Looking forward to the discussion. Great job on the organizing. Smile

Each cloak was fastened about the neck with a brooch like a green leaf veined with silver.
`Are these magic cloaks?' asked Pippin, looking at them with wonder.
`I do not know what you mean by that,' answered the leader of the Elves.

If anyone needs a last-minute fill in, let me know. I chose not to volunteer because I've done this twice, but I'm available if needed.

to have a pinch-hitter in case someone falls over.

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..."
Dwarves: "Pretty rings..."
Men: "Pretty rings..."
Sauron: "Mine's better."

"Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak.

Links to earlier LotR discussions. [In reply to] Can't Post

Some of the discussion leaders have asked that links to earlier Reading Room discussions of The Lord of the Rings be posted to this thread for reference. This is the forum's fourth LotR discussion.

The first LotR discussion ran from March 2000 through July 2001, approximately. My understanding is that the discussion began on Main, and that the Reading Room was created in 2000 to separate the discussion from the other activity on that forum. Unfortunately, Reading Room posts before January 2001 cannot be accessed. As far as I know, this is also true of Main posts that date so far back. However, most of the first LotR discussion was transcribed and saved to the Lasselanta Archive. Some chapters are missing from the archive: the Prologue (if it was discussed); Book I, Ch. 1-6; Book I, Ch. 10; Book V, Ch. 3; Book VI, Ch. 5-9; and the Appendices (if they were discussed). The earlier chapter discussions are probably unrecoverable. I'm tracking down the later chapter discussions, and will post an index to them sometime in the next couple months.

The second LotR discussion ran from Sep. 2, 2002 through Feb. 15, 2004. Links to all threads can be found using hatster's wonderful Reading Room archive of links for every RR post from May 10, 2002 through Dec. 22, 2004. Here are the dates to search for each book:
-Book I -- Sep. 2-Nov. 23, 2002
-Book II -- Nov. 25, 2002-Feb. 22, 2003
-Book III -- Mar. 2-May 9, 2003
-Book IV -- May 12-July 20, 2003
-Book V -- July 20-Sep. 28, 2003
-Book VI -- Sep. 29-Nov. 30, 2003
-Prologue, Appendices, Summary -- Nov. 30, 2003-Feb. 15, 2004.
Yes, the Prologue was discussed after "The Grey Havens". And note that there was no discussion of Book II, Ch. 1, "The Departure of Boromir", because the discussion leader was hospitalized.

The third LotR discussion ran from Feb. 7, 2005 through June 30, 2006. Thanks to the great efforts of squire, all threads from that discussion can easily be found using his LotR Footerama.

(The subjects of other official Reading Room discussions have been: The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales, The Hobbit, Leaf by Niggle, The Silmarillion, Smith of Wootton Major, Farmer Giles of Ham, "The Lord of the Rings 1954-2004" conference, The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien, J.R.R. Tolkien Encyclopedia, Unfinished Tales, thematic views of Tolkien, illustrations of Tolkien and The Children of Húrin, in that order.)

My recommendation to discussion leaders is that you not read the previous discussions until after you have devloped your own plans, so that you feel no pressure to compete with the earlier work. Your discussion should be based on your interests. Only after you have at least an outline and a list of your own questions might it be worthwhile to examine what others have already said. But that's just a suggestion, and not one that I myself have always followed.

Thanks, NEB, this is valuable. [In reply to] Can't Post

Last week I dimly remembered some gems from the 02/03 discussion, and wanted to use them. For other chapters I've done in the past that hasn't been the case.

Whew, that was fun.
