Deserve a " thread" of their own? We know PJ hates spiders.. so why & how can he really creep Us out? with the whole.. idea of many Sizes of spiders quiety? Stocking our Company . With (creepy.. David Cronenberg) music from Howard Shore Like.."The Fly" To produce the most amazing. .horrific scene?" Sure... SHELOB.. was more or less? Retired ... but, her babies? Not. BOMBY

Sadly, my favorite superhero is ... Spiderman. My cousin is.... a PhD bearing entomologist. I rescue spiders from the sink, the tub, my kayak, and shriek at folks who try to stomp them. They eat bugs, they are my friends. Spawn of Shelob... well... now.... that might be different. Though I'd find a giant shopping mall a lot scarier...

I think the Mirkwood spiders won't be as scary as Shelob (and hopefully not as big -- probably the same size as the ones seen trying to get into Radagast's house). It's the sheer multitude of them that is going to make them scary. In the book Bilbo keeps chopping and chopping and there are more and more spiders coming. Might be a pretty gross scene to watch actually...

Most of the film, even places that are dark, are well lit for screen viewing purposes. Now this means Mirkwood just has to be a bit dimmer since there's no torches like Goblin Town. The spiders' lair could be really dim and spooky with all the webs. I wonder if there will be 'other victims' hanging up like in Shelob's Lair.

that PJ follows a bit closely to the book for the Mirkwood Spiders, being "quick" and varied, and lets Bilbo handle them and not the dwarves. This is a pivotal growing period for Bilbo where he really starts to take charge of the entire group. Hopefully Thorin doesn't take away some of that from Bilbo on the screen.

Ah, I know what you mean. There will be far too many legs for my taste. Why is it always spiders? Why can't they be captured by gigantic mice? I wonder if I will ever be able to watch that scene with my eyes open. They will probably make use of the 3D here and let them come from above *shudder*.

Are the spiders from the Radagast scene in the movie the same as the spiders from Mirkwood?

at least probably very similar, as Radagast's home (and Dol Guldur) are also located in Mirkwood, farther south than where the Company will travel.
There it is: dwarves are not heroes, but calculating folk with a great idea of the value of money; some are tricky and treacherous and pretty bad lots; some are not, but are decent enough people like Thorin and Company, if you don't expect too much.

Giant mice, rats or squirrels, I don't care, as long as they have no more than four legs. But then again, since Bilbo has to chop off their limb it is probably better that I do not sympathise too much with them. And anyway, Sting, the mice killer would sound rather strange. *Sigh*, spiders it is then .

REALLY not looking forward to that bit. At home, I treat ordinary-size spiders with respect, if not with liking; I don't kill them, I evict them, having no wish to share my living space with them. It's not their fault they end up in the bath, or wherever. (I should add, if they were venomous it'd be a different tale!) But nasssty great huge ones? Do not like them one little bit, even if they are just CGI. Will keep half an eye open to appreciate Bilbo's heroics, but it'll be a struggle!

he won't have to do anything special. I'm freaked out by spiders! I turn into a wuss when I see one! But I turn into a monster if I see one on my piano, like that one time. No spiders touch my piano.
