From Bilbo's party and Frodo leaving is certainly something that, while it didn't necessarily improve the books, simply would have not worked well in the movies. Not showing this was a great decision on their part, even if they had to skewer the timeline to make it happen.
Shortening the Entmoot was definitely needed. Hahah, 3 day Entmoot... and, while they completely skewered the geography, I suppose cutting the distance between the Paths of the Dead and the Anduin was also necessary.
Cutting out Fatty probably was a wise decision too, as he really had no role after the first scenes in the first book. As loveable as he is.

I'm heartily glad that the differences have been settled, and that PJ will be involved in the project. Speculation on every aspect will no doubt be rife from now on! I'm intrigued by the two film idea and will be interested to see how it all works out. The thought of Bag End and Hobbiton being recreated (hopefully in its original location?) makes me go all dewy-eyed...*happy sigh*

not exactly what I was looking for, which was: anything that happens "offscreen" in the film, but not in the books? I'm looking for an example of reticence in the films.
But as to your ideas:
The 17-year gap could have been shown very easily: Gandalf advises Frodo to keep the Ring safe / cut / Gandalf returns, and in dialogue it's clear that years have passed.
The Entmoot takes three days in the book, but it's three days written off in a few paragraphs, once the hobbits have been introduced to Quickbeam.
Fatty does have a role in the book after the "first scenes". He appears in Chapters 3, 5, 6, 11, and 61. Which doesn't mean that he couldn't be easily cut, I'll grant you.

After all, Jack Black has a comic instinct, and I think of Bilbo as a comic character. But I also think of Bilbo as a very uptight British gentleman, which Jack Black is not. John Cleese in A Fish Called Wanda reminds me of Bilbo.

Not to direct, but just to say I'm definitely happy about the development.
I have reservations about how it will turn out, sure. So many variables and really, not a chance that most of us will be happy about how each one is resolved. What is the overall vision and purpose? Who will write the script? Who will direct? That actors, the score, the locations, 2-D or 3-D, the sets, etc.
But I'm generally very happy with the way the LotR films turned out as a whole. I didn't like some of the changes made, particularly some of the character driven changes, but others sat well with me. So until they, whoever "they" actually turns out to be in this case, gives me a reason to believe they will not at least meet the standard set in the first three films, I'm going to be pretty optimistic.

and checked my Blackberry for messages. I've got an e-mail from TORN, and as I scroll down, all the pre-meeting preparations fade into the background and I'm reading this amazing news release. I can't SQUEEE! or YAY! or WOOOOOOHOOOOOO! or anything. I have to pretend I'm all professional, and I belatedly remember I'm about to go into a presentation for a client that might result in several hundred thousands of work for my company.
So I grin inside and imagine all of you on TORN having a big party. Gramma's in tears, and old friends return to celebrate. I have to drive 3 hours to get home, and jump online as soon as I can.
So now that I can, I say WOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!

As everyone knows, in today’s climate no score is a sure thing until you’re in the theater and those speakers pop on. But I’ll tell you what I know…
Howard Shore is not currently signed on to this film. That’s not in any way bad news. Before today, there was no film! In fact, I spoke with Shore about The Hobbit just last Monday, and though he thought wheels were moving, he didn’t have any more information than that. But composers don’t sign on to projects until projects exist, so this is totally normal.
The better news is that Shore is interested. He’s been very public about this, so I’m sure it comes as no surprise—what’s great, however, is that Shore’s interest is likely to be very much fueled by New Line’s involvement. Remember, a film composer doesn’t work just with the director on a large project such as this. The “suits” become a large part of the process. (“Suits” seems a somewhat derogatort term, but I certainly don’t mean it as such. Just a convenient shorthand.) They ensure the composer has proper resources, proper materials, proper time. They make sure the budget exists to hire a fine orchestra, good recording engineers, noteworthy soloists. Composers and directors can be as creative as they want, but this sort of infrastructure is essential to realizing the final product. The Lord of the Rings’ score became what it was largely do to the support offered by such people as Paul Broucek, Rick Porras… and yes, Bob Shaye—all producers attached to New Line. Ever wonder why Shore, in the middle of an opera, a touring schedule and a number of demanding concert commissions agreed to score the little-known The Last Mimzy? With the support of New Line and Bob Shaye (who acted as director on this one) he knew he’d be in a comfortable working environment that nurtured his creativity. With New Line involved in The Hobbit, we’re almost certain to see many of these same behind-the-scenes people return, and that’s fantastic news. What’s more, there won’t be any sort of intellectual property issues regarding the LOTR themes and motifs that may find appropriate usage in The Hobbit’s score. Everything is already under one roof.
So short story, nothing is yet announced from Shore’s camp. He’ll have something to say when he has something to say. But I will note that the planets seem to be perfectly aligned for The Hobbit score we’re all hoping for.

It didn't happen to me today, but I can certainly relate. Being in a professional situation when all you want to do is be jubilant and uninhibitedly celebratory is very stifling.
I'm just glad I found out today. I check in here every 2-3 days and if I'd have missed this announcement or heard second-hand, I would've been very disappointed in myself. I guess I need to get your instant notification set up.
