However, the third title doesn't really fit as a bunch of stuff has already happened before he was "there" and it also means that they're kind of painting themselves into a corner and will have to a bit more than a montage of "back again". Bo5a would have been just as much a spoiler as rotk; something which I believe Tolkien himself objected to. Still, I'm sure they'll be awesome and I can't wait to get stuck in!

"The Hobbit’ Trilogy. Opening in July affords us not only the perfect summer tentpole, but fans will have less time to wait for the finale of this epic adventure.” --Warner Brothers. Would have preferred the December screening but oh well. Less time to wait for more Middle Earth. "Desolation of Smaug" is an alright title. Average at best.

It's good for people to know the titles and know the release dates... But i'm not sold on the idea of a Trilogy.. I fear Peter Jackson doesn't know what editing is... it's called a cutting floor for a reason.. :) Ahh well I guess we'll have to wait and see how things turn out but I'm not getting excited about titles ....

I dont think it fits with either an unexpected journey or there and back again in terms of how they feel. But i am beginning to like it more and more and think it isnt that bad now and i think by the time it comes out in around 470 or so days i will like it

I was hoping they'd drop the title There and Back Again. It's really quite dull.

I kind of see where you're coming from, but at the same time it is still rather whimsical, which is a good thing. Hmm...the journey in FOTR is no less expected than the one in AUJ though. DOS is pretty spoilery, although I guess that some will interpret it as the desolation caused by Smaug.

Just so happy that they kept the There and back again title. And Desolation of Smaug is in keeping with the "straight from the books" theme. I wonder if we'll get to see more dragons, and more of the dragon history than just Smaug? Ok, Silmarilliony stuff is off limits (unless referred to in the Appendixes?), but they might get something in. And the whole long history of the region is out there for them to play. Can't wait.
But every word you say today Gets twisted 'round some other way And they'll hurt you if they think you've lied

I think at least part of the success of RotK at the Academy Awards was the close proximity to the movie's release (mid-Dec) to the award ceremony. The academy members likely were still on the emotional 'high' of the completion of films/trilogy so well done, and not enough time to be 'talked out' of voting for it (in favor of the more typical artsy films) before they had to vote. With a July release, everyone will have 'calmed down' from the emotional ride, and I don't think it will fare as well come award time. This, of course, presuming that Hobbit trilogy is as good as LotR -- and of course, it is going to be, right?

Basically, I wonder if the ending for 2 is turning out to be rather weak... and instead of leaving the audience hanging for an entire year, they have accelerated the release of the third film?

It'd have been a shame if TABA had been dropped as a title. Is it just me, now that the July release date's been confirmed, that most of Hollywood knew of The Hobbit becoming a trilogy long before any of us. It seems clearer to me now that films like Captain America 2 and Dawn of the Planet of the Apes were being set for April to avoid Middle-earth? However, Wikipedia says X-Men: Days of Future Past was also set for July 18 and Fox is either going to ask Matthew Vaughn to move or delay its release.

Looking at the calendar for July 2014, the Fourth of July that year is on Friday. It would seem to make a lot more sense if they released it on July2 - a Wednesday - giving them the full 5 day weekend like has been done before. And then we could have the repeat of "Trilogy Tuesday" on the 1st. Trilogy Thursday just doesn't sound right... :(

TH: TDOS looks like it should be the name of an operating system for an 8-bit computer. I keep picturing a 5 1/4" diskette with TH: TDOS written on the label.

...to see they've kept 'There and Back Again' for the final film. After all, it's Tolkien's title, and it suggests to me that they might have the gentler-paced ending I'm hoping for, like the book. 'The Desolation of Smaug' is excellent too - so many shades of meaning. If I could have chosen I'd have liked to see the third film released at Christmas, but you can't win 'em all! Also, as I don't think anyone else has mentioned it, I'd just like to throw in a cheer for the image of Bilbo walking through the doorway of Bag End which seems to be the leading image for this film. It's been around for some time now, but I was just thinking yesterday, seeing it all over the shelves of Waterstones on the Annual and new film tie-in editions of the book, it's perfect for The Hobbit.

Is it like Smorg rather than Smowg? I say Smorg but have been saying as more Smowg for a while now - doesnt feel so alien any more, lol. Also im guessing you pronounce Radagast a lil different as well, how do you say it?

Smowg just doesn't feel right. Radagast is a bit harder to explain. I pronounce it like Rada-jast, rather than Rada-ghast, if that makes any sense? I don't like the "proper" way

never heard of it being pronounced that way before, lol, though i can see how you can think it is that way. I think once you have an idea of how a certain characters name is said, then that is basically it and not much will change it. I am pleased i say fili, kili, oin, gloin the same as what they will in the films, only Smorg for me. To me although i am getting used to Smowg from repetition it just doesnt seem to fit as well as Smorg for a dragon.
