Hi tornsibs A nice easy short post to finish off the last section of the 2D Storyboards - Animatics - Pre-Viz. Here we see Aragorn as he lights up chasm to the Mines of Moria
This one was of the views it took me a while to work out in the film - for some reason it seemed overlayed and noticable - I couldn't work out the scene until I studied the film on pause ... Did you have any trouble working out this scene (frame 2 above) the next one ...
Another well depicted shot which came out on film as planned. The lighting on the Orthanc crown platform to me looks a little bright - but otherwise this has that blue hue to it I love about the films. Do you like this sequence? and onto another ... Her we see Gandalf and the Balrog on the Bridge ... Im not sure if you can see it, but on the Animatic shot of the Balrog - if you look to the left you will see someones hand ...
I like the way the Balrog flames up here! ... and Gandalf does not move. and for the final scenes ... the majestic and beautiful sequence shots as the Fellowship boat past the Argonath ...
To grab a better look at the shots, you can see them on the special extended edition (first disc in the Appendices Book to Script) ... Thankyou to everyone who stayed tune to the Storyboards and Pre-viz discussion. To follow this discussion, well be looking at the early Storyboards - first up, The Prologue. See you tomorrow Cheers Elven x

It took a few viewings (but then I have had a lot of viewings of these) but once it fell into place, the Moria scene became one of my favorites. Of course, since I have a fear of heights, I wouldn't want to be looking over there. Did Peter show Christopher Lee the animatic because he is standing just the same way? Yes, I had seen the hand holding the balrog. I thought it was kind of funny! But after you do these pre-viz shots, you surely know how you want the film to look.

that one in Moria - I wonder if its the perspective that throws me out though sometimes looking at it. And Christopher Lee on Orthanc - that height is amazing. I remember when Gandalf throws himself off there to be caught by the Eagle - I got vertigo and theres another where we go down intot the orc pits of Orthanc from the top of the Tower ... aaarggghhh - ...looks fantastic on the big screen! Thanks for the post Alcarcalime Cheers Elven x

...and all scenes atop the tower of Orthanc is beyond amazing. They really know how to light it well and they did so many amazing and creative camera work on Orthanc. To name a few: - the moth while the camera swoops down the caverns - Saruman bringing down the mountain (as seen in the original post) - the arrival of the crows - Saruman's speech in TTT ("A new power is rising") - that shot while Saruman confronts Theoden and co. in ROTK EE. (I think that was the last miniature shot ever filmed after it won the Oscar Best Picture)

I do like your list! They are memorable shots! and there is some great footage of Christopher Lee doing the scene where he is talking to the company below ... to think that they can take that footage and turn it into something so wonderful - Im in awe of their creativity. If there were somewhere I'd love to visit in ME, it would be Orthanc - though Im still trying to work out where the door is to the platform atop the tower - - not that I might venture out there (especially on a windy day ... but the view!...) Thanks for joining the pre-viz throng tiamy. Cheers Elven x

Seeing these explains a lot to me about how Jackson was able to do all three films at once -- he had a visual reference for every scene, so it didn't have to sit around and say "Uh, ok, now what exactly did we want to do here again?" I do love the bit with Saruman on the top of his tower, conjuring up trouble for the Fellowship. Not book canon, I know! They win me over in the films not just with the image of Saruman up there, but with the sweeping way they film the shot.

is amazing - as if we are privy to be up there with him on the edge as he commands the forces of nature at his disposal ... not bad! There was a great shot of the Eagle appearing in the blue night sky with a swollen white moon in the background - which was fantastic - and the eagle flies towards the screen and then past it to the right (I think from memory) ... I would have loved to include it in the screencaps, but it didnt work out that well and wasn't very clear - but Gandalf was riding on its back ... another great shot! Thankyou weaver! Cheers Elven x

they followed the pre-viz layouts when so much of the filming seemed to be spontaneous. I can see why Elijah and Sean said that they could "virtually" see the movie from the storyboarding that was put together along with audio. I just love the Balrog and Gandalf challenging it. I get so caught up in the film, I forget that so much of this is miniature. LOOK! A Giant hand! :D I wish we could at least see the storyboards of the scenes that were never filmed or deleted after filming. It would definitely fill in the gaps for many parts of the films. Thanks so much, Elven!
