I immediately saw the image of Gimli blowing that horn. Great shot here too..

I thought it looked a bit odd for an ibex (have recently worked on a book on these critters, and their horns are different, more swept back). It's an impressive beast, nonetheless.
...bighorn sheep, not an ibex, is not nearly as big as they make it appear on the picture. It;s all a matter of perspective.

I've also seen visuals of 'the foe's' armies marching that appear to replicate what was done in LotR. I don't know why all the need to constantly tie in to LotR – perhaps because they have run out of ideas, or want to replicate the success of LotR and think such references are the way to do it, or they have lost confidence in themselves to a certain extent because they are making up so much new material? Would have preferred these films to have just subtle, not forced references to LotR, or references where they are really needed, and for the Hobbit films to stand much more on their own.
I am not sure why PJ & co. feel the tie-ins are so important - IMO Rivendell, Gimli's axe, Legolas - that's plenty already. And while Mist & Shadows IS beautiful re the trailer, and haunting, at times I feel a tinge of unease. I would have liked to have heard the dwarves sing, one last time. And it be something new...

You are joking surely! A shot of an Orc army marching... THEY ARENT CONFIDENT WITH THEMSELVES THEYRE COPYING LOTR! Do you need someone to point how much of the material is new an different to anything in LOTR, or does the slightest similarity make you angry?

I like Bombur, he's been a fun character despite never saying anything. I wonder if this is how Thorin's company will announce that they are joining the battle. I really don't think of this a callback to Lord of The Rings. It is similar, but a horn is a horn. Horns are common. The Mirkwood Elves had them in DoS and that wasn't a callback.

there are bound to be similarities between the two trilogies. But we don't even really know the context behind this image. Is Bombur letting out a rallying cry, before a major offensive by the dwarves, similar to what Gimli did in TTT? Is he blowing this horn to warn of advancing enemies? Is he blowing the horn to signify victory? I'm not ready to call this an intentional reference to LOTR until I know what's going on here. That being said, even if it were a callback to LOTR...I imagine this scene is at best a few seconds long, and certainly not longer than a minute. It shouldn't really detract from the film.
