Right... [pulls out written notes.] It's the concierge's card from L'Ermitage. I'd like to thank the Academy and New Line. I'd like to thank Mark Ordesky and Carla Fry. Peter Jackson, who is a sensational person to work with. Fran Walsh and Barrie Osborne for giving me the opportunity to work on an amazing project. I had the privilege of working with a really sensational cast and terrific crews, predominantly New Zealand. I want to send my love to my partner Bronwen and my sons Jack and Sam who are probably still at school in Sydney. I just want to say Australia and New Zealand are terrific places to grow up, and great to work in and great to live in. And last of all, I want to dedicate this to the late Brian Bansgrove, who was the chief lighting technician on LORD OF THE RINGS, on the trilogy. And Brian, this is for you. Thank you.

My journey has been made whole by the love of my partner Tania Rodger and the wonderful genius of the small group of young New Zealanders that have gathered around us to make this so possible. Owen: I just want to say I don't know why anyone gave me the job in the first place. I'm still recovering from that. I got an opportunity to go to the most beautiful country on earth, in my opinion, work with a genuine fellowship of people and torture a lot of actors. I can't thank the Academy enough for this. It was just a tremendously rewarding experience to translate the words of Tolkien into music and I just feel blessed to be a part of this production. I want to thank my wife Elizabeth and daughter Mae whose love and support are incredible to me and have just guided me on my journey. Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, God you did the most risky thing that I think anyone has ever done in this industry, and I'm so happy for you that it paid off. Your collaboration and your partnership and your support just gave me the most incredible working experience of my life. To Barrie Osborne, our producer, thank you so much, Barrie, for just being there every day and supporting us. To a wonderful cast, and a wonderful crew in New Zealand, everybody that made my working days so enjoyable. It was just there when I needed it to be there. And the actors were just doing such a wonderful job. And I just want to thank two very special people that when I was 8 years old I made films at home on a Super-8 camera that my mum and dad had bought for me. Okay. We grew up loving these books. We had no idea that we were gonna go gray trying to make them into movies. And we have so many people that we need to thank, but the first person we absolutely must thank is Professor J.R.R. Tolkien. Without him we wouldn't be standing here. I want to thank my parents John and Jane Boyens who gave me those books to read. My wonderful brother David, my sister Nicki, my beautiful children Calum and Phoebe, and Ken Kamins, Barrie Osborne, Howard Shore thank you so much for everything that you've done for us. Most of all, I want to thank these two people standing behind me.
Peter Jackson:

Just waiting for Fran to get her Oscar. There we go. This is just unbelievable. I'm so honored, touched and relieved that the Academy and members of the Academy that have supported us have seen past the trolls and the wizards the hobbits and are now recognizing fantasy this year. Fantasy is an f-word that hopefully the five second delay won't do anything with. I just want to say a very few quick words especially to the people of New Zealand and the government of New Zealand and the city councils and everybody who supported us the length and breadth of the country. Billy Crystal is welcome to come and make a film in New Zealand any time he wants. A special thanks to Peter Nelson and Ken Kamins, who were with me right from the days of "Bad Taste," and "Meet the Feebles" which were wisely overlooked by the Academy at that time. And I especially want to pay tribute to our wonderful producer, Barrie Osborne. And I'd please like him to say a few words.
Barrie Osborne:
It's a great honor to be here. I started out in the business 35 years ago getting people coffee. And I wonder if the fact that I dated Billy Crystal's cousin so many years ago has anything to do with this. But it is really a great pleasure to be in such great company. Uh-oh, I'm in trouble now. To be nominated with these four other great films and after these many years to receive this award is really a thrill for all of us and we all thank the Academy. It's really a tribute to the talents of all the people both in front of the camera and behind the camera that we win this award. I want to thank, in particular, my partner Carol, my beautiful daughter Danielle and my 87-year-old dad who's out there in the back somewhere here to celebrate this with us. I want to thank, also, J.R.R. Tolkien and also the fans that supported us on this journey. And of course, Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne whose courageous venture allowed us to make this film and their support throughout the journey, and Mark Ordesky, who worked alongside of us throughout and became a great film -- a great friend, sorry. And of course to Peter Jackson, who was never satisfied with 100%. But by his example of pushing for 110%, he inspired all of us to do our utmost to make these films and bring them to the screen. And finally, to Weta, who is in Chicago, in Wellington, New Zealand, and to the production team who are in the Port Nicholson Yacht Club, it's time to celebrate.

The one Oscar show I ever saw was the 2004 one. Stayed up all night, just to see it (and had to work right after it). But it was so worth it. So happy with every nomination turning into an award. Especially the one for PJ, where the entire crew got onto the stage.
They don't broadcast the show here anymore, only through pay-tv (and I don't have it). So I'll just wait for the news tomorrow morning.
I only heard about the TORn-Oscar party years later. But I really hope that The Hobbit or Film 2 will be nominated, maybe I can come to LA just for that occasion.

Am I right in thinking chief lighting technician Brian Bansgrove (in the first item) is seen in the FOTR extra in the lake outside the doors of Moria?

On Oscar Day at this time I think I was walking around Hollywood and haunting the sidewalk across from the entrance to the Kodak Theatre!! *spasm* And during the Oscars, I was with a few friends doing this.
What an insanely over-the-top celebration! I'll never forget it... the best time of my life!! :D

My new tradition (three years so far) here in Chicagoland has been to light a nice fire and watch all three "Lord Of The Rings - Extended Edition" movies back-to-back-to back. Which I did yesterday.
To me, the more I watch it the more impressive "Lord Of The Rings" appears in regards to it's stature and place among to greats in movie history. This movie is and will forever be a landmark motion picture event that will be loved and watched again and again for years to come.

I don't see the Hobbit winning as many awards, since ROTK was, in a sense, being awarded for all three films, and the effort behind them.
What I hope to do, however, is be at the premiere in Wellington for either the Hobbit or its sequel. If not, I'll at least be old enough to attend any Oscar party. :P

Thank you Elf Wannabee! I've watched those snippets so many times I can hear their voices in my head right now as I read those speeches! Thank you SO MUCH!!!
I am at a friend's house watching the Oscars right now, an annual tradition, we've got the chocolate and pizza out etc, I brought the brownies:). (and yes, I found someone to record it). Barbara Walters I can pass up but we've got it on anyway. I love the Red Carpet though and all that. And I am SO buying the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack...I keep forgetting, have to write myself a reminder of that!!
I can't read those speeches without getting the shivers and imagning the Hobbit Oscar parties you guys have planned (don't we?) and seeing Guillermo and friends there. Of course we don't know what AMPAS might do but he and the gang will probably be nominated!! (and speaking of which, hope the Hellboy 2 crew win for Makeup but "Benjamin Button" will probably beat them...here's hoping *sigh*)
I am so envious of Gramma and all you guys who got to go. If there's an "IntoThe West " type of party I will SO be there:).
Oh..and on a *totally* unrelated note....I was going to reply to this thread anyway, but must make a note here....may as well do it here:

RotK was awarded anything pending for Fellowship and Two Towers.
Anyway, as I'm watching the Oscars, I was thinking of one thing. We'll be hoping for Hobbit Oscars *just* three years from now, in the 2012, 84th Awards. Because make no mistake, there'll be nominations. And, sorry to say it, but I have to throw it out there... there is a much larger chance that The Hobbit goes the Godfather's way than the Star Wars prequels' way. I think the Prequels' shadow is something Peter and Guillermo will have in mind each and every instant they work in these movies.
Anyway... quite moving the Heath Ledger thing. I admired his family's poise and determination. And as a friend and I said when we first heard of his passing away, we will always miss the wonderful Sir Ulrich von Liechtenstein.
Here's to Del Toro becoming the Irvin Kershner of Middle Earth!

and I was *SO* glad she did, I wonder how many people were left scratching their heads and going "Huh?" Hello, anybody remember a little film called "Heavenly Creatures"?
THAG YOU VERY BUCH.
Though I have to say, that even though I am so happy Kate finally won, her winning for "The Reader" was like Liz Taylor winning for "Butterfield 8." A totally mediocre movie that nobody cared much about much less expected anything to win for, that subsequently nobody would remember except for the fact that Liz Taylor won an acting Oscar in it. That's why it's on the library shelf, and that's why "The Reader", another humdrum entry in the Harvey Weinstein Book Of The Month Club, will be remembered. If anything, Kate should have won for "Eternal Sunshine...". Hey, don't get me wrong, but....!
One more mini rant before I celebrate. It seems Heath Ledger was indeed the sacrifical lamb, or was Hollywood making a statement about Proposition 8? Sean penn wins for "Milk", and the Origional Screenplay winner must have been openly gay. But Heath is DEAD, so let's give him an award b/c we feel a spasm of guilt about running him into the ground after shafting him in Brokeback Mountain. Oh, I'm sore. And that's NOT a Dark Knight fan talking--I've told you all how I felt about that. I agree his family had tremendous dignity and class. I'm just sore he's dead--it's still painful for me. So much wasted promise. Seeing all that brought it back for me.
But now to the great stuff....it looks as if I need to get out the salt shaker, b/c it's official: I have to eat my scarf after all, Mr. Rahman WON Score and Song for Slumdog Millionaire!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Esp "Jai Ro"! OMG I jumped up and down and screamed!!!!!!!!!! I was so happy!!!!!!!!!!!!*&#$^$!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (see my comments in OT about the clubfooted inbred Music Branch.) I LOVED the dance segments--started doing the moves on the couch--my friend got up and left the room, thought I was nuts, "You haven't seen it so shut up," I said:).
(EXCUSE ME while I have a Gramma-style meltdown--that's meant as a compliment of the highest order Gramma!!!!!!!!!!) 
And the stage piece with the Best Song nominees!! The Soweto Choir and Rahman trying not to dance!! OMG was that so COOL!!! And when he later thanked the people who put together the show for doing such a great job with the presentation of the dance numbers for everything--- that was pure class.best part of the night was best Picture when Danny Boyle had ALL the actors of SM onstage, esp the *utterly adorable* little ones. I have to find out that kid's name, his smile could melt a statue. I think big things are in store for him in India! What a crime they weren't nominated--they don't speak English I guess that was a requirement. But WOW was it deserved. The first time I saw the film, expect for the score, I wasn't impressed with the film as a whole, and thought the romance weak. The 2nd time, it hit me.
You know you're a helpess freak when you see Penepole Cruz win an Oscar (YES!!) and your mind flashes back to a segment you saw on Jimmy Kimmel--Guillermo talking about how his crew were evicted from a hotel in LA after the 2006 Oscar telecast b/c they made too much noise. And you imagine Del Toro watching the Oscars in Wellington (or think "maybe he's there in LA?") and thinking of his reaction maybe watching the Cruz speech (she finished in Spanish)...ha ha....I'm hopeless
As for The Hobbit...part of my excitement over stuff like the Rahman win was wondering if Hollywood would ever overcome its seeming aversion to non-whites winning major awards...in branches other than acting....stuff like, well, Editing and Score etc....this makes you go, "well, maybe they won't have a problem with a Mexican guy doing Tolkien." In my crazy mind, this could be an issue! I don't think, if TH were up next year, it would win anywhere near as much. It may well be nominated just as much if it;s good, but depending on what it's like...will they still see it as a kid's film? Who knows. I don't think history will repeat itself. Then again, lightening may well strike twice. And that'll be unexpected, for the Academy most of all.
Nobody really knows.

Andrew Lesnie kisses on the cheek. Lesnie and others talks about him in the commentaries, too. Such a sad loss. So many were lost. I always feel sad for Peter that he couldn't share of this all with parents and they didn't see how their belief in their son touched the world; but I think they know :)

because that night was the first time I ever met any TORnsibs in person. Poppyroper (who I haven't seen here in a long time) had a party at her house. I'd never been to an in-person meeting with Internet friends before, and I was pretty nervous, even though I had my family with me. I knew I was at the right place when I saw the sign on the door: "No Admittance Except on Party Business". :-D I met Altaira for the first time as we were walking up the driveway. I think that was when I met solikat and gimpboy too. Poppyroper's mom actually posted a bit on TORn after that, but I don't remember her nickname.
It was kind of disappointing that first year, so I didn't get excited about the Oscars the next year, but the third year was the payoff. I just watched them at home, but of course I was online with several of you commenting as the evening went on.

I really do think his parents were there with Peter that night - there's a wonderful picture of Peter looking down upon a row of Oscars lined along a table - and for a moment he looks so distant. I remember looking at this and thinking he's not alone right now - they are with him. (and in contrast to popular belief, no I'm not crazy )
