With a hyphen and a lowercase "e" in "earth".
Also, when you indicate dialogue that's been cut off, use an em-dash rather than a hyphen.
I don't think it's "Grandpa Lu's chair" but "Grandpa Mungo's chair". That's how I heard it, and that's actually the name of Bilbo's father's father.
I'll have more later, but for now: great work! Much better than the version I made for myself. You heard plenty that I missed, and all the descriptions of the action that you've included are most helpful.

Nope, I'm certain it's a snail. In fact, there was at least one other snail on the same rock. Plus, this goes along with the book, in which the bird pounds the snail against the rock in order to crack its shell. =) Speaking of that, does anyone know for sure whether it was the sound of the thrush that woke the dragon up, or was that just a happenstance? I find it hard to believe that that bird was the first thing to make noise there in a long time.
Thank you all so much for the help finding errors! It took a couple of weeks to get the transcript up to where it is now, but I'm sure it still has tons of little errors. But who better to find said errors than my fellow Ringers? Fire away! Note: I'm certain the troll scene has a lot of errors, I definitely couldn't understand some of their Cockney accents. Did anyone else have better luck?

I thought it must be Mungo too, looking at the hobbit genealogy on www.lotrproject.com, but I listened to that scene several times and just couldn't properly hear the word "Mungo." However, since that's really the only thing it could be, I've changed it to Mungo in the transcript. Thanks!
Interesting note for everyone: three of the ponies named in the movie are named after Bilbo's relations: Myrtle, Minty, and Bungo! All three of these were taken by the trolls.

In answer to your question, I think it was the thrush that wakes smaug; the noise echoed through the halls, maybe (as suggested elsewhere) the thrush was tapping on the Secret Door...
An absolutely marvellous scene in any case.
And well done on this amazing transcript you are doing, it is very much appreciated (and not just by me!)

Who is outside? The dwarves are many miles away at that point... and I doubt they would be tap, tap, tapping on the walls of Erebor if they were just outside!
As I said... the thrush was foretold... maybe Smaug felt this...
It was a very cool way to end film 1 in any case!

In the book, they made quite a bit of noise:
They beat on it, they thrust and pushed at it, they implored it to move, they spoke fragments of broken spells of opening, and nothing stirred. At last tired out they. rested on the grass at its feet, and then at evening began, their long climb down.
On a different note, I hope Smaug isn't aware of the "prophecy". Otherwise he wouldn't let Bilbo still the cup, nor talk to Bilbo. He would kill anyone and anything to avoid the prophecy being fulfilled.

Although it is hovering a lot, I don't think it is a hummingbird. Either a robin--the one telling Radagast where the spiders are going is certainly a robin-- or thrushes perhaps (on his head)?

Hello,
Thank you very much for the transcript!
A few things I noticed:
- Fili says "I just had them sharpened", not "We just had them sharpened."
- After Bilbo gets his "handkerchief" the dwarf saying "Move on!" is Thorin, not Dwalin.
- I am pretty sure Thorin in Bag End says "... for when I called upon them they CAME." (not 'answered')
- When Fili and Kili get separated in the Stone Giant scene, Kili first says "What's happening?", then Fili says: "Kili! Grab my hand! Ki..." That Fili quote is not in there.
Also, being a biologist myself it makes me cringe quite a bit when your write about an "elk" and a "hummingbird". ;)
I wrote an essay over at Heirs of Durin to clear up all animal matters in the movie. Maybe you want to take a look. :)

The tea...yeah, that was a typo on my part.
Gandalf makes some sort of noise right before saying "very helpful, Bofur," and I'm fairly certain the noise is really the word "You're." Otherwise, it was a sigh.
Yup, you're right about Frogmorton!
Yeah, I'm not sure about the West Nags either. I'm sure Nags is right, as that's another name for horses, but I'm not sure about the West.
William's speech: It's really hard to tell what he's saying there, but I'm pretty certain there's a "k" sound in that word, so then it's gotta be "stinky." The sentence doesn't really make sense either way, though.
Cakehole it is.
Yeah, I knew it couldn't be "gatten," but it's definitely two syllables, so it can't be gut.
I'm certain there's a "b" sound, so it's gotta be "squibble," not squirrel. After all, Bilbo doesn't have a tail! =)

I watched that part several times, and I'm sure it's "squibble." After all, even a troll couldn't mistake Bilbo for a squirrel. He's not hairy enough, and definitely doesn't have a tail.
The way I see it, Squibble is the trolls' word for snot or booger. They were under the impression that he had come out of William's nose, plus he was covered in snot.

Well, it took a little longer than I hoped, but I’ve now been able to compare your transcript both to my own (which as I said, was far inferior) and to the one prepared by “skep” at Council-of-Elrond forums, and come up with a further list of suggestions/corrections. This is pretty long, so I’m breaking it into six posts. The CoE transcript shows a particularly sharp ear for cross-dialogue in noisy scenes, including the unexpected party, dwarf-roasting, stone giants, and Goblin-town sections. In my notes that follow, I credit skep’s work where it was most helpful. (You should probably acknowledge Council-of-Elrond—and TORN—in your introductory notes, as you have credited the linguistic work by the folks at Eledilion.) Most of my own suggestions have to do with Martin Freeman’s and Andy Serkis’s stuttering deliveries: was that four “no’s” or three? did he mutter “well” or “um” there? and so on. Now and again, I caught something slightly more important. Naturally I expect you will use your own judgment where my interpretation seems questionable.
And again: thanks for your great work!
First, a general comment: I think you should add a note somewhere that all translations from invented languages are given onscreen by subtitles unless otherwise noted. Put this at the top, or mention it the first time that subtitles are used.
In much of what follows, I give a block of text that appears in your transcript (as of late Saturday night), followed by “>>>” and then the same text with my suggested modifications in bold. For long blocks of text describing actions, I have elided for brevity, with gaps indicated by “[[…]]”. Sometimes I indicate that you should add a line of dialogue (or description) following (or amid) a particular passage; such notes should be self-explanatory. All my own comments are in ITALICIZED ALL CAPS. And so…

[Bilbo:] “It’s not that I don’t like visitors; I—I like visitors as much as the next Hobbit, but I do like to know them before they come visiting.”
[Dwalin and Balin, not listening to Bilbo, are still rifling through his pantry. ]
[Balin:] “Ah, that looks very nice indeed.”
[Dwalin:] [indistinguishable]
[Balin picks up a lump of cheese.]
[Dwalin:] “What’s this?”
[Balin:] “I don’t know, [indistinguishable] cheese. It’s gone blue.”
[Bilbo:] “The thing is, um—”
[Balin:] “It’s gone blue.”
[Dwalin:] “It’s riddled with mold.”
[Dwalin takes the cheese and tosses it out of the pantry, past the still-speaking Bilbo.]
[Bilbo:] “The thing is, um, I, I don’t know either of you, not in the slightest. I don’t mean to be blunt, but I uh, but I had to speak my mind. I’m sorry.”
[Balin:] [indistinguishable]
[The two dwarves pause and look at Bilbo.]
[Balin:] “Hm. Apology accepted.”
[Bilbo:] “Mm!”
[Balin:] “Ah, now fill it up, brother, don’t stint. I could eat again, if you insist.”
[Bilbo:] “Can-? Nothing’s been cancelled.”

[Fili:] “Careful with these, we just had them sharpened.”

[Kili:] “It’s nice, this place. Did you do it yourself?”

[Bilbo:] “No, it’s been in the family for years. That’s my mother’s glory box, can you please not do that?!”

[Kili:] “Ha! Mister Dwalin.”

[The dwarves laugh.]
[Balin:] “Let’s shove this into the hall, otherwise we’ll never get everyone in.”

[Bilbo:] “Everyone? How many more are there?”

[Bilbo:] “Ev—everyone? How many more are there?”
[Fili or Kili:] “Where do you want this?”
REGARDING:
[Bilbo:] “Oh no. No, no! There’s nobody home. Go away, and bother somebody else. There’s far too many dwarves in my dining room as it is. If- if- If this is some clotterd’s idea of a joke, ha ha, I can only say, it is in very poor taste.”
ARE YOU SURE ABOUT “clotterd’s”? I THOUGHT IT WAS “blockhead’s”.
[Bilbo opens the door, and an entire heap of dwarves, eight to be exact, fall in. Struggling to get up, they grumble and yell at each other. Gandalf is standing behind them.]
