My ranking would be: An Unexpected Journey: 9 Desolation of Smaug: 9 Battle of the Five Armies: 8.5 Fellowship of the Ring: 9.5 The Two Towers: 10 The Return of the King: 9.5 So I rate them all pretty high, with only Battle of the Five Armies tailing(still love it though!) Great movies, love them all dearly! As I said before, welcome to TORn!

1. The Return of the King (A +) 2. The Fellowship of the Ring (A +) 3. The Desolation of Smaug (A +) 4. The Battle of the Five Armies (A) 5. The Two Towers (A) 6. An Unexpected Journey (A) I pretty much think it's the best series of tales ever put to film. Yep. Still have to finish that colossal essay explaining why and post it here sometime soon. Just a few write-ups to go (I cover both the TEs and the EEs extensively, so yeah, it's huge).

So I will rank only Hobbit films. An Unexpected Journey - best one, no doubt. The Desolation of Smaug - things go downhill after the Legolas introduction, meh! The Battle of the Five Armies - Thorin and Bilbo's relationship bring tears to my eyes, so powerful. The action scenes are funny and even scary in some parts

I love them all SO MUCH! But all of them have a few quibbles, some more than others, so let's see if I can be "objective" In the order they were filmed: Fellowship - probably 9.8, maybe higher? There are a couple of scenes that drag, particularly that Arwen/Aragorn scene before the Council, but that movie was also my first introduction to Middle-earth so it gets really high marks. Two Towers - 10.0 - absolutely my FAVORITE of all 6 films. Edoras was just magical, and there's something about that battle of Helm's Deep that just sticks with me. I don't think anything will ever top it, not even Pelenor Fields. Return of the King - probably 9.3, because the ending always makes me so sad. Perfect, but sad. An Unexpected Journey - also 9.8; I think it's nearly perfect. Yes, some of the running scenes were a bit too long, and I didn't care for the "nantucket sleighride" when the bridge broke off in the Goblin tunnels. But there was so much GOOD STUFF! The "Good Morning" scene, Thorin singing in Bilbo's house, the Trollshaws, Bilbo with Gollum - can't get any better than this! Desolation of Smaug - 9.9, only because I won't rate it as high as Two Towers, but of the Hobbit trilogy this is DEFINITELY my favorite. Beorn's house, lovely ponies, Thranduil, the "aren't you going to search me" line (don't care, it cracks me up!), Barrels, Leggy & Tauriel fighting in Laketown (heck, Laketown was also an awesome set), and the Ultimate reason: Smaug! Best. Dragon. Ever!!! Battle of 5 Armies - 9.1. I still love the movie, but it had the most problems. Still, the good stuff: Acorn scene, Bilbo & Bofur, "Am I not the King?"; Dwalin confronting Thorin; the Mithril vest; Dain's army & the twiddly-widdly's, etc. And I know not everyone cared for the Ice Chariot scene (even PJ admitted he was being self-indulgent), but I loved it! Also the ice fight between Thorin & Azog was both clever and original. Still, I had a problem with Azog breaking thru the ice. Also cutting from one fight scene to another, too much Alfrid, & some other quibbles. But it's still a great movie, and the first 10 minutes of Smaug strafing Laketown was worth the cost of admission, IMO.

The grading scale I employ (F - A +) uses 13 numbers, of course, so I guess I technically do give them all 10's.

As you're asking for rankings on all the films I've moved this discussion to the Main board. My rankings would be: FOTR - 9.5 ROTK - 9 AUJ - 7.5 TTT - 7 DOS - 7 BOTFA - 5.5 (I got bored - the movie had more battles than it had heart)
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded beggar with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. As far as I'm concerned, the Lord of the Rings Movies are all ten out of tens. This is probably because they were my first exposure to Middle-earth and because I saw them when I was young, and so lack a critical eye with regards to how good they are as movies Not so for The Hobbit movies. I love them all, but if I'm going to be critical I'd rank them as follows: Unexpected journey: 10 Desolation of Smaug: 7 (pretty much entirely due to Thorin's Asbestos shield and the scenes involving the Jell-O gold). Battle of the Five Armies: 7. Too much battle, although I don't know what else would have been expected. I liked the interpersonal drama that occurred with Thorin's dragon sickness though.

1. The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers - 11/10. The theatrical version is my favorite film of all time. It's also one of the only movies where achingly slow pacing doesn't bother me. 2. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - 10/10. Basically the entire movie is a series of awe-inspiring, slack-jaw, wide-eyed wonder scenes. 3. The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies - 9.8/10. Would be a 10/10 but I thought there something off from about the 10-minute mark to the 29-minute mark, from the end of Fire and Water to the start of Attack on Dol Guldur. Other than that, I think it's wonderful, tense, brilliantly acted, and filled with emotion. It also has one of the best "falling-action" sections of any film I've ever seen. 4. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey - 9.8/10. This is also almost perfect. I really have no complaints at all. Great acting, great pacing, great sets/action scenes/visual effects. Basically everything about this movie, I love. 5. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring - 9.7/10. This movie is great, it introduced me to Middle-Earth. It actually might be the most influential movie I've ever seen and has affected how I watch everything else. It's only lower on the list, because of how amazing the others are as well. I suppose the theatrical version does drag a tiny little bit after Moria and before Amon Hen, but it's not that big a deal. My 7-year-old mind was blown when I realized that the movie was 3 hours long. It flies right by. 6. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug - 9.3/10. I'd rank this movie higher if it had better pacing. In my opinion, the first 45 minutes or so of the film are way too fast and felt like they were rushing. The Feast of Starlight scene was the first time I actually started loving this one. That said, from the Feast of Starlight to the end was just as amazing as the rest of the series. Definitely still an "A" grade.

FOTR-10 TTT-9.9 ROTK-10 AUJ-9 DOS-9 BOFA-8.5 I love them all, I truly do. I can't put the Hobbit films on the epicness of LOTR, but I still adore them. If you asked me to rank the music scores for all of them they would all be 10s, because what Howard Shore has created is incredible. I'm also quite forgiving to the issues that the LOTR (not many issues at all) and the Hobbit films have that people complain about, because I just love being in this world, with these characters. I also can be fairly understanding because I've watched all the appendices so many times I at least see the reasoning and rationale even if I don't agree with it.

FOTR: 10 - What it may suffer from in lack of book fidelity it more than earns back from the pure spine-tingling chills of seeing Middle Earth come to light, and the relief of finally knowing the movies were going to be great and not a complete embarrassing disaster. TTT: 6 - There's much to love about TTT. Edoras and Helm's Deep are right at the top. But when I think of TTT, I can't get past the crushing disappointment and shock of watching Faramir's character being assassinated and realizing mid-movie that no, these writers and directors didn't actually get it. On the plus side, because I was determined not to be blindsided like that again with ROTK, I found TORN! ROTK: 9. Yes - whenever I think about watching ROTK, I cringe at the thought of watching the Gandalf vs WitchKing and scrubbing bubble scenes. But oh, oh, oh - the Riders of Rohan and their horns! And the Theoden, Eowyn, Merry and Witchking scene - so good! AUJ: 4 So much garbage added to stretch from a short book to 9 hours of movie. The great joy of seeing the beginning scenes of the book slid to abject disgust by the end of the movie. I bought the DVD, and I'll always be disappointed I did. IDonTEvenCareEnoughToKnowTheInitialsOfTheSecondAndThirdMovies: 3. Sigh. Last hobbit horror: 2 I'm perfectly willing to admit that the scores for the Hobbit movies are lower than they would be if I was judging them purely based as movies. But I simply cannot separate out my extreme disappointment at what was done to one of my favorite books. Notta
