it depends on the actor, the amount of research they do when preparing for a role and all that... Regardless I think it's bad form basically to say "I have no interest in the author's writings and still landed a part -- take that plebs."

...first and foremost so yes his words should be taken with a grain of salt. I'm surprised that no one has brought up his live gig in NZ from a few years back where he had a sly dig at LOTR. It was filmed for his "World Tour of NZ" series but I cant find it on YT. Its around somewhere. Bottom line is he doesn't like the books but clearly loves the script, end of.

That he clearly loves the script? Seems like an obvious thing he has to say in order to clarify that his dislike of the books does not translate into a dislike of the movies (or the script). Good PR, that is. For all we know, he could think it's all rubbish.

"I mean, the scripts are brilliant, very good," Connolly continued, "but I always disagree with people who think the movie should be like the book. A movie's a movie, and the book's a book." And this movie's going to be great, Connolly promised. Sounds like he'd fit in here pretty ok. (except maybe for thinking I'm scary and talk gobbledygook.)

It seems an obvious thing to say right after you disparage the source material. If he were to simply say "I never liked the books" and didn't follow it up with "but the movies (or the scripts)" are great, it would be a significant PR faux pas. I think it is impossible to know if he really likes the scripts, or if he thinks its all gobbledegook nonsense, and is just doing his part to stand by PJ. One of the least reliable sources for an opinion on something is someone who is being paid to work on that something...

I know quite few people who who have tried the books, but simply can't stand Tolkien's prose style (or his poetry). Both are absent from a film script.

It's an easy read - the story is linear, there are few characters, there is no sub-plot, there's a beginning, middle and an end. If people don't like Tolkien's usual prose and/or his poetry, then The Hobbit is a nice book to read.

It's linear, the characters are underdeveloped, it has a strange change of style in the last third, it has an intrusive narrative voice, the poems are rubbish and kill the pace, it's twee, and so on. Since the Hobbit is read at many primary schools it is often people's first encounter with Tolkien, and can serve to put them off. There are lots of books I don't like, from Dickens to The Hunger Games. I don't have a problem understanding that some people won't like books that I do like.

Gobbledygook? Nice word usage. He does have a point. I recall someone....calling it fatally attractive once. Some people tend to act like "deplorable cultuses" or is it culti?.. which may tend to make others shy away from them and the material. 160 From a letter to Rayner Unwin 6 March 1955 ..."I am not now at all sure that the tendency to treat the whole thing as a kind of vast game is really good – cert. not for me, who find that kind of thing only too fatally attractive. It is, I suppose, a tribute to the curious effect that story has, when based on very elaborate and detailed workings of geography, chronology, and language, that so many should clamour for sheer 'information', or 'lore'. "...
"There is a long road yet," said Gandalf. "But it is the last road," said Bilbo.

A film script has little in common with the book, other than the plot. And it's not the plot that people tend to not like about the Hobbit.

But if he enjoys the script, then there's little reason why he wouldn't enjoy the book. Bad taste? (sorry) Seriously, as with LotR, I'm sure some people will prefer the movies' take on things. Of course, when we encounter them, it becomes our moral obligation, each and every one of us and unto our last breath, to demonstrate to them the fallacy that forms the centers of their being.

Are we Tolkien-heretics, who needs to be converted to rid us of such blasphemous beliefs? Sorry, but I'm getting bad vibes from your post.

I should have stuck a smiley of some sort at the end of that. I was lampooning Connoly's perception of "scary," over-the-top Tolkien fanaticism.
