“The Hobbit” 2012 Desktop Calendars Can't Post

So, how is 2012 treating you so far? We’re a a handful of days in and I bet more than a few of you are realizing ‘The Hobbit’ might be coming this year, but that we’re still a loooooooonnng way off from December. Sob.

Well, to help you mark the time between now and then, we asked TORn staffer magpie to design some desktop calendars for the TORn community. She rose to the challenge and created two versions — one Bilbo, one Thorin – which we hope you all will love as much as we do. Please click through choose the image best sized for your monitor. And enjoy!

a glimpse of the Thorin calendar (and a little help for non-techies) [In reply to] Can't Post

If you click maegwen's link to the Home Page article, you'll see the Thorin wallpaper, but I thought it was worth posting here. And since the different sizes have different layouts, I decided to just do a thumbnail of all the aspect ratios for both designs.

For those non or marginal techies in the group ... these are the sorts of images you can display on your computer monitor screen. If you need help determining what size you need and/or setting them as your desktop image, ask away. (I think here is fine. Although tech questions usually go in Feedback, in this case, it's very pertinent to the thread's topic.) I can help (at least with Windows) and I'm sure there are dozens of other board members that can, as well.

Here's another link to the full sized wallpapers

And if you want a printed calendar to stick on the edge of your monitor or keyboard, check out this thread.

I have a hard time [In reply to] Can't Post

expressing how much I enjoy your calendars and how grateful I am that you spend so much time and share your talent to give these to us each year... but with these I'm in awe. It feels like a very personal, official link between TORn and the films. For me, anyway... these are beautiful works of art that just happen to be practical as well. I'm going to trade these off as my desktop backgrounds... starting with our Hobbit.

Thank you, Magpie. Wow....

I really need these new films to take me back to, and not re-introduce me to, that magical world.

I'm addicted to wallpapers [In reply to] Can't Post

I love beauty on my screen and can't live with just one so I have a wallpaper changer that will swap them out as often as I like (at the moment, every two hours). I just had to redo all my images when I got a wider screen LCD monitor. I have an assortment of nature images, a little art, and some tv/movie images (Doctor Who, Secret of Kells, Avatar). So I can stick these in the folder and they'll just cycle through with the rest of the images.

I do that at work :) [In reply to] Can't Post

My machine there has about 130 pictures from my NZ trip that is on that scrolling option... where they linger for about 15 seconds then go to the next. I feel like I've never left the place :)

Here at home, I use images from the films... but I'm going to keep all of these calendars you've made for us up and cycling for quite a while now... at least a year!

I can hear it now [In reply to] Can't Post

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo ... going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don't keep your feet, there's no knowing where you might be swept off to."

They're both great, but I especially like how The Hobbit one captures that moment and feeling so precisely. That's the one for me!

Thank you, Magpie!!

I won't take any credit for the mood of it... [In reply to] Can't Post

that's the official movie poster and it was created by greater talent(s) than mine. :-)

There are two things of interest to this graphic designer about that poster.

One is that it has the 'subtitle' of the first movie, "An Unexpected Journey" but not the larger, more well known title of "The Hobbit".

This is a bold move for a marketer. It hopes, in part, that the fan base knows it's The Hobbit without being told.

But it also sets up a sense of mystery. There's a theory that you shouldn't give an 'audience' (and that term can be used very widely for a number of situations) everything. You should make them want to 'know more'.. to question... to seek out more information. That will get them engaged (and in some cases, perhaps prompt them to contact you where they wouldn't have if they had all they needed to know).

And by giving us only a part of the info.. we can more easily identify with Bilbo's situation. He has no clue, does he?

The other interesting design choice is to tilt the image. Is that to echo Bilbo's sudden tilt in his world?

And a last geek thought. Wouldn't it have been great to see a handkerchief - off in the shadows - laying on the floor.

one ps geek thought - I thought about making all the calendars end on Dec 21 and seeing what people said. But it was too much work to do joke calendars and then resupply real ones. :-)

Yes, putting "The Hobbit" in there is actually not necessary - there's no LOTRO fan out there who wouldn't recognize that that's The Hobbit anyway. And those people who *aren't* fans, well, do they really need to know it's The Hobbit? Nope. Whether they saw LOTR or not.
And actually, for those people out there who actually never even saw or didn't care about any of the LOTR movies, they totally don't need to know it's The Hobbit either.

So yes the way they did it works very nicely.

Perfectly! Really gives you that topsy-turvy feeling, doesn't it? Bilbo's world has gone all a-tilt Shocked
