That's different to the book: (spoilers maybe) Can't Post

I would like to catalogue a list of things which are different to the book- without emotion or any PJ bashing- just a calm, collection of not-book evidence.

Here's what I remember.

Thorin arriving late

The council of dwarves

no Gandalf rushing Bilbo out the door

Radagast

warg chase into Rivendell

sneaking out of Rivendell

White council

Morgul blade

Gandalf not there when going over pass (stone giants though, very good)

Dwalin checking the cave (as opposed to Fili/Kili finding cave)

Bilbo leaving

Bilbo slipping away too early - seeing Gollum eat the goblin

Bilbo being too brave too early (agree a bit subjective)

Riddles scene: great, but missing two riddles (fish themed ones)

Buttons scene isn't when he's invisible and getting through guard house

No sneaking in past Balin's watch with Ring on

No landslide

No stopping in a clearing and then discovering warg meeting place

Gandalf throws only one colour of flaming pine cone

Goblins then are supposed to turn up and set fire to the trees

Moth- instead of Great Eagle flying by and grabbing Gandalf before he jumps into the battle with a suicidal bang.

Thorin did not need to attack Azog, have near-death experience

Bilbo too brave! what is with his attack on the wargs? where will his redemption be in the halls of the elven king?

Bilbo didn't hang from Ori's leg (nearly left behind again) flown by eagle.

No erie scene- Bilbo afraid of eagles, no talking eagles.

What else did you notice? :)

one [In reply to] Can't Post

The bit when they are being tracked and Gandalf confront's Thorin...something like "Who have you told of our quest?"...did I miss something or did this setup go nowhere?. Is this a plot thread to be picked up in future films (someone in the Company) or should I just assume this is going to end up being a reveal of Saruman's treachery?

On the upside. I think Smaug's design is going to pay homage to Tolkien's own dragon renderings (as on the map, etc.). I'm excited about that.

No Bilbo meeting the dwarves at the Green Dragon... [In reply to] Can't Post

- No "coming to lands where people spoke strangely."
- No dwarves casting spells on the buried Troll treasure.

Nice list btw!

You mean different from both books? [In reply to] Can't Post

Or just from The Hobbit? Some things in the film of The Hobbit are different from that book, but derive from The Lord of the Rings, with varying levels of fidelity.

If you're counting differences from LOTR, then you could add that in the books, but not the film:

--Thror was killed by Azog while alone in Moria, not outside in battle;
--Thrain didn't disappear during the war of the dwarves and orcs but years later;
--Thorin never faced Azog in battle;
--Azog was killed at the door of Moria by Thorin's cousin Dain;
--the Witch-king had not died, and so his body hadn't been buried in an enchanted tomb; and
--the White Council had known Sauron was in Dol Guldur for many years.

Regarding The Hobbit, I would add that in the book's Riddles scene, Gollum doesn't give away the answer to his toughest riddle by saying, "Time's up".

I'm curious about this also! [In reply to] Can't Post

We know that Thorin has been at a dwarf council (so they all know) and we know that the rest of his company know...but who else?? And who would see them out to Azog?

My money is on Nori being the traitor...for gold!! Wink

Do significantly mispronounced names count as a change? [In reply to] Can't Post

Two weeks ago, there was a whole thread pondering which two dwarf names might be mispronounced, as was claimed (correctly, as it turns out) in an advance review. Nobody seems to have mentioned this point since then, but there are in fact two pronunciations that are quite wrong -- or you might say, the same mistake is made twice.

Missing four riddles, not two. [In reply to] Can't Post

These riddles from the book are not in the film:

--"An eye in a blue face"
--"It cannot be seen, cannot be felt"
--"Alive without breath"; and
--"No-legs lay on one-leg".

Also, "This thing all things devours" is missing its final two (of six) lines--and the first two words of the first line.

(So as I mentioned in another thread, even this scene which hews close to the book is about half changed from the source.)

One more thought: in the book, Gollum taught his grandmother to suck eggs, while in the film, she taught him to do so.

I think Azog's knowledge (so awkward saying that. Azog is DEAD!) will be linked to Sauron. [In reply to] Can't Post

Hearkening somewhat to Thrain's pursuit. "As soon as he was abroad, with few companions about him, he began to be hunted by the servants of Sauron. . ." Of course, Thrain had no Wizard looking out for him as Thorin does (Two in this film! lol).

"Hear me, hounds of Sauron, Gandalf is here! Fly if you value your foul skins, I will shrivel you from tail to snout if you step within this circle!"

"Do not be to eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends."

Troll scene and events leading up to it [In reply to] Can't Post

Stopping at the ruin of a farm house destroyed by Trolls

The quarrel between Thorin and Gandalf prompting the latter to leave grumbling

Bilbo and the two bowls of soup

Fili, Kili, and two missing ponies

Two more ponies taken

Bilbo tries to free the ponies, per Kili and Fili's "encouragement"

No talking purse

Bilbo-as-snot-rag

"Burglarhobbit" instead of "burrahobbit"

Dwarves attack! And fare rather well! For a while anyway.

Dwarves' attack foiled when Trolls threaten to dismember their burglar

Bilbo stalls for time via "helpful culinary suggestions", rather than Gandalf via ventriloquism

The Dwarves other than Thorin are slow on the uptake.

Gandalf uses his break-ground spell to *unblock* the sunrise rather than using ventriloquism to stall.

Thorin blames Bilbo, failing to credit the Hobbit for his clever, successful stalling gambit.

oh, the ponies! [In reply to] Can't Post

Another change is that the dwarves lose their ponies much much earlier- so there are no ponies who get eaten by goblins in the film.

This is perhaps a positive change. :)

I was reciting along to myself while watching this, and yes, was jarred to find it changed.

" Well well!", said a voice. "Just look! Bilbo the hobbit on a pony, my dear! Isn't it delicious!"
"Most astonishing wonderful!"

Balin Lookout [In reply to] Can't Post

They cut BOTH of Balin's significant "lookout" scenes. The one at the Green Dragon and the one where Bilbo sneaks past Balin when they regroup beyond the mountain. Imprtant moments in establishing the Bilbo/Balin dynamic. These omissions troubled me deeply. I am a Balin fan and I still see him as the lynchpin nearly as important as the most important dwarf in terms of bridging the 2 film trilogies.

It was some solace to see them using Balin as a lookout (in a sense) during the Erebor flashback.

Rivendell [In reply to] Can't Post

No singing of Tra la la lally that I noticed, nor any of the teasing by Elves.

Lindir, borrowed from book-FOTR and with a different role/function within Rivendell.

Elrond and hunting party grand entrance

Elrond's moon-rune-reading terrace has patio furniture made of solid crystal.

"Moon-runes" instead of "moon letters".
