The Silmarillion and Letters from Father Christmas – Discussion Schedules Can't Post

In the Reading Room, there are two kinds of discussions.

First, there are the subjects of this thread: one or more official, organized discussions (scheduled but not stuffy!) in which participants sign up in advance to discuss a particular subject in depth over the course of a week. Usually the subject is a chapter from one of Tolkien’s best-known full-length books, and these are discussed in order. Two such lists appear below; the first is for The Silmarillion, our “primary” discussion. Typically the leader of a primary discussion posts from one to three threads daily with questions about passages from the text. Sometimes, as here, there is a “secondary discussion” that runs concurrently with this chapter discussion. The subjects of these discussions are usually more obscure, and are discussed in fewer threads, typically two to four each week. In this case, Letters from Father Christmas will be discussed over three weeks in December.

Second, there are independent discussion threads, which anyone may post at any time – with two caveats. First, one shouldn’t post new threads about the chapter or subject currently under (scheduled) discussion; and second, no one person should post so many threads as to singlehandedly overwhelm the scheduled discussions. Otherwise, as it says in the welcome message above, if you have a question about Tolkien, this is the right place to ask it!

Here is the nearly final schedule for our discussion of The Silmarillion. “Nearly” because five weeks remain open for volunteers to lead. If you wish to lead a chapter, or have questions about either discussion schedule, please post them here, or send me a PM.

I am so happy... [In reply to] Can't Post

to see a number of newcomers and relative newcomers to the Reading Room signing up for a week! It is always a pleasure to hear new viewpoints, both from discussion leaders and respondents! You are all very welcome.

And, once again, thanks to N.E.B. for organizing this!

Thanks for taking on QS 19: “Of Beren and Lúthien” I, Nov. 16-22! [In reply to] Can't Post

I do appreciate you making this offer to lead this week's chapters that I'll be covering, and even more so, per your latest pm to me, to lead the first part of "Of Beren and Lúthien" in November, that hadn't yet been claimed. That's a great help!

I've got the Precious, and it's beautiful! [In reply to] Can't Post

I ordered a used copy of the 1999 edition of Father Christmas Letters, and it arrived today, all the way from Herts, England. I quickly leafed through it and what a lovely book! It looks every bit worth the $19 I spent. I look forward to reading it with everybody.

QS 13: “Of the Return of the Noldor”“ [In reply to] Can't Post

Hi NEB,

I must say that I am enjoying the Sil discussions immensely- many thanks for all your work. I see that there are still a few slots left and I am feeling a bit convicted of simply benefiting from the work of others. Thus, probably against better judgment, I would like to put my name forward to do QS 13: “Of the Return of the Noldor”“.

Beren and Luthien [In reply to] Can't Post

Sorry to be awkward, but I don't think I'll be able to start of Beren and Luthien directly on Nov 16th as that is going to be one busy day for me, I have to be up very early to see the Doctors and as such I will have to go to sleep early as well! Can I start it on the 21st or 23rd whichever is better. Not sure whether the times apply to mine or California's!

There are many options. [In reply to] Can't Post

You can start a day earlier. If you are preparing your posts ahead of time, you can send a few of them as text files to one of us (I'm willing to help) and we'll post them during the time you're away. Starting as late as Wednesday crowds things a little, but so long as we know it's coming that's ok.

(My on personal opinion, of course, but over the years we've done all sorts of things to help with RL issues! Everyone has them!)

Yes, that's right. [In reply to] Can't Post

Your portion of "Beren and Lúthien" covers the text from the beginning of the chapter through the sentence, "But Finrod walks with Finarfin his father beneath the trees in Eldamar".

The next discussion leader begins with the text "Now Beren and Lúthien Tinúviel went free again and together walked ..." and continues to the chapter's end.

For reference, here are the dividing points for the other split chapters in our discussion:

Dec. 7-13 -- QS 21: "Of Túrin Turambar" I (ending with "rumour spoke only of the Black Sword of Nargothrond.")
Dec. 14-20 -- QS 21: "Of Túrin Turambar" II (beginning with "In that time of respite and hope, when because of the deeds of the Mormegil")

Jan. 25-31 -- "Akallabêth" I (ending with "and the name of his queen he changed to Ar-Zimraphel.")
Feb. 1-7 -- "Akallabêth" II (beginning with "The mightiest and proudest was Ar-Pharazôn the Golden")

Feb. 8-14 -- "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age" I (ending with "and he took no visible shape again for many long years.")
Feb. 15-21 -- "Of the Rings of Power and the Third Age" II (beginning with "Thus began the Third Age of the World, after the Eldest Days")

What, no more Bored of the Rings threads? [In reply to] Can't Post

Please!

”’Farewell, Lady of Dor-Lomin; we ride now with greater hope than ever we have known before...‘
...and the sun glittered on fifty blades as they leaped forth, and the court rang with the battle-cry of the Edain of the North: ’Lacho calad! Drego morn! Flame Light! Flee Night!‘
Then at last Hurin sprang into his saddle, and his golden banner was unfurled, and the trumpets sang again in the morning; and thus Hurin Thalion rode away to the Nirnaeth Arnoediad.“
