There are plenty of reason Sauron might not be able to recruit them

Maybe they derive their power from the mountains, so can't leave. Maybe they only come alive at night. Maybe there a law unto themselves who just love trashing stuff so would be just as likely to start trampling on orcs and smashing up Barad-dur as they are attacking minas Tirith. They look bloody cool whatever they are.

Or like the Jotunheim trolls in Trollhunter who allegedly throw rocks at each other in a large field.

Puns aside though, I think you're on to it. By the looks of it, we have one giant ahead of the company, and that one giant who falls just beside them. I think it's just the giants throwing rocks at each other until one of them falls over, not so much a proper battle (unless the falling giant is actually felled by some over-the-top heroics from the dwarves) as the company merely being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I was also familiar with the tale, having been a long-time student of Norse myth and folk tales. Loved that the Trollhunter film-makers worked it into the movie. Haven't been to the site myself, but would like to.

And it was pretty cool to see all those tales I grew up with put into a story on film :)

Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." that the giants are still just throwing the rocks at each other instead of them trying to hinder Bilbo and the dwarves way. That would be an awful change IMO. But if the stone giants are merely playing some form of football I can live with that. Hopefully they are just in the wrong place at the wrong time

Stone giants are dangerous, apparently

The dwarves were not simply afraid they would be hit by a boulder; they were afraid the stone giants would target them/pick them up and punt them. I don't think the dwarves could have caused the stone giant to stumble as shown in the trailer, though, so my guess is another stone giant beaned him with a boulder.

Probably too late for this comment to matter, but I did get your reference, and in fact I was thinking the same thing when I saw the stone giant falling down. Must be a distant relation.
