Is that a Raccoon I see in your avatar, or is it a Red Panda? (I have a thing for Raccoons at the moment, especially if they go by the name of Rocket.)

One of my many favorite animals. I love raccoons too. I haven't seen GotG yet, but can't wait to see Rocket from the trailer. He looks like someone who can kick butt *and* is adorable all rolled into one. But then, I've just got a weak spot for animals, especially cute ones in general. That shot of the Gypsy Vanner (I think that's their name) horses in DoS just made my heart flutter. They're absolute beauties.

There isn't a smiley with a big enough smile to express what I feel. Thank you for the compliments! I really didn't think that this would go over well. Five minutes after I posted it I was thinking of removing it; thought it sounded too ridiculous. (Which it does, but seeing as that was the intent, I guess I shouldn't be too worried.) I've never thought poetry to be my strong suit (nor do I love it that much; I've always thought that poetry's far too short -- give me a novel I can lose myself in!), but I've found it's excellent if you're trying to go back to sleep. Just sort of relaxes the mind. I couldn't think of anything for that "the Lake will shine and burn" quote until I remembered the end . But I thought it was perfect. And, yes, I will definitely be getting stock in Kleenexes before December. By the way, anyone figured out the conundrum over watching 3D with eyeglasses? I really don't want soggy popcorn... I'm glad to know that my poem will be remembered. And you bookmarked it! I've still got warm flutteries going through my chest ten minutes after I read your post. And very, very nice pic at the bottom of your post. I've often wondered how one is so lucky to have hair that always looks magnificent. I look like a drowned rat when my hair gets wet and although it's string straight with a few measly attempts at waves, it still manages to look like a nightmare in the morning. Ah well...Grass is always greener on the other side, eh?

Lovely poem Arveldis - I'd say that's spot on. (and don't worry, poems are more artistic when they don't rhyme ). And am I sure Avandel has demonstrated, no need to step back on your posts, especially when discussing such an important and earth-shattering subject. There's always more to say about Thorin's hair. We must take every opportunity to wallow in the #majesty and wonder of the glorious locks.

But perhaps it is for the best, in that IMO our Mountain King pretty much torpedoed any future film character of having a decadent mane that is even remotely comparable. There can be only one, but I must take joy in that I was here to EXPERIENCE the glory of it. *SQUUUEEE*! Exactly. No one else stands a chance. We have seen the pinnacle and can only revel in the knowledge that we were here to witness it in the making.
(Yep, the PINNACLE of PILOSITY has been witnessed in my lifetime ) Pilosity eh? Who knew there was such a word to describe the perfection of Thorin's hair? Learn something new every day!

I've never been too great at rhyming and always found it to be a stumper when having to do poetry assignments in school. Online rhyming thesauri were my friends then. I don't hate it; it just requires a lot of head bashing. Glad to know it's not required. I can't take full credit for the poem. Tolkien was the one who wrote the original (must give credit where credit is due, after all). I just...modified...it to fit a subject that's near and dear to us all. Your whole post just made me crack up. In a good way, of course. Yes, Thorin's hair deserves about ten more threads. And maybe even those wouldn't do it justice...

You must go and see GotG quickly, before it leaves cinemas! A shameless diversion from the topic, I know, but the thread is about hair, and Raccoons and Red Pandas both have beautiful hair (or fur). Also, my favourite character (not) did say 'A diversion' in RotK. By the way, apropos of nothing, you probably know that Red Pandas are not classified among the bears at all (they used to be), but are now the only members of their own family (the Ailuridae). I agree about those horses in DoS – a beautiful breed, especially when seen free, something I'd have liked to have seen a bit more of.

I wish I could see GotG in theaters. It's probably out of them by now where I live, though. Into the Storm left about a month ago, if that tells you anything, and DoS didn't last long at all. I'll have to get it on Netflix. I was just going to say that. It's technically still hair, so we're not totally off topic yet. I vaguely remembered that red pandas were a part of that family (didn't realize that they have their very own, though), but either forgot (quite possible) or never learned that they were a part of the bear family before. That's interesting. I definitely wouldn't have minded seeing those horses again either. Now to go a little more on topic: it is true that the hair is better in The Hobbit movies. Even the animals have nicer hair! From the ponies in their adorable fuzzy suits to Beorn's horses, everything's been kicked up a notch.

LOL being Thorin enthrall'd it's a miracle I even notice there is other cast (hilariously a fan on a different board suggested imagining a movie that was 2 -1/2 hours of nothing BUT Thorin - works for me. Thorin braiding his hair, Thorin having breakfast, Thorin majestically walking, Thorin brooding, a little sword practice, Thorin eating lunch, Thorin brooding some more, Thorin stepping over some prostrate females he accidentally smiled at, Thorin tossing his hair back, Thorin having tea... ) Sounds like the perfect movie for me!

Just as I feel that for just a few more precious seconds of that compelling dark-shadow silky mane, the DOS EE has paid for itself many times over. Merely thinking about the effect of a gentle breeze playfully swirling the soft espresso magnificence is more than enough for me to open my wallet.

GotG is still going strong here in London, where I live. Into the Storm disappeared ages ago, but GotG is regarded as a very good film by many, so it still has a couple of weeks or so to go before disappearing from cinemas. Do try and see it if you can – I don't think you will be disappointed. With all the horrible stuff that is going on in the world today, it is great to see something that leaves you with happy feelings! (I know I am off topic, but since this thread is no longer on page one and most people probably won't notice it, I'm hoping I'm OK.)

The movies in theaters are usually listed in the Sunday papers, so I'll check tomorrow. I'd use the theater websites, but they're a little hard to navigate and for some reason aren't always entirely accurate. I agree completely about the need for feel-good films in this day and age. With what's happening over in the Middle East, I think everyone could benefit from a little joy and humor. That's what I liked about GotG when I saw the trailer: it wasn't as dark as Star Trek (not that Star Trek was bad) and had a certain feeling of levity to it. At this point, I don't think it really matters if we're off topic. I doubt anyone else is still reading this thread.

GotG is much better than any of the other comic-book super-hero films (and Star Trek). It is really original and quirky and has a great balance of funny, sad and action sequences. I also like it that the actors were largely unknown (at least to me). It caught me completely by surprise, since I wasn't expecting anything at all from it, having not read anything about it before going to see it (it was a way of filling time). I think I'll be seeing it again this coming week! We can see it later on the small screen, but it is a film well worth seeing on the large screen at least once. I hope you manage to see it. :)

Pony footage is a huge question for me re the DOS EE

I definitely wouldn't have minded seeing those horses again either. While not covered in fuzz as in AUJ, there seems to be a general consensus that more seconds with Beorn's ponies is something quite desirable . The beauty and spirit of those few seconds of pony footage is something that seems to have struck folks as strongly as the appearance of FIGWIT years ago in LOTR.
I'm bummed, I could have started a petition for more pony footage in the EE ! OT but *shrug* it has a hairy character - I still haven't seen GOTG yet, haven't had time to go to the movies. But I will see it one way or the other.

I hope you get a chance to see it in theaters - it's a lot of fun. Also, re your comment about that Annabelle trailer, I had to see it 5 times in the theater, before GOTG and ITS, and on first sight of that creepy doll, I think I yelled out some like "OMG, are you kidding me, it's evil!" and refused to watch it anymore. And now the trailer is on tv, and I have to avoid that too. Slightly back on topic, yes, it would be nice to see more of those ponies, maybe we'll get more when Gandalf is talking to Beorn outside.

Which has a handy pointy end, and a flat end, and you can also use it to crack nuts. Seeing as it is the holiday season coming up . LOL when I see creepy possessed dolls I also think of all the useful household chemicals like the eye-watering bathroom cleaner. Re Annabelle you might enjoy this critic: http://www.mania.com/..._article_140616.html That is a good point about the ponies as it looks like we will get more Beorn (sad it may be, but I also like to think of the WETA folks right now are at their computers, lovingly making sure the BOFA we see in battle will be as jaw-dropping in his way as Smaug, along with the war goats and boars. Which are all suitably HAIRY.) And speaking of hair, that's another thing I am interested in seeing - how do the dwarves obtain the goats for that cart? In the meantime, sometimes I just need a dose of the Magnificent One's darkling locks , so hafta re-watch the EE trailer and the clip. PS - no, I haven't seen GOTG yet. Bummer.

WARNING! The management once again requests that the susceptible *hair freaks* and those with heart conditions please unfold your paper bags, place over nose and mouth, and take several deep breaths. For those particularly sensitive, we request that you place soft pillows on the floor before further viewing. Thank you for your consideration.
A single EMOTIVE scene, in theater only a moment that carries us along to the ratcheting danger, and yet, a moment when broken down frame-by-frame, once again is completely illustrative of the incomparable ebony lush sumptuousness that cloaks about the luminous skin (here gilded by silver moonlight), noble features, and hauntingly beautiful eyes of the Mountain King. This scene is particularly noteworthy in that even without the normally-present wind machine (probably being prepped for the next shot), we still can readily observe the magnificent softness and utter decadence of the rich darkling locks. This brief scene, to my mind, is simply another hair gem in the crown, demonstrating why, in the pantheon of the hair of Middle Earth, there can only be ONE who possesses such decadence that it takes an actor of Richard Armitage's consummate strength and skill to OWN such opulence, and not let it dominate - but rather exquisitely and yet powerfully frame the fire and magnificence of the character.

And for myself, I assume I am one of the most afflicted of the "hair freaks" and have found it most enjoyable to peruse the hairs of Middle Earth, as opposed to whatever else I should have been doing (which, having gotten sidetracked, didn't get done... )
Thanks so much for posting those beautiful pony pictures. In a way I don't know why the film-makers go to the bother of obtaining such beautiful creatures, then give them so little screen time. Sigh - it's maddening, the ponies were SUCH a breath of fresh air, and I think a needed moment of reminding us of the good in Middle Earth as the journey darkens. Just another of those moments of "too tight" editing which if not rectified in the EE , I certainly will at least have a nice blog! Just a few more seconds of ponies!
