The Star of Earendil

Just wanted to remind everybody that the Star of Earendil is particularly bright in the western skies these evenings. I've been noticing it in the twilight above the mountains. OK, it's really Venus, but that, I'm sure, is what the Star of Earendil "really" was. I've also been seeing Menelvagor with his shining belt. He's about to bid us goodbye for the year.

I have always had a fondness for stargazing but once I read the works of Tolkien it only magnified. He creates this mythos for the stars that just hits your soul, or at least my soul, in just the right place. Everytime there's a clear sky I look up at "Earendil" and feel that story come to life. Very powerful.

It has been impressive lately, hasn't it? I always think of that salutation when I see Venus these days. And Orion has pretty much solidly become Menelvagor for me, too. Interesting for someone with an astronomy degree.

And it does not mean that Elrond had a shiny bald pate... From the Sil appendices: "êl, elen 'star'. According to Elvish legend, ele was a primitive exclamation 'behold!' made by the Elves when they first saw the stars. From this origin derived the ancient words êl and elen, meaning 'star', and the adjectives elda and elena, meaning 'of the stars'." "rond meant a vaulted or arched roof, or a large hall or chamber so roofed; so Nargothrond (see ost), Hadhodrond, Aglarond. It could be applied to the heavens, hence the name Elrond 'star-dome'."

Orion is one of my very favourite constellations. I can remember one of my teachers in Scotland, when I was about five, pointing out to us Orion and his belt and sword, and I've loved spotting him in the sky ever since. As Winter is by far my favourite time of year, too, I'm always rather sad when he leaves our night sky. I'm learning more about star gazing at the moment - a friend has been teaching me and there are more constellations I can recognise now. I've never actually associated them with LotR before but I know I will now!

Yes, there's something almost magical about seeing it twinkling through the barren tree-branches on a clear winter's night! Beauty untouched by the pollution and madness of this world...*sigh*...

I used to read do literature and language enrichment in the schools and one of my units was about stars. I focused on the Big Dipper (for 1st graders) and had quite a few books elaborating on cultural folklore about the Big Dipper. I had a couple of Native American stories, a Finno-Ugric one, and "Follow the Drinking Gourd, about the Underground Railroad. Orion is so large and I can imagine this proud warrior standing in the sky. And I like how it marks the seasons. In some ways it's easier to star watch when it's dark at 6:00 in the evening!

I recently did a set of LOTR quote cards for a friend going through a health crises. I paired quotes from the book that made me laugh or sigh or just feel inspired with images onto little cards. I had also been sharing haiku with her as well and was struck by how certain traditional Japanese haiku made me think of LOTR passages. I decided that some cards would provide pairs of haiku/quotes. Here's one:
Here is the dark tree Denuded now of leafage . . . But a million stars Shiki Or there maybe ‘tis cloudless night and swaying beeches bear the Elven-stars as jewels white amid their branching hair. Sam LOTR, Book 6, Ch. 1 The Tower of Cirith Ungol

As we call it in the UK! Yes, that's another one that I was taught as a very small child and which I've enjoyed spotting ever since. My Dad just bought me a 'guide to the nightsky' for my birthday; it's a small tube which you align with date and time, and then look into it and it shows you a map of what's present in your sky at that time. So now I can learn much more!

That haiku and quotation pair is perfect! They go SO well together! And describe the beauty of a winter night perfectly. I so love winter and dark - a sparkling winter's night appeals to me MUCH more than a bright summer's day.

as their own star? I'm not talking about Star Registry stuff, just unofficial "that one's mine". My sister and I did that when we were teenagers. When I spent a summer in Europe, I would look up at the sky and see her star and it made me feel less homesick. My star isn't one of the brighter ones, just one that I thought was placed in an interesting way in its constellation. It's a summer star. I love Orion, as many people have said, but the summer constellations remind me of wonderful family camping trips when I was a kid and my mom taught me the constellations. Uncle Baggins has since claimed a star near to mine as his star. Anybody else have their own star?

it is wonderful but it has been cloudy for a few days. During the summer months up at the pond where everything is wide open to the SE we have seen it right beside the crescent moon and having it reflect in the still water is so beautiful. I must get a tripod to take night pictures because i cannot hold it steady long enough. Thank you Aunt Dora. I'll keep an eye out tomorrow night .

i really like because it has all the serenity of a Maxfield Parrish. And all the others are very fine but the one that hits me deeply is the forest, shaft of light scene by John Lampo. Simply exquisite.

...who thinks it has been twinkling? Planets aren't supposed to do that, and it's confusing.
Children’s Interpretations of the Bible Lot’s wife was a pillar of salt during the day, but a ball of fire during the night. The greatest miracle in the Bible is when Joshua told his son to stand still and he obeyed him. Christians have only one spouse. This is called monotony. http://mallika.vox.com/

twinkling is caused by the atmosphere messing with the light waves. The only difference between the light from a distant star and a nearby planet's reflected light is the planet's light would appear stronger (by proximity) and I guess it would take more atmospheric turbulence to mess with the light. (Did anyone else hear Chaucer's voice in A Knight's Tale when they read 'turbulence'? ... and that post just made me sound a whole lot smarter than I am or revealed me for a loquacious magpie. Don't tell me which, okay?)
