Author Dirk Vander Ploeg has recently published 'Quest for Middle-earth,' a non-fiction look at earth before the time of Man, before the time of the flood, approximately 4000 BCE. Vander Ploeg was interviewed by Pieter Collier at TolkienLibrary.com in June. That interview was inspired by comments here and here.

Don't have the time at the moment to read all of the links provided so I hope someone can answer my question. Is this a serious effort to prove it, or is this more of a fun fact books that actually makes sense but knows that of course, Tolkien's Universe is a work of fiction? I would love to read it if it's the latter. If they are really convinced their made up theories are true, than I do feel a bit sad for them...

I remember from the very beginning of the films' release in 2001 how I loved Peter's explanation of the story of Middle-earth and it's relation to the history of England. How Tolkien's world was just a slight veering off from what had been established as an unsure ancient history of England. That always intrigued me and appeals to my sense of order. I think I'm going to have to read this one :)

It sounds like a serious but incomplete effort

From the interview, it sounds like he researched and wrote the book very quickly (at least relative to the amount of research I would want to put into such a project). So it might have some interesting ideas and suggestions for further reading, but I can't imagine that it's really a complete (or carefully fact-checked) exploration of the ideas and history he brings up. Whether some of the more fantastical elements of Tokien's Middle Earth might correspond to elements in our Earth's history is a very interesting idea, and certainly worthy of study. I'm debating if I want to bother reading this book, or just do more reading (and language-learning) of the vast numbers of ancients texts that are really the primary source material for this sort of thing. Because I always like to go the source when I'm researching something. But there is so little time. :-(

Tom Shippey's The Road to Middle-earth is the pre-eminent book. We touched on a couple of these ideas a week ago in the Reading Room. For instance: the Shire was founded by Marcho and Blancho, which are Old English names meaning "horse" and "white horse", while England was legendarily founded by Hengest and Horsa, which are Old English names meaning "stallion" and "horse". Three tribes of hobbits journeyed to the Shire: the Harfoots, the Fallohides, and the Stoors. Three Germanic tribes supposedly journeyed to England: the Angles, the Saxons, and the Jutes.

I don't say it enough... or come out of lurking enough... to let those of you who have such an incredible passion and comprehension of all of these intricacies and beautiful layers of Tolkien's works know how much it means to me that you spend so much time sharing it. The richness of Tolkien's world is fuller because of all that you do. Thank you all. I appreciate it and enjoy it so much!
