Caught a typo in the title of the film as written in the article. Gosh I hope the theaters are expecting more than just an unfinished journey :)

Interesting thing about high frame rates...

At least, in 60fps. When the person on-screen is looking directly at the camera (which I assume won't happen in The Hobbit) it's kind of uncomfortable. With 24fps you know you're just looking at a picture, but at 60 it looks so real, you get a very odd sensation looking into people's eyes... I've only seen this in 2D, I imagine it's even weirder with an extra dimension.

6-12TB per day! lets say they shoot 10 TB per day that means the storagespace for the whole production is about 2.5 million gigabyte! *head blown*

When I was doing a course in animation we got to play with some pretty neat cameras. I haven't seen a 4K display, but the monitors we had were capable of displaying 60fps footage. We shot various test stuff - balls bouncing and people talking and things. It doesn't necessarily look better, but it looks noticably different and more real. I remember a friend on the course described it as "too real" and said they'd hate films to use it, but I personally prefer it. It'll be interesting to see how it works with a movie, when your eyes have 3 hours to get used to the look.

There is a shocking amount of people in Cinemas who know nothing about the tech that they work with. A lot of projectionists struggle with the new tech. I provided a link for the boards earlier this year, I believe, that showed all of the cinemas in N. America that will have 4K projection. I'll see if I can dig it up for you.

I'm from the UK though Would be a bit far to travel to see The Hobbit ... or is it?! My local cinema is a large chain over here, so I'll be checking with their hotline/helpdesk, rather than the individual cinema itself. Thanks anyway Owain

The only time the picture will look different is when there is motion in the frame. ron

The reason eyes look different...

Is because of the speed that a person's eyes twitch or blink is nearly undetectable at 24fps. (Slow down a blink in a film, you'll see what I mean). This makes the eyes regester as unnatural to us, but sped up the eyes seem to have more soul behind them. As you say, perfectly static shots aren't effected, but shots, even with very little movement, can look much smoother and nicer with an increased frame-rate.

I am slightly concerned that there are no cinemas around me that show 4k projection. I don't really understand much of this techno stuff anyway. Can someone explain to us lay-people what we need to look out for, so that we are seeing the film, we are seeing it how it's supposed to be seen

OK, thanks. Looks like there are a fair number in Blighty. Vue, Apollo, Everyman, & Showcase cinemas. I think I might try & book to watch in one of the big [London] West End ones in the first couple of nights. Will entire multiplexes be kitted out or just their one or two biggest screens?
