I have to say, I'm very excited. Even if the new text doesn't add much to what's available in in History of Middle-Earth and "Unfinished Tales," it will have beautiful new illustrations by Alan Lee. The cover art is now online, and Turin looks wonderful, just look at that dragon-helm. http://tolkiengateway.net/wiki/Image:The_Children_of_Hurin_cover.jpg

I'm very much excited as well, and I really like Lee's illustration which was released: http://tolkiengateway.net/...eparts_Menegroth.jpg I can't wait to see all the illustrations, it would be great if in a few years we could see another illustrated version by some other artists like Nasmith/Howe.

I'm not so fond of the Menegroth illustration.

Rather bland, to my tastes, and the bridge attaches oddly to the cliff.

Bland is usually the term that comes to mind when I see Lee's illustrations, except for maybe his sketches. The black/white-style of his sketches in his Sketchbook I really enjoyed as that is what I enjoy about Howe, the contrast between good and evil is so evident and vibrant as in the stories. Though I do think Lee manages to stay pretty canonical with his illustrations and his style also reminds me of how the Professor would illustrate the book, which I like. I hadn't thought about the bridge; I'll assume due to the primitive tools and rushed schedule, the bridge wasn't built to high standards.

as it reminds me of the high bridge/aqueduct the Fellowship passes on their way to the doors of Moria... which looks much like the entrance in Lee's illustration here. Maybe that high structure shown so well in the film could have led to such an entrance higher up from the entrance used by the Fellowship... Employees Only and all that :D A geeky moment for me :D

But except for it's fall I don't suppose there's a lot that can be told about it. The idea of this "hidden" city interests me very much. I'd also like to know more about Doriath, and Felagund's cave realm. That's it! (she says in her best Charlie Brown voice) --we need a book entitled "Elven Realms".

I've always been fascinated by the idea of Gondolin and the other hidden realms. I'd definitely buy a book about the Elven Realms.

in this new book. At least you won't if you've read all the published material. Christopher won't add anything to his father's work - lamentably - nor will he allow others to.

But it's nice to dream. And if there ever were to be any new info unearthed, I'd love to read it.
