for me as well they
can show as much of T & L as they want, because they're not the ones I am seeing these movies for (so it all works out nicely - hope.) BTW was very pleased the Visual Companion - in spite of the cover - was really nicely balanced
IMO re content and pictures, w/o spoilers.

Yes, she is very powerful but not the MOST powerful:

but I'll admit, even though I've read lots of stuff, even about the 20 minutes of footage that I don't feel too spoiler-ed yet. I won't go into detail but the 20 minutes didn't spoil me, for one thing because I didn't actually SEE it, but also, it was mostly stuff I had already suspected was happening. Really, it's the actual footage that spoils me, not so much written things or even pictures, unless of course a major plot point is given away. I'm going to have to physically restrain myself from spoilers after the movie comes out though because I'm still not sure when I'll be able to see it and I don't want the whole movie spelled out to me until I've seen it myself....This is going to be tough.

In addition, it goes back to the White Council scene
which inferred Gandalf was under Galadriel - however - they then cut to Saruman who clearly is Gandalf's superior.

The comment is made by Lee Pace, in the little beige colored blurb of him talking about his character Thranduil. (She's the most powerful being, he is a renowned warrior, paraphrase of a sort of compare/contrast of these two Elf rulers that he makes).
Personally I think far too much has been made of this issue generally (regardless of who says it). What if someone said, instead, that Galadriel is the most powerful individual among all the Children of Eru then dwelling in Middle Earth? Seems a far less controversial statement but also one that only a true Tolkien geek could make and/or understand. We'd be excluding any Maiar and dragons by such a locution, so no argument about Sauron, the Balrog, Smaug, Stone Giant, or any Istari being more powerful would apply...but in my opinion this would be a ridiculous way to phrase a comment to a journalist, whether one is like Philippa Boyens very well versed in the lore and so likly capable of such precision, or like Lee Pace, likely more casually aquainted.

It is an issue when the fundamental roles and attributes are muddled without reason.
The movie goer who is unfamiliar with the books won't care. Many of us who are familiar have a desire to see more accuracy.
Yes, Lee may have mispoke or may not clearly understand the characters of the books and reflects the film writers deviation.

Another reason to stay away from critical reviews - a lot of them blab too much plot during a review, (tho OK if I don't care that much). Ironically the closer DOS gets,
the more I have to avoid the online community - at least for my first viewing. Am sure there will be comments from the premiers and people who see the movie before
the U.S., so guess by December 7 or so I'll be avoiding lots of websites - maybe even TORN just because of the titles and headings people use (that's not a complaint,
TORN has excellent mods. I just want to go into the movie "fresh" - well, at the "spoiled" level I am right now, which is right where I want to be.)
But for me it's going to be a monumental effort not to cheat more - tho any images are fair game.

within his realm without bowing down to anyone. In fact, he is the only elven King. Galadriel and Celeborn did not accept titles as they see themselves as guardians of Lothlorien. There is even a strain of resentment between the two. His father Oropher refused to submit to Gil Galad's leadership and had some presumed resentment toward Galadriel and Celeborn. He withdrew into Greenwood / Mirkwood as a result.
