Jack Black as Bilbo Can't Post

I would like to recommend Jack Black for the role of Bilbo in the upcoming Hobbit movie. I think he could do a great job. He has a past working relationship with Peter Jackson, he is the right size and age, and has the talent to display the many facets of Bilbo.

However, an "unknown" actor might be better suited to making the movie work.

Hmmmm [In reply to] Can't Post

While I can’t picture Jack Black as Bilbo I can definitely see him as one of the dwarves. He’d be that one dwarf that instigated the plate tossing and generally gets into trouble first….the trolls…the spiders. Not to get off topic but I do hope they pick some great actors for EACH and EVERY dwarf. I don’t want to see just two or three perfect dwarves and then the rest just being ok. The race deserves it after all.

You're totally thinking of the Council of Elrond parody he did with Sarah Michelle Gellar, right?

Bob Shaye as Smaug [In reply to] Can't Post

You realize that there are about 12 o 13 of the dwarves in the party. That's a lot of actors necessary. Only probably three or four are likely to be focused on in the short time of the film.. there just isn't time in a feature film to give 13 actors time to shine, so I don't think the casting will need to be too important for most of the dwarves.

I'm not a Jack Black fan, but I can see him making a better dwarf than a hobbit. I still say Martin Freeman should be Bilbo. Maybe give Bob Shaye a role as Smaug too. He has made that role his own. :-)

Dwarven underdogs [In reply to] Can't Post

Me too. I always felt the dwarves were under-explored and certainly the underdogs in Tolkien fandom... always in the shadow of the ninja-bad-ass like elves. I'd love to see the dwarves getting drunk as well as throwing down some heavy axe and hammer action vs Trolls and goblins. Who should play Thorin? It's a pity John Rhys-Davies probably won't be able to be in the film. Although he probably wouldn't want to have all that rash causing makeup back on his face anyway. They are going to need a huge makeup crew for 13 dwarves!

Jack Black? [In reply to] Can't Post

I'm much more into hobbits myself.

I agree with all the people who said Jack Black would be pretty horrible Bilbo, but an entertaining dwarf. Isn't he a bit big for Bilbo anyway or do I just imagine him taller than he really is? The hobbit actors in LOTR needed to be under 170 cm tall.

I seem to remember John Rhys Davies swearing he'd never play a dwarf again and I can't say I blame him for that. I also think they shouldn't cast John for Gloin, Orlando for Thranduil etc. They are already Gimli and Legolas. It would be too distracting.

I agree... [In reply to] Can't Post

I hope they don't cast folks from LotR as their respective relatives. I'm kinda thinking JRD might be able to get away with it because he would be under so much make-up. But nobody else could.

For Gondor!

Add to that list Zac Efron, George Clooney, Toby McGuire, any of the US actors we hear about ad nauseum. My head would explode.
If not Holme, can anyone think of any short, fabulous, middle-aged British actors who'd be good? The ones I'm thinking of are either too young or too well positioned in their HPotter film roles.... although Gary Oldman is really versatile...
I'm not at all familiar with this same type within the ranks of Oz or Kiwi actors.

In all respect... but that's hilarious... [In reply to] Can't Post

So no... no thanks.
LIke someone has said, should be a relatively unknown actor... Bilbo really needs to be someone who really knows Bilbo and can do a great yet subtle job.

"By Elbereth and Luthien the fair, you shall have neither the Ring nor me!" ~Frodo

"And then Gandalf arose and bid all men rise, and they rose, and he said: 'Here is a last hail ere the feast endeth. Last but not least. For I name now those who shall not be forgotten and without whose valour nought else that was done would have availed; and I name before you all Frodo of the Shire and Samwise his servant. And the bards and the minstrels should give them new names: Bronwe athan Harthad and Harthad Uluithiad , Endurance beyond Hope and Hope Unquenchable.." ~Gandalf, The End of the Third Age , from The History of Middle Earth series

LOTR stars [In reply to] Can't Post

how would you know who the dwarves were?
Orlando as Legolas, why wouldn't he be in the film? Cue hero sequence.
do you need to change Bilbo, as gandalf said-"you haven't changed a bit"
You could write in a role for Arwen.

on LOTR they resisted mega stars and they should again.

at last a film with dwarves

Aren't the LotR stars "mega stars"? [In reply to] Can't Post

But aren't all of the LOTR stars "mega stars" by now? Should they still work them in and cast relative unknowns in the other parts?

Myself, I would hate it if they filled the dwarven roles with LOTR cameos. And writing a bigger part for Legolas... no. Just no. It is completely unnecessary.

bigger part for Legolas--like Arwen? Someone has to lead the faeries, sorry, elves at the battle of 5 armies and even a king needs a lieutanant. You will need more personalities in the film than exist in the body of the story. Wouldn't you expand Gandalfs role?

For Mega stars, read major hollywood hacks.

I'm sorry, but Holm is too old now [In reply to] Can't Post

I'd love an Orlando cameo, but it wouldn't need to be a big hero moment. More like a nod to the fans of the LOTR films and there's nothing wrong about having the Elf King's son hanging around in his house.

I have nothing against Ian Holm, but Bilbo in the Hobbit is in his early fifties and has action sequences. Holm is over 70 and has prostate problems. I'm sure there are lots of short, fabulous people in the UK that aren't superstars yet.

He was also too old in LotR. [In reply to] Can't Post

In LotR, Bilbo at age 111 should look like Bilbo at age 50, which in hobbit terms means that he should look like a human would look at age 35. He doesn't appreciably age in the books until after the Ring is destroyed.

Now in The Hobbit, Bilbo arguably could look older than he looks in LotR, because in the earlier book, Tolkien gives absolutely no indication that hobbit lifespans average 100 years. But he should not look as old as Holm (whose work I inevitably enjoy).
