"The Eagles are coming!"

In ROTK, (book/film) Pippin exclaims, "The Eagles are coming!" When I first saw this, I couldn't help but grin. I pictured what it would be like in the film adaptation of "The Hobbit". Would it be built up the way it was in ROTK? Hopefully it is, because I am very fond of this quote. Is there anyone else who hopes for a great dramatic moment when Bilbo exclaims "The Eagles are coming!" ? I sure do.

I want scenes of Eagles doing fly-bys of the marching Orcs, keeping tabs on them...I want to see them gathering and gathering...and then the moment when Bilbo suddenly sees them, and they swarm in and start picking off Orcs on the mountainside, the "good guys" version of the Nazgūl attacking Minas Tirith!

...I was really surprised because I forgot all about the Eagles during that climactic battle. But when the moth shows up to Gandalf with that familiar "Nature Theme", I suddenly remember the last line from the first half of the book where Pippin says that line. That gave me loads of goosebumps followed by a huge awe once the Eagles attacked the Nazguls! I remember in the DVD appendices where the editors where cutting the film and once they're in the part where Pippin says, "Eagles! The Eagles are coming!", they said, "What? What eagles?" LOL!

But shouldn't there be some foreshadowing of their involvement, so it doesn't come off looking like a deus ex machina?

I for one cannot wait to see the Eagles in The Hobbit. While we saw them in LoTR, this time they will be a little more involved. I think the Battle of the Five Armies has huge potential on screen, if its done right, we're in for a treat! As well as the Eagles, I'm quite looking forward to the arrival of Beorn on the scene!

They would likely come to the rescue the way they do earlier with the Wargs.

in the forest tonight?" The eucatastrophe with the Wargs/Goblins situation, is that although we know the Eagles are investigating it, their nabbing Gandalf and the Dwarves (and Bilbo) just in the nick of time is unexpected. So I guess my thought is: should there be a similar foreshadowing before the Battle of Five Armies - or, since the Eagles have already been involved, would their sudden appearance with no foreshadowing be able to be done without the feel of deus ex machina?

to be an eucatastrophic moment by Tolkien when he read the story, a few years after its initial publication. I know that for me, the reappearance of the Eagles is more of an "Of course! Where have you guys been?" moment in the book! But I'm concerned as to how this would seem, translated to motion picture. I should think that it would need to be executed as "Eagles join the fray" rather than "Eagles save the day", to keep up the tone of the battle.

No ... not the Band, the Eagles! I remember my husband (completely non-bookish) leaning over and asking "what's up with the eagles? And if they came at this battle why not at Minas Tirith?" It would really be great if they could establish a better arc for the Eagles presence in RoTK by bringing them out a little in this prequel film. Probably a tricky prospect with time restraints and such, but a girl can wish. It would be great to have someone [a.k.a. my husband] have a little AHAH! moment about the Eagles in RoTK after watching The Hobbit and The Movie Yet to Have a Name. Actually, I just wanna have something similar to an I-told-you-so moment. Hee hee

We saw the Eagles in FOTR, but then we see them at the end of ROTK. It'd be that kind of feeling I guess, y'know?

...from that moth fluttering by Gandalf's face, that winged help is wafting its way to them! I wonder what the impact of that scene would have been, had we seen the Eagles suddenly attack the Nazgūl, without that small moment? It's hard to try to visualize it now, but I wonder if that airborne attack would have had a similar impact, without that little "hint" immediately before it happened...

Alright, I know for a fact it may not be like this. It veers away from the book a little, but to make it stay in sequence with the LOTR films, it would be done sort of like this. Now in The Hobbit, during the scene with the Wargs, we could have Gandalf, Bilbo, and the Dwarves huddled in the tree. While all hell is breaking loose, we could have a close-up of Gandalf, eyes closed, making a suttle "prayer", much like he did in Orthanc in FOTR to the moth. His eyes would open, and the moth could fly across screen. We would then bring in the Eagles who bring them to safety. Now, to make the Eagles' entrance during The Battle of the Five Armies more dramatic, (and not as a deus ex machina) we could have Bilbo observing the battle the way he was in the book (atleast, that's the way I remember it). When all hope is lost, we could have the moth glide over Bilbo's head. Bilbo watches it as it flys into the clouds, and mere seconds later, the Eagles burst from the heavens. "The Eagles are coming!" It's not that original, but it will answer most of our questions . . . I think. What do you think?

There are 3 times during this battle that I want to have sprung onto us with the same impact at the book. When Beorn rages through the enemy coming out of nowhere and resemble Smaug to me in his ferocity and power; when Thorin and his people break through the makeshift doorway of the caves in full armour and splendour of their forefathers, and here with Bilbo looking up and seeing the eagles come to their rescue once again. Oh yeah... this battle is going to be as thrilling as anything on Pelennor or the Deep. *twitch*

But I have been wondering lately about the Misty Mountains. When did the Eagles settle there? Could it be that Manwe sent them after the Balrog arose again? And was that the time when Beorn's people where driven from the Mountains?
