Middle-earth Enterprises Reveals New AI Project to Expand Tolkien’s Legacy
April 1st, 2025 by Calisuri
In an ambitious endeavor combining classic literature with modern technology, Middle-earth Enterprises today unveiled Bridging the Ages, an innovative initiative that employs a cutting-edge AI system—codenamed Silmadur—to compose new narratives and expand upon the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. Drawing on decades of fan curiosity and meticulously sourced Tolkien archives, Silmadur’s mission is to fill the long-surmised gaps in Middle-earth lore, while offering subtle, modernized readings of the original texts. To create Silmadur, a specialized team of Tolkien scholars, archivists—including staff from TheOneRing.net—and AI experts spent two years assembling a comprehensive digital library of source materials. The dataset encompasses The Hobbit, The Lord of the Rings, and The Silmarillion, as well as early drafts, marginalia, personal letters, lecture notes, and lesser-known writings. Previously unreleased texts, once locked away in private collections, were added alongside appendices, genealogical charts, and decades’ worth of fan analyses. By drawing on this extensive treasury, the developers aimed to ensure that Silmadur faithfully mirrors the depth and tone of Tolkien’s original vision when crafting new passages. Article continues at the link. Keep in mind today's date!

- Conan vs Huan: The Hellhound Bloody Dog Zombie-pocalypse Saga (not safe for kids or anyone afraid of rabies)
- Luthien Goes Shopping: The Dress Extravaganza of Nargothrond (a sweet tale of fashion and romance marred only by a sick, brutal ending)
- "Sam, go home!" (the many adventures of Sam on his way home after being fired by Frodo, including marrying Rosie-ukh, an orc-maiden with a serial killer past)
Fire up the AI and get it churning out prose!

Just what did the hobbits know about Moria, and when did they know it?
- Doesn't it seem odd that MERRY was the one who helped open the magic door--just how many times had Merry been in and out of Moria on nefarious Brandybuck errands of ill repute?
- Why did the Watcher in the Water attack FRODO--you don't really think it was after the Ring, do you, not when Frodo had a satchel of unpaid Moria underground casino debts. Isn't it suspicious that Tolkien never talked about gambling in Middle-earth? How else do you think rich hobbits earned their fortunes???
- Why did PIPPIN--again, a hobbit, if you're not paranoid yet, you should be!--why did Pippin drop a stone down the well? Wasn't he alerting the Moria crime bosses so he could sell out the others and buy safe passage for himself? Isn't that the most obvious motivation ever???
- Why did the Balrog fight Gandalf and leave the hobbits alone--more signs of a secret deal with the Enemy!!! And was Gandalf shouting "You shall not pass!" to the Balrog or to the hobbits--enquiring minds want to know!

The worst thing I could ever imagine: using AI text-assembly to generate fake Tolkien prose that 'reads' like Tolkien to most folks who have not delved deeply into the actual archival works. It's ten times worse than the fantastical changes wrought by the films and TV shows, because it pretends to be purely "textual" - that is, the Tolkien material that film and TV fans always refer to when defending the changes made by modern media adaptations. 'There's always the Tolkien books. We haven't changed them, and fans will always have them.' But not now. The texts themselves will become 'adaptations', and who will be able to tell the difference? Gah. Unless. Unless. Calm down. Breathe. It's April 1st, folks.
