Hmmm [In reply to] Can't Post

Interesting...

I've had this theory for awhile, that they will use the Necromancer as an independant Character from Sauron.

The more I think about it -the more I like it! Probably wont happen and if it did fans wouldn't be happy...

What do you think? I think the villian would be more interesting if he/she were original rather than bogged down with the "I'm really Sauron" stuff (Especially because they will also have to cover the eye thing)

Cool

Yep. [In reply to] Can't Post

He's not known to be Sauron until the wise figure it out, so he's kind of disguising himself and most likely his voice. Kind of glad they didn't make it obvious by having Sala Baker. I'm guessing Benedict is going to do something very different for each character though.

Crikey.. [In reply to] Can't Post

The voice for Smaug AND Necromancer. Didn't expect that, Smaug yes but if confirmed by PJ looks like Sauron will have dialog in the films.

Wow. Voicing both of the main antagonists? Cumberbatch must be on Cloud 9.

Needless to say, I am thrilled to bits. Easily one of my favorite casting choices on these films. Just superb.

Personally, i'm no fan of one actor doing two roles/voices. [In reply to] Can't Post

One could hear Gimli in Treebeard.

Why not taking two actors? I'm sure there are a lot of talented voice actors out there. Oh well, let's wait and see (hear)...

Love it. It's great that it's finally confirmed. [In reply to] Can't Post

Smaug will have a heck of a voice! And this will be like an introduction for Benedict as a new generation of "voices" in movies besides Liam Neeson, James Earl Jones, Hugo Weaving, etc.

I'm not worried [In reply to] Can't Post

I imagine The Necromancer's voice will have quite a bit of distortion (to give it that supernatural, ethereal quality).

I wouldn't have minded JRD voicing Treebeard if they had bothered to modify his voice a bit more. Instead, they essentially left it as it was. Hopefully they don't make that same mistake here.

The other problem was that JRD didn't bother to change his voice all that much from the start. But some actors are able to convingingly change their voices to the point of being unrecognizable. I need only point to our very own Andy Serkis.

Hopefully Cumberbatch possesses that talent.

Mike Fleming at Deadline is pretty accurate most of the time. [In reply to] Can't Post

They don't usually claim exclusive casting stories unless they are 100% right. They must have heard something from WB, perhaps. I'm sure we'll be hearing from PJ or other cast members soon about this.

Alan Howard... [In reply to] Can't Post

Did an excellent job as the voice of Sauron and The One Ring. I was holding out hope they'd ask him back. But I'm sure BC will do an excellent job in both roles... as long as they don't sound too much alike. As much as I love John-Rhys Davis I couldn't help but hear Gimli every now and then in Treebeard's lines.

I don't think that will happen. [In reply to] Can't Post

PJ has already made it pretty clear that the Necromancer will still be Sauron.

I think having him as a separate character would be a little pointless anyway. The whole point of the Dol Guldur plot is that the Necromancer turns out to be Sauron.

Alan Howard could still be the ring because I bet we still get to hear it make itself known to Bilbo.

And this is great if accurate, BC will be awesome in both roles, and I don't imagine he'll be seen much in either.

I just had a terrible thought... [In reply to] Can't Post

What if Smaug and the Necromancer are allied in these films? I mean, I doubt the fact the BC may be voicing both characters but I just hope PJ and crew don't tie to two villians together just for the hell of it.

or confirmation of safeness [In reply to] Can't Post

I wonder if with BC voicing both, it means that we won't be seeing Smaug and N in the same scenes, as we didn't with Gimli and Treebeard. Too confusing, too similar, too complicated...

Andy Serkis... [In reply to] Can't Post

Voiced a other characters in Lord of the rings bar Gollum. I agree (as others have discussed here before) that John R. Davis voicing of Treebeard was a slight bit distracting. But if an actor can change his voice - much like Andy can, then there should be no issue..

Doubtful. [In reply to] Can't Post

Smaug seemed to be a lone-wolf when it comes to villainy, I don't think he wants to share with anyone else, despite the fear from the White Council that Smaug may be forced under Sauron's rule. I doubt they'll be in any scenes together either, since they're really on opposite sides of the geography. One is in the middle of a dungeon in Mirkwood, and the other is hiding in a mountain most of the time until he goes to Esgaroth.

A speaking ring would certainly alert Gandalf and would complicate the beginning of Fellowship.
