I've been reading various Hobbit movie sites and keep coming across talk of Aragorn, i.e. "Who will play Aragorn?" What the HELL has Aragorn got to do with The Hobbit?! Thanks.

I see... I assume there's been no word as to the content or focus of film 2. When I heard that there would be two films I thought they'd simply split The Hobbit in two. If that won't be the case, what would they do? I mean, there isn't any canon I'm aware of that's linked closely enough to The Hobbit to justify calling "a second Hobbit film." What gives? I expect there'll be Orcs with eyes on the palms of their hands...

What we know is that the filmmakers have the rights for The Hobbit and a 2nd movie based on Tolkien's world. Anything in The Hobbit or LOTR, including the Appendices of LOTR is open for use. What they might use, we don't know, nor do the filmmakers based on what we're hearing. GdT himself said: At this stage we are all finding out things- I believe, at the moment, that THE HOBBIT is better contained in a single film and kept brisk and fluid with no artificial "break point" but that too may change. One of the reasons why I am comfortable doing this is because nothing, at any point, has been presented as "contractual". Quite the contrary, everything is genuine and exciting in that Blessed Island at the edge of the world! I am pretty sure that if we dont find a great F2 we will do only a single film or if we find that if the HOBBIT cannot be contained in a single film and that there is, in fact, a natural break, we may end up with two. You can read the full text of his comment here.

I am not optimistic about the prospect of a "Hobbit 2." Truth be told, I don't think any of them ever should have been made. Now, don't get me wrong - I think they did as good a job as could be done with LotR (with a few minor(?) exceptions - Frodo in Osgiliath?! What the hell was that? I laughed out loud in the theatre when Sam said, "By rights we shouldn't even be here.") I just think it's too much of an infringement. It upsets me to think of all the people who may have been inspired by the films to read Tolkien, but will understandably never be able to separate Frodo Baggins from Elijah Wood. Thanks for the info.

I'm one of those who saw the movies then read the books . If it hadn't been for the movies my Tolkien knowledge would have stopped at the 'The Hobbit' . Don't be upset for me and other 'movie first' folks as I think the movies have enhanced my enjoyment of the books. I've seen enough non-movie art/pictures of Tolkien's world to separate the actors and the characters .

calls Aragorn "Dunedan" and gives Frodo for not knowing what Dunedan means, man of the west, westernesse. Bilbo knows his name as Aragorn and as Dunedan, since I'm sure the Elves also called him that after Elrond had revealed to Estel his true name and heritage. Bilbo settled in Rivendell in 3002 by which time Aragorn was not a permenant resident of Rivendell, though I am sure that Aragorn visited Rivendell when he was not out helping Gandalf, hunting Gollum or doing any of his other duties.

Me too, Nimloth, I saw the movies and then the books. The movies were amazing for me as a movie firster, I thought the story couldn't get any better. Of course then I read the books and they were even better!! But I realized there were some things that could have been changed. I think a lot of people who were just looking to see a good movie, went to see something that inspired them to read a master piece. Even if I hated the movie( I don't I love it), if it inspired people to read the books, who would have never otherwise, then I'd be happy another Tolkien reader was born. I think Elijah was the perfect Frodo... He was Frodo to me. His portrayal was incredible in spite of minor problems in his script. Love him :] Great to hear your opinion, Alowishus and welcome! .

Arwen's daughter has it right, imho. Those who talk about Aragorn coming to The Hobbit film is referring to what we're anticipating for Film2 (touching of events during the 60 years between The Hobbit and LotR). Who knows... maybe a younger Aragorn could show up in the background if The Hobbit shows the White Council meeting ;) The possibilities are intriguing! I'm glad you've found your way here!
Trust him... The Hobbit is coming! "Barney Snow was here." ~Hug like a hobbit!~ "In my heaven..." TORn's Observations Lists
