much more in the know will give better details. But if I'm remembering correctly the 'pants game' actually has it's origin in Star Wars fandom. It just grew from there and eventually entered LOTR fandom.

Out of the darkness of my life, so much frustrated, I put before you the one great thing to love on earth: the Blessed Sacrament... There you will find romance, glory, honour, fidelity, and the true way of all your loves on earth, and more than that: Death: by the divine paradox, that which ends life, and demands the surrender of all, and yet by the taste (or foretaste) of which alone can what you seek in your earthly relationships (love, faithfulness, joy) be maintained, or take on that complexion of reality, of eternal endurance, which every man's heart desires. --J.R.R. Tolkien, Letter #43, to his son Michael

Please could someone also explain these to us newbies, as well as the history thereof? I for one don't want to put a foot in the wrong leg and cause offence - start pantsing Mount Doom or the Grey Havens, for instance, only to be told they are sacrosanct. I'm assuming that here the word "pants" is used to mean trousers, rather than what it means to us in England - that is, underwear? Though that meaning does tend to make the whole thing even funnier.

that makes the "pants" threads even funnier. It did start with Star Wars, maybe even on TheForce.net. They started using lines from the original three movies, substituting "pants" where appropriate ("I cannot teach him. The boy has no pants.", "These aren't the pants you're looking for", "Search your pants, you know it to be true.") Soon after FOTR was released, pants threads invaded TORN. Someone might have some of the original threads, but every time we start one up it's just as funny as the originals. Nothing is sacred, so if you have a funny pants line, feel free to post it. I think we've even done Silmarillion pants threads.

The Road goes ever on and on Down from the door where it began. Now far ahead the Road has gone, And I must follow, if I can, Pursuing it with eager feet, Until it joins some larger way Where many paths and errands meet. And whither then? I cannot say.

are in Goeth-Helm's The TORN Humor Files, which are linked in one of the sticky threads in the Welcome section of these boards. I think they're under Humour/The Big Guns. I also think it was Nomad who won with this line: "There are darker and fouler things than Orcs in the deep dark places of my pants."
Celebrimbor: "Pretty rings..." Dwarves: "Pretty rings..." Men: "Pretty rings..." Sauron: "Mine's better." "Ah, how ironic, the addictive qualities of Sauron’s master weapon led to its own destruction. Which just goes to show, kids - if you want two small and noble souls to succeed on a mission of dire importance... send an evil-minded b*****d with them too." - Gandalf's Diaries, final par, by Ufthak. You can pants if you want to But don’t leave your pants behind Replace the word pants then it will enhance A joke in the written line I say, it can go where you want it A place where we will always find Then we will laugh like we came right out of our pants Leave the real line far behind And we can pants. Pants-y. It can go where you want it Replace a noun or even verb And you can pants real neat put their pants at their feet And surprise 'em with a line supurb Say, if you don’t start a pants thread someone will, that you can bet And I think that I recall the TORnsibs owe it all To a website called the force-dot-net I say, you can pants, I can pants Movie lines or from the text We can pants, we can pants First Legolas then Gimli next I can pants, you can pants But only one thread if you please When it falls, off the board Then we all can start a repri-i-i-ise. Tolkien pants Is it safe to pants Is it safe to pants You can pants if you want to Just replace only one word So if we don’t abuse it, never gonna lose it Funniest thing you’ve ever heard. I say, You can pants if you want to But don’t leave your pants behind Replace the word pants then it will enhance A joke in the written line Is it safe to pants, oh is it safe to pants. Is it safe to pants!

only 1 word only could be changed to pants, so no possesive pronouns and the like to make the word fit better, at least that is the way I learned to play before coming to TORn. Perhaps the rules have changed.

No idea about the origin. As to whether Pants jokes are puns, however...

I seriously doubt whether the "Pants" class of verbal joking is punning as I understand the term, although it does require a high level of literacy and verbal craft to make a first-class Pants joke, because it is not the simple substitution of "pants" for a primary noun in a Tolkien quote that produces the humorous effect, rather it is the use of "pants" in an existing sentence where the change of noun suddenly rearranges the sense of the remaining sentence to apply to some aspect of wearing, owning, removing, or otherwise interacting with bifurcated garments in a way that brings out the fear most people have of pants, since wearing pants is our primary means of covering our nakedness, which when threatened arouses an array of protective reactions, one of which is laughter (often nervous or hysterically overstated -- remarkably few of the "Pants" jokes on this site actually rate a literal "LOL", or "Laugh Out Loud", but the LOL-poster is betraying his or her intrinsic fear of losing their own pants), and another of which is the desire to join in the fun by contributing yet another "Pants" joke, thus removing the fear by asserting group solidarity, and the resulting feelings of community, felt even over so amorphous and virtual medium as the Internet, is without doubt far better than the alternative of every one here getting together at a single location pantless, although there is something to be said for that idea too -- it remains true however, getting back to the point, that "Pants" jokes are not puns, unless Tolkien's word that is replaced is a near homonym for "Pants", and that is rarely seen or referenced during one of these affairs.

Can't you just say that juxtaposing "pants" with it's underlying naughty meaning with a heretofore dramatic line from a movie is silly? And then emphasize the silliness with smilies?

And then emphasize the silliness with smilies? "Death to all smilies!" Which I take to be a declaration of WAR , personally.
