Peter Jackson on shredding scripts and Hobbit casting
|

New Zealand's TV3 has just broadcast an interview with Peter Jackson ahead of tonight's NZ premier of The Lovely Bones. When the discussion led to preparations for filming The Hobbit, he had this to say: "We had slipped a copy of the script to Ian McKellan, who read it - because obviously we want Ian back again as Gandalf. Literally, we had somebody fly to London with the script in their hand baggage, they went to his house, gave him the script and then when he was finished with it he gave it back and that person took it to a shredding machine and shredded the script. The security is so tight." On The Hobbit casting: "We'd like the people that are reprising their roles from The Lord of The Rings to come back. We haven't offered the roles to anyone yet because we can't do that yet. But Hugo Weaving would be great to have back as Elrond. And Galadriel - Cate Blanchett would probably have an appearance in The Hobbit. But the Hobbits - Merry and Pippin, Sam and Frodo - they weren't born when The Hobbit takes place." The full interview with PJ is on www.tv3.co.nz/campbelllive
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. The Lovely Bones PJ says this isn't the perfect adaptation of the book, which would need five hours to do properly. "It's an adaptation of our (the scriptwriters') response to the book." He also responded to critics' comments that he pulled back on the violence. "I've got no interest in filming the rape and murder of a 14-year-old girl. I wouldn't want to film it, I wouldn't want to see it." The Dambusters "It's one of the great true stories of WWII - it's a heroic story. If all else goes smoothly we should be filming it in 2010." Also, PJ has built 10 Lancasters for the movie. Quickfire questions PJ's favourite film: The original King Kong, and Buster Keaton's The General. Who PJ would have play him in a movie on his life: Nick Frost. PJ's favourite Kiwi film: Goodbye Pork Pie. It was so much fun to see PJ on TV again - and to see him and Saoirse gently ribbing each other on the red carpet while being interviewed live. PJ has such a knack of gaining the affection and loyalty of those he works with, bless his hairy hobbit feet.
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Are there any echoes of "The General" or "Goodbye Pork Pie" in Jackson's own work? //

that Christopher Lee's name and character has so far not been mentioned. If they want Cate back, then the White Council is in, in a big way, and you can't have one without the other, But I remember that relations between the two were testy at one time b/c of the cut Isengard scene from ROTK. I hope this is not an issue? (CL feeling more comfortable talking to Del Toro?) And it's interesting that some of the critical panning of TLB is due to the fact that it isn't violent enough-some wanted the rape and murder depicted, saying he watered it down for American audiences, and it eviscerates the story., I really am stumped by this, when Dakota Fanning was panned for being in a similar scene in a film last yr. Now they wanted to see Saoirse in a scene like this? Otherwise, great to see him again at a NZ premiere. Ah, brings back memories. Just great to see him period. I hope he is not nervous about the Golden Globe nominations coming out Tuesday?

even though Pork Pie is a Kiwi classic. But GPP is a road movie - about a mini being driven from one end of the country to the other while the police give chase, with the car disintegrating piece by piece along the journey. I think (without having seen the film but having seen excerpts frequently) that the film's madcap humour would have an echo with PJ's.

we are not supposed to read into Nick Frost comment,eh? Also, very good news that characters who were not born back then will not make an appearance.

Actual working, flying Lancaster bombers? Now, that would be sweet. Google Image results for Lancaster bomber I also applaud his response to critics of The Lovely Bones.

is he implying and confirming with that sentence that besides Galadriel (Cate Blanchett) and Elrond (Hugo Weaving), Legolas (Orlando Bloom), Haldir (Craig Parker) and Arwen (Liv Tyler) will also return in The Hobbit? It certainly grabbed my attention!

Orlando Bloom, definitely, needs a hit. He simply desappeared from sight!, after some bad choices. OTOH, what about Christopher Lee and Andy Serkis? Viggo Mortensen?
