could have been a bit more majestic and impressive, I'd say on that one, although I like Dain himself a lot. Especially when there are gigantic beasts all over the place in all six M-e films (given the far back evolutive times, I suppose), I really can't understand why he - and he alone - was denied one as his properly kingly mount, and had to appear in front of all on the battlefield, riding this ridiculously small pig that seems about to collapse at any moment under the sheer weight of his master!!!

Maybe I would like it better if it would LOOK better. For me it's cheap/cheesy and it was unnecessary to alter the storyline.

I enjoyed his character after I first saw him when I saw AUJ in theaters. I was afraid that he was going to be a scary character, like some of the orcs from LOTR's. But I was glad that he was jovial and more of laid back person! That is one of my reasons why he is one of my favorite villains!
"Keen, heart-piercing was her song as the song of the lark that rises from the gates of night and pours its voice among the dying stars, seeing the sun behind the walls of the world; and the song of Lúthien released the bonds of winter, and the frozen waters spoke, and flowers sprang from the cold earth where her feet had passed."

Very much in keeping with the dwarven style they created for Erebor and clearly a portrait of Thror, just like the stone one against which Thorin is framed so memorably. But each to his own....
For still there are so many things that I have never seen: in every wood and every spring there is a different green. . .

Why you're unable to enjoy TH because of the gold melting unrealistically(?) and an unrealistic arrow flight. Do these things really matter? They don't affect the story
It was a foggy day in London, and the fog was heavy and dark. Animate London, with smarting eyes and irritated lungs, was blinking, wheezing, and choking; inanimate London was a sooty spectre, divided in purpose between being visible and invisible, and so being wholly neither. - Our Mutual Friend, Charles Dickens. It is said by the Eldar that in water there lives yet the echo of the Music of the Ainur more than in any substance that is in this Earth; and many of the Children of Ilúvatar hearken still unsated to the voices of the Sea, and yet know not for what they listen. - The Silmarillion, J. I do understand Silmaril's objection to Bard's jury-rigged, Rube Goldberg contraption that probably should have never worked when Jackson could have just allowed him to use the foreshadowed windlance.

Of course Smaug was a bit smaller there than in the films. But wouldn't taking the even larger beast down with an ordinary bow be a more impressive accomplishment, not less?

This is one instance where Peter Jackson's sense of humor overcomes his directorial sense. Members of the production team have related the story of how they designed a big, fierce-looking boar for Dain only to have Jackson continue to have them change it: making it smaller and cuter each time because he thought it was funnier that way.

I didn't expect it to be on purpose!!! Well, it is indeed funnier that way, for sure! Bravo then to Dain and the actor playing him for having managed to look impressive enough anyway, and have the cheek of even mocking 'the princess'!!! Thank you for this piece of info, when I have had no access yet myself to any of the appendices of thes three Hobbit films...
