London screeenings today

The Hobbit is having a couple of screenings in London today. Officially reviews are apparently embargoed until 5pm but reactions are beginning to come through on Twitter. Here's one of the first: https://twitter.com/thatterrylewis In general the latest reviews and reactions are far more positive than those earliest ones coming from America. Here is a rather sweet editorial in today's Observer: http://www.guardian.co.uk/...r-jackson?CMP=twt_gu

It doesn't surprise me that it will fare better in UK and Europe

I don't want to start some sort of transatlantic fight here, but Europeans (UK at least) tend to be more accepting and patient with slower paced films than their American brethren. Also, Tolkien is held to a very high esteem in the UK, so I think people will appreciate the extra detail and depth added to an already familiar story.

And lets not forget : most of the worlds more artsy, slower paced, independent, auteur directed and artistically unimcumbered by commecial necessities pieces of cinema come from Europe. And Woody Allen was never appreciated by America in the same way as Europeans have. He is loved around here . That means a lot. Moreover, i think several of the latest reviews, independently of being positive or negative, are badly written and often seem to be copying each other. Many of them dont even have a professional approach, but rather they feel more like grumbles or chit chats.

https://twitter.com/v_for_vienetta HFR-MAHGERD! The Hobbit looked amazing! Don't worry about The Hobbit. It's very good. You're welcome. https://twitter.com/fransgaard #TheHobbit very good. A mix of Lord of the Rings & The Labyrinth. yes, very much a world of its own rather than a LoTR spin-off with much more colourful characters in both sides. https://twitter.com/benpulsford Just watched @TheHobbitMovie - absolutely phenomenal. 3D and 48 frames-per second absolutely blew my mind

https://twitter.com/Stephen_Ashby The Hobbit in 48fps 3D: absolutely incredible. Both visuals & film itself were fantastic. Already looking forward to seeing it again. It was awesome. See it in HFR! Takes a little while to get used to but it is then absolutely brilliant. https://twitter.com/thomasdharris A Twitter review: 1st the positives, it's a lot of fun and a brilliantly entertaining film that although being nearly 3 hours, is totally satisfying...Martin Freeman is brilliant playing both neurotic and quirky which when supported by the dwarves, creates a genuinely enjoyable film……HOWEVER, the film is totally redundant on CGI and as a result of this, loses the heart of LOTR, replacing it with a pace-maker...…the 48 FPS makes the image crystal clear yet makes the overall picture look televisual and amateur, the 3D is also utterly redundant...#TheHobbit feels like deja vu, but this doesn't matter in the long run. It's entertaining and a hell of a lot of fun. 4 STARS**** 48fps is proving controversial again though - quite a few people are saying they absolutely hate it.

good, some positive feedbacks more about the movie. @ HFR: I think for now it is love it or hate it, which I expected. I mean we are so used to the usual 24 fps that it's quite difficult to adjust to a new presentation (higher frame rate). still I'm looking forward to the 48 fps.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/filmreviews/9730525/The-Hobbit-An-Unexpected-Journey-movie-review.html It's like after the film Peter Jackson personally came round to his house and shot his pet dog. He's even nasty about Martin Freeman's performance.

Answer me these questions three

I cannot figure out what this is supposed to mean:Eventually we are introduced to Bag End, and Bilbo Baggins as Martin Freeman, who makes exactly one-third of a good job of portraying the character. We also meet Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the 13 dwarves who accompany Bilbo on his adventure. Ken Stott stands out as the bibulous Balin and James Nesbitt is rather good as the mischievous Bofur, but the others move around as a kind of amorphous dramatic blob. Also, two of their names are mispronounced throughout the entire film, which is unforgivable. Several questions.- First, did they just say that Martin would have had to have worked thrice as hard as he did to do a good job at portraying Bilbo? Really? That’s not impressive, it’s depressive.
- Next, what’s this about Balin being a drunk? The red nose?
- Last, which two dwarves have names that have been mispronounced throughout the film? I heard a few liberties, but nothing so bad as this claim.
Any ideas?
…all eyes looked upon the ring; for he held it now aloft, and the green jewels gleamed there that the Noldor had devised in Valinor. For this ring was like to twin serpents, whose eyes were emeralds, and their heads met beneath a crown of golden flowers, that the one upheld and the other devoured; that was the badge of Finarfin and his house. The Silmarillion, pp 150-151 while Felagund laughs beneath the treesin Valinor and comes no more to this grey world of tears and war.The Lays of Beleriand, p 311

The Telegraph's movie reviews are typically all agenda-driven twaddle. I can only imagine that The Telegraph has a problem with Martin Freeman outside of the films, and being British they would have had a lot of exposure to Freeman in his various TV roles. Freeman probably just said something nasty about the Telegraph or the Tories at some point. Worth pointing out that the only two Dwarf actors he mentions (and applauds) are the two with the highest profile in British drama. That review reads like agenda-driven rubbish. I imagine the editor probably said to the reviewer "We're still bitter that New Zealand gets to be Middle-earth and not Britain, so rip into the film, there's a good boy - oh be nice to Stott and Nesbitt by the way, we want to do an article on celebrity garden gnomes and they might be useful".

I just listened to the most recent Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo podcast (which i very highly recommend) of their UK radio program, and they're having a Hobbit themed episode next Friday, featuring Mark's review of the film in HFR/3D and an interview with Peter Jackson. Mr. Kermode is a fan of the trilogy and P.J., and has had some experience with HFR (he saw Douglas Trumbull's Cinemascan years ago), but is not a fan of 3D so keep that in mind. I'm a big fan of Mark Kermode. He's highly entertaining and very well versed in cinema (he has a PhD in English), but has very broad tastes, including genre fare like Alien and Blade Runner. But he does not mince words, and is famous for his hilarious rants against such films as Transformers and Sex and the City. So i am very much looking forward to his take on The Hobbit, and it will be great to hear their interview with Sir Peter. You can download it for free at iTunes.
