I get your point, but I don't think it's really true to say that critics need to understand the source material to "get" the point of the film. I think the film is strongest when it takes advantage of truly cinematic techniques to tell the story, not necessarily when it's sticking to the book. I will agree with you that there is something a bit "off" with AUJ - something that, while I do enjoy the film, lessens my enthusiasm for it just a bit.

I DO think that the design and performance are pretty terrible. He looks nothing like anything else we've seen in the these 4 Middle-earth films, but more like something in those terrible Dungeons & Dragons movies. And the performance is very cartoonish, very comic book, like it was meant to appeal to teen-age boys (i.e. "bad ass"). And the character doesn't really make any sense-- he spends the whole movie hunting down Thorin after decades of seething hatred and desire for revenge, but then orders an underling to kill him?! Knowing what we know about the production, the whole thing just reeks of hasty decision making. But even without that, Azog is a jarring presence in the film that seems at odds (at least to me) with the entire aesthetic of Peter Jackson's Middle-earth (not to mention Tolkien's). And all that is without mentioning Tolkien's epic history for the character and PJ/PB/FW's detrimental changes to that history. Love your posts btw.

And thank you I often greatly enjoy your posts as well. I just hope this Azog mess doesn't get exponentially worse. I DO think that the design and performance are pretty terrible.
